  • How to replace the speedo lights in your BMW R1100RT. This job is also very similar on the R1150RT too. When these lights blow it can be a real pain riding at night and not being able to see the speedo. It only takes about 15-20 mins to complete, and is a real bonus afterwards because you can SEE the speedo again.

    Thanks for another informative video! I just ordered a Stebel Nautilus Compact Motorcycle Air Horn and wanted a way to get in at that area to mount and power it. Have you ever installed on of the auxiliary type horns to supplement the anemic horn on the RT?

    • @RestorationBiker
      @RestorationBiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Yes i fitted a matched pair of Fiam horns to one of my RT's They were LOUD. Very nice horn, and gave you the confidence to know that if you needed it the other driver wouldn't miss you. I asked my wife to "sound the horn". making out I was doing some investigation of the wiring system. She nearly went through the roof, so funny. It made the bike sound as if it was a truck coming through. I wired them via the original wiring I believe. Worked perfectly. There are a few ways you can wire them up. I believe 'Nippy Norman' here in the UK have a few good kits to wire extras in.

    You have inspired me to do my instrument bulbs this weekend! Thank you. What bulbs are they? If I can't get 1.7w, can I put in 2w? Also the bulbs come in two sizes - Are they the normal or minature please?

    • @RestorationBiker
      @RestorationBiker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, The official manual states they should be 1.7W. I wouldn't think that the 2W would be a problem, but can't say for definite. I am sure that these are the smaller ones. I was lucky as I have a spare speedo loom so I just used a bulb from there.. Glad you feel inspired to do it.

      Hi Damien, When you get to the motor, you need to check that there is power and an earth there. If there is it may be a seized linkage, or a naff motor. Yes we have done loads of WW1 and WW2 trips. We did the Somme in 2016, which was the hundred year anniversary. We had a flight in a Cessna over the lines, amazing what can still be seen. Had a trip to Arnham, and the Dams near Dusseldorf planned and paid for in 2020. But bloody Covid made that a no go. There is so much to see and visit there . Love the Normandy trips. Pegasus bridge etc.

      Hi, Many thanks for your post. Your problem, is a fault with the switch ,if fitted, or the supply to the relay, or fuse.. Find the fuse and trace the power from the fuse to the relay. If all is in order then you may have a faulty relay. If you do a few basic checks and then get back to me I will see if I can help point you in the right direction. Take care, and ride safe.

    My Tacho has stopped working. The Fuse 1 to the instrument cluster is fine. When I turn the ignition on the needle blips slightly. Any clue to a likely candidate? Bike runs normally so the motronic unit is probably fine.

    • @RestorationBiker
      @RestorationBiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      The tacho gets it's feed from fuse no 1 as you know. If this is fine which you say it is then check that there is voltage at the tacho. If there is then the tacho has an earth, and the other wire goes to the motoronic unit via the same terminal as the ignition coil. So, if fuse 1 works, and the bike runs fine it looks as if it is a wiring fault, in the tacho wiring. Or the tacho is toast itself. See if you can scrounge another tacho to test your one works. Hope this helps.

    • @RestorationBiker
      @RestorationBiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Thanks for the comment. In the UK it is a legal requirement to have a light that is used to show the vehicles 'position' If for example you are parked at night you are supposed (in certain places)to display 'position' lamps. We call them 'side lights' . There are a large number of rules about lights here This is just a slight skimming over the full rules. I bought a bike once that was made in the US. It did not have 'side lights' it didn't even have a light switch, the lights were on all the time the ignition was on. So, many people in other countries would not have 'side lights'. I should have mentioned it in the video. Thanks for the interest. Ride safe

      @@thurstonhowelliii9501 Yes, The funny thing is here no motorcyclist ever rides without the lights on. So, the system you have in the US makes sense. We quite often see people driving their cars here when it is nearly dark, with NO lights on. Ride safe.
