Very useful analysis and review. This is one of Canon's best lenses. It provides outstanding image quality, colours, sharpness, and dynamic range. It has IS, which is pretty useful. I use it and it is fantastic, both for Macro and portraits. Worth the money.

Sweet mother of heart attacks, I though Chris really did chuck a 100mm f/2.8L into a pot of boiling water. For a second I was thinking "Beat that, Kai! Pfff, Chris' test beats your silly durability tests!". Good fun though, with those Canon cups.
I love this lens soooo much. it was worth the money tbh.
Full frame is actually the more taxing format for lens testing. APS-C has the advantage of higher pixel density per lens real estate, but the true corner lens performance and dof come out on the full frame. Nice review and thanks for your work. This looks like a great lens.
But chromatic aberrations will show up more on apsc and due to that pixel density, full frame lenses are much softer on apsc

I am interested in finding out the differences in the canon 100mm f2.8 and the sigma 105mm f2.8 with with image stabilization.
I use this lens for macro photography and I can’t imagine anything better. Been using it for about a year or so.

I love Macro Photography...I've been doing a looooot of shots with the 28mm but there is just no use for that lens when you want to take pictures of insects as you can imagine. Flowers and anything that is not scared of my camera and lens looks great though. Really excited to see what I can get out of the 100mm L lens now. Cheers!

The major weakness of the EF 100mm f2.8 IS USM macro lens is the short focus throw. As many who use this lens, I almost never use autofocus, my switch stays in MF constantly. But (my speculation here) to achieve rapid AF, Canon reduced the turn radius of the manual focus ring so close subjects come in and out of focus much faster. This makes it more difficult for me to verify sharp focus of a close subject and I have to spend more time fidgeting with the focus ring. The older Canon macro which was neither IS nor USM required more turning of the manual focus ring, so verifying subjects were at the sharpest plane of focus was actually easier to see and as a result I could actually focus faster.

It would be great if you make a review of the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro (the non USM version). I have one of that and I am pretty happy with its image quality.

+Ian Hall 80D Just came out!
I just bought this lens after a long struggle with myself. I asked on Amazon about the build quality and it got praised by any commenter. Then I went to 2 different stores to look at it. The focus ring had about 1-1.5mm play on one, and that much in both possible axis on the other one. Just as crappy as the non-L 70-300 I used and hated much before I got enough cash to shell out. After several commenters swore theirs had no play at all and one dealer answered that play was important for means of precision (!), I decided to test my luck, and lucky I was. Still doesn't feel like a Sigma Art, but the focussing is smooth, fast and silent, and the old 70-300's stablilizer, that worked, but sounded like something in between a miniature concrete mixer and a coffe grinder (!), is forgotten. But still, be wary of the build quality! Seriously.
The copy I tested was fine :-)
First off all I love your reviews, they are great! Second I have a question: Will you make a review for the new Tamron 90mm macro f017? I think it's an interesting competitor to the Canon 100mm and you are the only one I trust with these tests because your tests are reproducible :)

This lens is still a magnificent pice in 2023, just picked up a like-new example off eBay at a good price and it produces amazing photos. One thing about this lens which is commonly found on internet forums is the auto focus. If you're used to Canon's super-fast auto focusing, this one will mess with you. In low light, the auto focus is very slow but it does nail focus every time, it's just not lightning fast. Outside or in bright light, the focusing is quite a bit faster. But, if you're used to any of the L lenses with the USM motor, this lens will mess with you because of the slow movement of the auto focus, but, apparently it's an inherent problem with Macro lenses with such a long focal length.

After about 6 veiws over the last 12 months, I'm finally getting this. for Portrait and Macro work. But its the Bokeh on this lens that gets me.. I think the 60mm EF-s Macro would be better for APS-C but I'm Full frame now. After following you for quite a while... I have sold all my EF-S gear but the 15-85mm which I just cant seem to part with.... It'll will joins my 70-200 F4 L IS USM, 16-35 F4L IS USM, the 50-and 85 1.8's, I even have a couple of older lenses you havent tested. 35-135mm , 28-90, and a 35-80, which has a cool trick of removing the front group, and using it as a Macro... I'd be quite to post them over to you play with for a while. But you would have to post em back to Aus..Though it seems you are moving away from these lenses a little.. Any way let me know.. Cheers. Thanks Chris this is my next Lens. For now I will be using it on a 60D but I am hoping Canon will soon release a Mark II 6D if they do I will get one and use the 100mm on that. You had me fooled when you dropped what appeared to be a $1000 Lens into boiling water. Then I saw the link to the cup review phew!.

I have a Canon 80d, and this canon 100mm lens will arrive tomorrow. My question is, will this Kenko DG Auto Extension Tube Set work well on a canon 80d?? Will I get much more magnification, and better results? I like your channel, keep up the good work!!

It's shot at f/4 on a full-frame camera and at various focal lengths. 1/50 shutter speed, and various ISO levels

I'm new to the world of macro, but it appears as though these lenses have better overall image quality across the image. Even into the corners! Better than the usual primes. or maybe I just haven't experienced enough of them.
If you get the opportunity I would kindly request a video on the RF version, some people even say that it’s not as sharp as the EF version.

Great Review, I love Macro Photography , I have a Canon 80D, I get quite reasonable Macro results using a Canon EF-S 55-250 Lens but now I want a dedicated Macro Lens. Would I get better quality and sharper results using this 100 L lens on my 80D crop sensor than I would using an EF-S 35mm or 60mm Lens ? 😊
Yes, you will, although the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro lens is about as sharp

What adjusting the fstop to increase your sharpness do you need to compensate in other settings?

I've had this lens for a few months. I'm interested in flower photography. But I'm not getting sharp imgs. My imgs are soft though I'm shooting at f8-f11. Am I getting something wrong?

Hey Chris, I'm finding a good portrait lens for my new 6D2, which this and thre 135L seems good. I have lens for other uses, so this choice is strictly for portrait work. Not people portraits though, it's toys and 1/3 dolls, so I can't go too far away. Which one seems better？Will the .8 difference in aperture be visible？
The bokeh will be much smoother with the 135mm lens (it's a tighter focal length which makes a big difference) but if you need macro pictures then you need the macro lens!
Hi Chris. I am about to buy a macro that can also occasionally serve as a portrait lens, therefor IS and AF are important. Recently I learned about Tamron 90mm, the latest SP model. Which one would you recommend? Do you plan to review the Tamron? As a camera I am using a canon 70d.

mahisha murti I haven't tried the Sigma but apparently it's very good. Apparently, the best macro lens in the world is the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS! I'd love to try that one day

Christopher Frost if I have a 24-105 f4 L lens is this lens something to look into? I love Macro but unless I use an extension tube I don't have anything to get the kind of ultra macro shots I like, like close-ups of insects. Thanks for any help you can give.

I have a question for ya. Could you safely dip the very tip of this lens through salt water to break the reflection if need be in a tidal pool to capture some close to the surface sea critter? if not what cheap choices are out there to enable that little bit of lee-way?
And also I am guessing your test lens did not survive the boiling lol.

I compare this to my Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 and at the same apertures, the 100mm always produces a darker image. Is this normal?

in the min 7:42 you mentioned that the lens without IS is sharper than the L series with IS; so if it is, we need to shoot photo or video only on tripod, right? also is this lens on canon 70d is sharper and more recommended than canon 50mm f1.4? thanks
mrz 1342 Both lenses are as sharp as each other. You'll need a tripod for macro photography most of the time whether your lens has IS or not. And whether you should get a 50mm or 100mm lens is up to you and your needs.
I still have the original Canon 100mm f2.8. It’s not the USM but the one before that. It seems to have bad chromatic aberration. Does anybody know if there is a comparison online between the original and the USM or this one?
