I bought this lens used a few years ago, it was my first macro lens. I really liked it, but extremely hard to get 1:1 hand held. Also I didn't have a really good tripod or slider which made taking my photo's with it a lot of work and difficult, that being said I think I got some really nice photo's even though I only have a APS-C. Last year I bought the Canon 100mm 2.8 with is and I like it because I can use it without my clunky tripod and have gotten some really nice photo's with it too.
Thank you, at the time I didn't have any flash which did make things more difficult. I was just starting out using a DSLR. so I am slowly adding a few lenses and for Christmas I received a 430 EX 11 speedlite. I should look into the ring flash.
msmartinigirl1 The original MR-14EX is a very good macro flash if you're just starting out, and now inexpensive. The 2nd version appears to be a small improvement, though I have never used it. Eventually you'll probably want to 'upgrade' (as did I); the MT-24EX twin flash is well worth considering, I use it with my 100mm L and MP-E65mm and it's never off those lenses when I'm out in the field (or at home macro stacking). It needs diffusers though, there's a chap on Ebay who makes excellent diffusers especially for it. The Extreme Macro website is an awesome source of macro information, here's the link- extreme-macro.co.uk/
Most macro lenses are very good, and it's always fun to test :) Have you tried the Tamron 180mm? It's amazing. It also has a ring outside and behind the mount for the lens hood which lets you rotate the filter you have on so you can rotate a polarizing filter if you have one on, pretty neat, but the image quality is amazing as well, even if it's getting old now.

I prefer a bit longer focal length for macro lenses at times, not just because of what you said about not getting as close to the subject, but also because of the shadow you sometimes cause by being close to the subject. Not ireally important but at 4:10 I think that is actually a three pence coin, not a sixpence. On the subject of older macro lenses and Sigma, at some point would you be able to review the original Sigma APO 180mm F3.5 EX DG macro lens? (not the newer f/2.8 one), Maybe compare it to this Canon lens since they both don't have stabilisation, are the same focal length, both macro lenses and start at f/3.5? I know a couple of people who used one years ago and said it produced quite good quality but have since moved to the newer Sigma 150mm macro or Canon 100mm L macro.
I don't think it's really all that sharp compared to a lot of the lenses you've featured recently at wide apertures, but man that contrast is amazing. I noticed it immediately at 2:51. That's something I didn't know I valued so much in lenses but I will watch out for it now. Also FWIW, you can get old 90s sigma models for dirt on ebay. Take a Nikon and adapt it to canon and it's now full manual. You're not missing out on the AF for macro anyway. I dunno about the sharpness but you save many hundreds of dollars.

+RonLX D The 5D iii is wonderful but unless you're shooting sports, I don't think there's any huge advantage over the 6D. The 6D is really fantastic, even nowadays - go for it
Terence Chan Weighs a ton though and a challenge to use with flash; I find myself leaving it at home most of the time and taking out the 100mm L and MP-E65 with the MT-24EX flash. Still, the Sigma 180mm is a damn sharp lens and has produced some fantastic images for me.
minepate Here in the UK used Sigma 180mm's recently have been going for around £500 on Ebay and cost a grand new (they depreciate in value by around a half as soon as you buy it!). Used Canon 180mm 's are a couple of hundred more but hold their value. I'd get a second hand Sigma (not a new one, they're overpriced new in my opinion, as is the Canon 180mm) as they're a steal at that price. If it's just a portable general macro walk-around lens you're after, then I'd recommend getting the excellent Canon 100mm f/2.8 L is (and Canons macro flashes will work with it too, the Sigma 180's filter thread is too large).

I also have this old lens and value its use for macro,,, although mine is not the L , Sigma 180 mm USM IF APO MACRO 1; 3.5 . Would have been nice if it had stabilization, but I do ok with hand held shots and occasionally put it on tripod for important shots. Taking shots of flowers and insects its not needed to be super close for sharp images., and as you mentioned for more distant shots nothing to bragg about. Also in my camera bag of macro is a canon ef-s 60mm f 2.8 USM
You will always get a slight drop in sharpness whenever using an ef (or any other full frame lens for that matter) lens on an apc camera body. It's just the nature of how camera sensors work
+Denis Guerra /Most/ lenses are a little less sharp on APS-C, depending on the sensor resolution you're comparing. But there are some which are so sharp that even being fitted to an APS-C camera is no problem

i just bought a really cheap version 1 (not sharp at all and flaring is horrible, but i get 12mm on full frame and it didnt hurt my pocket at all :)

The AF shouldnt be affected by a lenses aperture. What camera are you using?

This lens is outdated. Canon has been slow to update their lens catalog for modern high resolution cameras...
