    I have done some experimentation and have found that setting the focus to manual and then adjusting the SA control, you can refocus on you main point of interest manually and then the foreground and background will be affected but the main part of the subject in the focal plain will be sharper. You can even enhance the sharpness using Topaz Phot AI.

    That softness is more like out of focus. I don’t think anyone would take a picture like that. Not sure how useful that feature would be for portrait photography. Thanks for showing first-hand how it works.

    I started using macro lenses for head shots with great success. I started with the Nikon 105 mm F2.8 macro and when I switched over to Sony I grab the 90 mm macro S2.8 as one of my first lenses to buy. They work great for school pictures that I do for the younger kids. Great for wedding detailed shots. But I learned as with any macro lens for portraits if they don’t have really good skin it’s gonna show every imperfection and make more work for you. I heard great things about this Canon macro lens. It’s cool how canon is thinking outside of the box with the SA control. Anymore you can’t go wrong with the new macro lenses that are coming out. Great video love seeing you collaborating with Ike

    I managed to buy this lens almost as soon as it was made available; when I bought my R5, I simply had to have it. If there’s anyone out there who has taken more images with it than I, it would be shocking to me. Having said that, the SA function on my lens has been set to “neutral” from day-one. No interest at all in this feature.

    • @rolandrickphotography

      That SA control is the most useless gimmick ever. It’s totally clear what they tried, copying the Defocus Control from epic Nikon lenses such as the AF DC-Nikkor 105 mm 1:2D. In that Nikkor lenses having it, it works perfectly. But in that RF 100 macro it’s a total failure. Dealbreaker. - I’d preferred they never added it but made the lens $ 400 cheaper, I would have purchased it immediately because of the x 1.4 magnification and the ultra fast AF. But I don’t pay a few hundreds extra for something I know for sure I never gonna use. I wished Canon had a version without that crappy SA and for that about 400 bucks less expensive.

    Purchased this lens today, saw Sal Cincotta's video with this lens and was very impressed. I'll use it for portrait, macro (nature), pet photography, objects etc. I purchased this lens because it's sharp & versatile and with the SA control it blurs the subject too much, so I doubt I'll be using it.

    I'm genuinely confused as to what Canon thinks people will use the SA control for. It does change the background bokeh shape, but it also completely loses all detail in the subject. I can't really see a single application where that would be beneficial or even remotely acceptable. I have this lens and got it for product work, but I can't imagine a scenario where a completely soft focus on the subject would be desirable, regardless of what is happening in the background.

    Excellent video. Thanks very much! To confirm, if we want the subject to be in sharp focus, we should leave the SA control centered (zero’d), correct? This reminds me of an old EF 135 f2.8 Soft Focus lens I used to have. It was a neat feature at first, but then I hated it and never used it. The problem I think I’d have with the RF 100mm macro is I think the SA seems a bit gimmicky and not sure I’d use it, and don’t like paying for a feature I don’t want. I am curious so the SA control throws off primary focus? Can you try refocusing and does it get sharper or is it just global softness so refocusing would have no impact on the foreground. To me seems the SA would have very limited use if it just makes everything softer like that.

    SA doesn’t flatter the otherwise very attractive model in this case , but that is only one use case. I could imagine other macro subjects & environment where it could possibly be useful but not for portraiture generally & only when the effect is purposely sort after .Nice video !

    • @Seitenwerk
      @Seitenwerk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am pretty sure the intention was never to use it for regular photos. It will actually only decrease image quality for portraits etc. I am pretty confident that the use case is for macro shots where you can change reflections, bokeh etc to fit your needs.

    I'm chomping at the bit to use this lens. Santa put it in her bag, and I can't touch it for another month! The EF 100 macro has been my most used lens. Can't wait to experience 1.4x, but wonder if it comes with a large loss of light. On the other hand, the new lens might give a longer working distance at 1.0x which would allow more options to light the subject. The new lens hood appears to be shorter, maybe that's to provide a shorter working distance for 1.4x. Hoping SA will give a new variety of looks to raindrops and speculars...maybe exposure blend a sharp subject onto an SA adjusted background...not too different from focus stacking, which is common in macro work. Maybe combine SA with small aperture to get starbursts of holiday lights, and add a fog machine for some godlight. I bet the SA softness effect is less pronounced at smaller macro work apertures where maybe the effect is stronger at the edges of the frame, and less at the center. Oooo I wish I never saw your video, because I'm going to be thinking all night about how to use this lens. Thanks Vanessa!

    I know your not a spots shooter but I’ve been stuck between the rf 100’m 2.8 and the 135 1.8, of course I’m still shooting portraits etc. I want the 100 because of the price but the 135 because it’s just a beautiful lens plus the 1.8…😭I’m sooooo stuck!!

    Just picket up this lens for my EOS R5 now that it is being discounted by $200. Will see how it compares to the Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2 VR S and the Sony 90mm f/2.8 G. I think it’s the fastest AF of the bunch which is nice if you plan to do portraits with it. Will see how MF is compared to the Sony with its MF clutch. Thank you for the video.

    When you think Macro? you think Objects and Flowers insects etc? Thats where the SA comes in handy, I would not use it for portraits, and even if have to be at a slower aperture and maybe flash strobes, I own this lens and its pretty good specially for video... sharpness so dope

    Yes, I have this lens, it is fantastic for portraits. I tried the SA control ring shooting some rose bushes and was disappointed at the primary focus blur, it’s too strong to pass for soft focus, it just looks out of focus. I’m going to keep trying the SA on a variety of subjects, but so far no dice. But as a portrait lens and a macro lens this lens blows my mind, it’s now my primary lens (I have the 28-70, magic but very heavy).

      I have this lens too, using this lens I haven't found useful for the SA control ring. I wonder if we take background bokeh and take photo of the person when set SA control ring to neutral and combine two images would that make it better for the effect (I'm yet to know how to combine photo in editing software yet)

    • @emilycross4527
      @emilycross4527 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kenhuang3820 yes, this would work. especially with the new software algorithms, I think the automatic features in the software could do a good job combining the images. probably would use a tripod for the best quality composite.

  • @taichpaul

    Mine now has electrical tape to stop the ring from being moved, wish it had a lock on it, it moves far too easily as I found out to my cost. Other than that difficult to fault this lens.
    EDIT: I have just discovered thanks to Justin Abbott th-cam.com/video/RqEsTbMelek/w-d-xo.html that there is a lock switch for the SA ring, YES! Hidden on the wrong side but hey you only need to switch it once.

    • @Seitenwerk
      @Seitenwerk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hidden? Wasn't it obviously placed on the outside of the lens and of course described in the manual etc ^^ I wonder how that can be missed. Especially when you usually look at the lens at least once in detail.

    I ordered and paid for this this lens (Canon RF 100mm Macro Lens) almost a year ago now and understand that I had to wait 6-months to get this lens but I still don't have the "Tripod Mount Ring and Adapter" yet and Canon has refused to comment to B&H for an update. I believe that to be unacceptable customer service and therefore can't recommend "Canon equipment" to anyone.

    The SA control looks to be too soft for my tastes for portraits, but for someone who does artsy fartsy type portraits it might be perfect. I remember back in the 80's I would stretch nylon stockings/panty hose over the lens, or even take a clear filter and smear some vaseline on it. This lens is definitely interesting otherwise and thanks for sharing the video with us.

    Guys, stop and experiment with the product.
    Today i brought it home and for the first time i played with it.
    So the SA CONTROL not only affects the bokeh shape and the focus on subject but also slightly zooms in and out.
    It is better observed with the increase of the distance between camera and subject.

  • @benjaminmesa1089
    @benjaminmesa1089 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, I knew the SA control thing was a gimmick and not worth it at all way back when people first started talking about it. Wasn't excited at all. This further confirms it. More importantly, have you noticed any focus shift issues with this lens at higher apertures?

    I have seen so many bad examples on SA control function demonstration. This is essentially the same function Nikon DC lens. The minus adjustments are for background and plus adjustments are for foreground. All Vanessa portraits in this video have no foreground of course the plus adjustments did nothing but blurred main subject in focus, as well as making background more caustic.

    Love the video Vanessa - whilst I get the macro lens vibe why on earth would you need a dial that fundamentally ruins a shot. Everything we're taught about how we see images is just waisted. My eye focussed (or not) upon a soft image and doesnt even consider the changing shape of the bokeh ? If it changed the shape of the bokeh whilst maintaining subject sharpness - then that's cool otherwise total waste of time !!
