The one good thing Soul Man had was that the blackface reveal was so sudden it actually made me laugh, even though it was only because it was a case of crossing the line twice. Loqueesha's reveal was literally making my brain implode from the cringe.
Also, the woman they picked to act as Loqueesha is honestly so precious and probably the only good actress in the entire movie... which says A LOT.

My first time watching Soul Man, I was shocked by the reveal, but I NEEDED to see how my friends reacted... which was better than how we all reacted to Loqueesha. So much cringe and embarrassment. And that poor actress, I legitimately feel bad for her...

@@mattammarofficial Just watched the movie. The dialogue is forced and the opposite of subtle, the relationships between characters aren't very believable and the movie takes too long to get going, could've cut a good 20+ minutes out of the run time and had the same movie, if not better. All conversations with the wife/son were extremely cringey and forced.
That being said, there were a few minor parts where I chuckled, like the long hair guy being a superfan of Loqueesha and acting like a teenage girl seeing one direction or something, the main dude asking his wife if her sex change was successful (reminded me of Billy Madison, "oh Eric is pregnant!") the lady who came in to act as Loqueesha thinking it was a porno got a few laughs, her failing miserably when she tried to take his job and just abusing people was worth a chuckle.
Overall, quite a mediocre movie, not much comedy or drama and nothing really of note. It made some good political points about racism and sexism, like how it's wrong to only hire for diversity (and that is discriminatory, in and of itself).
I can't say it's the worst movie I've ever seen. I can't even say it's the worst attempt at comedy I've ever seen (see: Masters of Disguise or Meet the Spartans), but it's definitely a forgettable movie that wasn't really worth the time watching. There aren't even any parts that are worth a meme because they're so bad (see: The Room or any of Neil Breen's movies).
      2.5/10 wouldn't recommend.

I remember when I was doing research on this film when I was working on a video about it, I recalled there being something fishy about the amount of 5 star reviews on its amazon prime listing.
If you go look, its very obvious that Jeremy Saville loaded the movie with fake 5 star reviews trying to blast the critics for being too harsh. A good amount of them only ever reviewed Loqueesha ever on Amazon, one of them reviewed his first film when it came out, along with like 2 random product reviews until it made its own Loqueesha review blasting critics. There was also one that was promoting a book written by Dwayne Perkins, who played Jeremy's accomplice in the movie.
A very weird attempt to salvage a movie that was dead on arrival, after being very disingenuous to the public already and pissing off Marlon Wayans.

The whole concept of white-washing characters is a huge problem with the movie industry, but when movies actually depict white people impersonating people of color be it physically with black face or utilizing stereotypical mannerisms and voice it’s racist and creates more harm than good.
It’s interesting you brought up White Chicks as a counter argument being similar in terms of being racist, sexist, and unfunny as most people see that movie as a cult classic and funny. I absolutely would love to see you review it and analyze it, because the movie is supposed to be a indirect satirization and commentary of white privileged women, and along the way the Wayans brothers better appreciating women be it their wife or woman they are trying to date.
Granted the humor is hit or miss, but I think you could definitely get a lot of material from the movie as the act of “white face” used in the film is more for comedy rather than satire with Loqueesha, which makes it similar to Soulman, but at least the message in White Chicks the Wayans Brothers was trying to tell was that men should better appreciate the little things the women in their lives do. But I absolutely understand why someone might not like White Chicks

As someone whose dealt with depression for a good portion of his life, that part where he was talking to the girl who was wanting to die...... made me ill. I don't think a movie clip had ever upset me so much. This movie kind of reminds me of Neil Breen's movies. Where Neil writes himself as this messiah, untouchable being who can do no wrong. Joe's never in the wrong in this movie 🙄🤮. The fact he gets a happy ending made me sick.
What's more upsetting is that there could have been an ok story here, hear me out. Take out all the stupid racist and sexist stuff (and while we're at it Jeremy also) and have it simply be about a guy trying to start a podcast or talk show and in order to do it he becomes more abrasive and upfront but in turn, it starts effecting his life since he's basically putting on an act for entertainment. What started out as a simple talk show is now turning into something horrible and negative.
Stuff like this happen in real life and itd be an interesting journey for a character to go through......
Oh wait, if the main character is put into a negative light and goes through "*cough*" hardships, then how can the other characters suck their dick and praise them like super jesus 🙄
Because we all know, every great story centers around characters who do no wrong and are seen as great despite being horrible people
Atleast Soul Man tried to have a moral at the end....

Note: Neil Breen is terrible but his movies are worth watching to laugh at and meme, this movie wasn't even worth that. There was nothing racist or sexist either, except that they only wanted to hire minorities (i.e. discriminating against race in the workplace), and that was only used as a dramatic device, nobody really agreed with it in the movie anyway.

You're a far braver man than I for putting yourself through this. What an awful movie. It's easy and accurate to sum up the whole thing with words like "racist" and "LGBT-phobic" but I think one word that really captures the movie's essence is "insecure." The be yourself message falls flat not only because of the poor writing, but also because Seville has revealed too much of himself with it. He's a small man whose sense of self feels threatened by successful minorities, especially Black people, and he has so little security in his identity that the mere suggestion of him being gay or trans terrifies him. He desperately wants to seem brilliant compared to us plebs, but he lacks actual skill to prove it, so he made this flick to have a cast of characters praise him. I don't know what his intention was with making this movie, but the result is that he outed himself as insecure and lacking talent.

I could see the show being a hit if the audio made it to TH-cam and Loqueesha became a meme and in turn sparking an interest in traditional talk radio again. Local TV clips have become memes before. But the movie isn't creative enough to do that.
Joe wants to benefit from pretending to be a black woman without the day-to-day racism and sexism. The white guy on the phone would have hurled the N-word at him and hung up if this was realistic. At no point does he have to see the racism and misogyny that black women get. "You are a better black woman than me", seriously? He has never experienced the bad stuff that happen to black women all the time.
The radio station could have also sued him for fraud because he took their money and had to sign legal documents to do this show. Fraud is a crime.

Wondering if some other assbackward twist of GEEEEEEENYUS was attempted by this glorious moron that was shut down by those guys once they found out about it - or at least by the same lawyer who maybe thought saying iPhone would be a bad idea. • @jazzabighits4473
    @jazzabighits4473 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Just watched the movie.

Honestly, I can see something like this working. With all of the tales of affirmative action going pretty far recently, I'd think a story about a straight(?) white male using the appearance/voice/etc of a non-white person for a job could be interesting. Especially if it tackles the issues that comes with it with a clear understanding and tack for both, or more, sides. The attempts of being funny via trans 'jokes' and 'Are you gay?' comments, the pretentiousness writing, and the overall ego and attitude that can come up when writing a story with you as the main character really ruins this movie just as much as the bigotry. At least Soul Man was just a typical "X disguised as Y for profit. Hijinks ensues" comedy movie, but obviously pushed it in the wrong direction.

    • @mattammarofficial
