- It's possible to setup a VPS with remote desktop access from your windows PC. We can do this even using a free VPS, which will demonstrate here in our video tutorial using Oracle's free tier VPS. First we setup a VPS running ubuntu, install gnome desktop and Xrdp for remote desktop. Then we can connect our home windows PC to our server and use the remote desktop!

Brilliant, Thank you! The default Ubuntu package is now 22.04... It won't work! So I created a new instance using 20.04 and it now works like a charm! Perhaps you could create a tutorial that works with 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish... I would also like to run Wine... I can't find a tutorial that pulls all of that together on Oracle Cloud free level.

is your interface rendering very slow? I chose the same computer specs (Standard A1 Flex, Ubuntu, 4 OCPU, 24GB RAM). Tried both Gnome and Mate, both are quite laggy.

Can't we output the audio from VM? I have followed this and created a VM. Then played a video on TH-cam using Firefox. I was unable to hear the sound. Any suggestions?

I really like more to use a very lightweight DE in servers when needed.
In case someone is interested:
Create a VM instance like he said;
Connect via putty;
Update and upgrade;
LXDE:
sudo apt install lxde-core xrdp
echo lxsession > ~/.xsession
XFCE
sudo apt install xfce4 xrdp
echo xfce4-session > ~/.xsession
Then set a password for ubuntu user.
sudo passwd ubuntu
Set the iptables config as shown in the video and connect via any rdp software.
User: ubuntu
Password: as you created.

I did everything as you said, I can see hte xrdp login screen but after I fill the user and password the remote desktop software just quits!

Great tutorial, but if you're allowing port 3389 through from everywhere, why do you need to port forward through an SSH tunnel?
I wanted to use the tunnel for the extra security & the tunnel doesn’t seem to work without the 3389 ingress rule- which is strange 🤔 . It’s possible to connect without the tunnel too, but may people prefer it.
Can I have 1 openvpn instance and 1 ubuntu instance running with same configuration in this video and openvpn video at the same time?

yes its pretty laggy, I think I am very far from my server location, maybe if I was in the same country it would be a little better - also it's more secure to use the tunnel so I wanted to share this method
Why did you have to forward the xrdp port in the cloud when you're tunneling through the ssh connection ?

What do I do if I get: "ubuntu iptables: Index of insertion too big." when I'm trying to add port 3389 to the iptables using "sudo iptables -I INPUT 6 -m state --state NEW -p tcp --dport 3389 -j ACCEPT"?

Can you please explain to me the utility of using the tunnel ? I've a windows machine on the OCI and i can connect to it directly using RDP client. Is it something to do with linux or with cloud ??

Because by default the oracle server needs an SSH key to connect, it won't accept a user/password login - so this gets around that issue., and also gives the benefit of encrypting the path between your PC and the remote. However, If you like you could get around that step by enabling password login on your remote server, then you wouldn't need the tunnel. Thanks for the good question!

@@IdeaSpot Ok, but in this case opening port 3389 on the firewall is useless, isn't it ? you need just port 22 as you use the tunnel. It would be useful if direct connection would have worked. Even more, local firewall is disabled by default and oracle cloud page fw is the actual fw ( you can test with ufw status - it should be disabled ). I remember I manage to connect only with tunnel without opening 3389, can you test this scenario ? Thanks
Also, you can set a passwd for ubuntu user and use it in the rdp. Is not mandatory to create a new user.

I mean If we have installed HestiaCP on a server, can we access Remote Linux Desktop from Windows?
Earlier in the setup you saved the private key as “arm demo private” but when setting it up in putty you selected “oracle” as the private key. Was this just an editing/continuity fault or is there an additional step here? Cheers.

Very good Tutorial. Unfortunately i only had a black screen with The Remote Session and after several Hours of Forum search (xrdp bugfixes Like two user Login or unset Dbus; alternatively switching to x2go or other vnc clients) The Solution for ne was to install The xfce Desktop and removing The ubuntu-Desktop. Then I was able to use the VM graphically :)

I think so - but windows isn't in the free tier so I didn't wanna try it 😅

@@jona.6855 oh that is very tricky! I don't think it's possible on this oracle vps, but if you can find a VPS with virtualization enabled then you can try it - check with
cho $(egrep '^flags.*(vmx|svm)' /proc/cpuinfo | wc -l)
If you get a result greater than zero it can be possible

Yes that should be fine! Though maybe keep the WordPress on a separate VM for best performance

To change GUI settings is required authentification. But user Ubuntu haven't a password. I can't set it with passwd without typing old password...

Oh I don’t think there is any way to recover from that - you’ll probably need to terminate the server and make another one

Well, I finally got an Arm Ubuntu desktop working...but for some damn reason, it will not open a terminal. Then I tried an AMD instance..and the desktop fails to start at all, only gives me a terminal window. Guess I might as well do Windows..

I want to install wine-hq inside this ubuntu and somehow am not able to do that. I tried it through direct command line in putty which failed and then tried installing a snapstore and tried installing it from the remote ubuntu front end. But it says i dont have permission to install or remove apps. Is there a problem with my user privileges ? Currently as a see there is 2 users logged into system.
may not be fully ARM compatible, let me know if you figure it out though, that would be pretty cool

Id suggest creating the instance again with 20.04. Ubuntu 22 is still very new and a lot of software won’t be fully working yet

Hi! I tried this but i now got stuck with this message. Message(400, LimitExceeded, false) You cannot create a volume because you have reached your limit. Upgrade to a paid account. (opc-request-id: dummyRequestId). Is there a way do delete all and start over?
You just need to search for volume and delete your unused volumes
