Since Kerala had mostly hilly terrain, they can't grow paddy. So, most of their rice comes from Tamil Nadu. Even vegetables. The rice you are tasting is a bit stouter variety (not a popular one, yet that is what you get here for the local keralites) They compensate it with fishcurry, exotic fruits grown here (Veliyath Garden, Homegrown nursery etc).
Kerala can't grow paddy?? You obviously haven't seen Palakkad, Kuttanad or other places where rice paddy fields are part of the landscape. Kerala used to be known as a major producer of rice, coconuts and spices. In the last 30 years rice farming has taken a major hit in Kerala as the new generation of farmers have turned to other professions and many fields which used to grow paddy for centuries have been turned into residential areas. Kerala imports rice from other states only because farming is becoming less and less popular as a profession. And by the way, hilly terrain is only in the east of Kerala where the Western Ghats forms the boundary between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The terrain in Kerala is divided into three distinct regions, the coastal region, the fertile plains beyond the coast and the hills of the Western Ghats.
