There is a decline in Whitebait on the coast, but not in all rivers The rivers where dairying and coal/gold mining are near by are by and large stuffed such as The Orowaiti, and Ngakawai.Buller catches are nothing like they were 30 years ago, but one can still get a good feed. Great to see you did so well. I'm off tomorrow am to have a go, but later this season will see me and 3 other guys in Southwestland having a serious go.
G'day Neville, the Ngakawau has actually come back quite well with better water treatment practices from the local coal mines and by and large the local dairying industry has got onboard with better fencing off of rivers and keeping stock out of the waterways. The biggest danger to the bait now is the total lack of any catch limit and the massively increased number of campervanners & the like adopting "All day set" whitebaiting - Big nets, multiple traps, put in at 5am (or 6am depending on daylight savings) and not lifted til end of day. Lined up 1 after the other along entire lower river reaches. You want to help the bait, ban the multi trap nets and legislate for campervans/caravans to be parked a minimum of 20 metres from the riverbank. That at least would force people to be on the bank with their net rather than hiding away in their campers all day. Might give the bait a chance when its pissing down with rain.
Nice work on the deer, and that frog pic is awesome mate :)
