The old construction laws say that when it rains your suppose to go to the bar! Lol. Love your videos man and keep up the great work! Some of the best I've seen.
Excellent information, well described. A stair tread 16" wide is very comfortable, my favorite. *_Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with the rest of us hacks out here._*
I like this idea, especially for elderly people who need low rise steps with wide treads. I think I might reconsider the steps I was about to build for my mother-in-law's place.
Keep up the great work, it helps me a lot, i learned many things from your channel. Happy new year to you, your family, and your Crew. Greetings from Europe.
Am ready to make boxes for stairs ( 7 f. long x 3 board composite 17 in.) Can I cut back on lumber by only using 10 inch blocking on where the treads will be, and 20 inch everywhere else ? Trex says to use close blocking for support. I will be making 4 boxes as you can see this would save a lot on cost.
What is your take on box stairs with a mitered picture-frame for each tread (as per usual) but with the in-fill boards running perpendicular to the risers? Weird to explain what I'm trying to accomplish.....but I have a whole bunch of short off-cuts from my main decking composite boards and I have a few long pieces from the decking picture-frame (different color) left over. In order to not waste the little off-cuts and not have to buy more boards, I'm imagining box style stairs for the three steps I need. I would then picture-frame each step like is normally done with mitered corners, etc. But for the in-fill, I don't have any long pieces of main decking color left, just the offcuts, like I mentioned. So I want to just use the off-cuts running perpendicular to the steps.....ie as if the main decking continued out past the deck picture frame and spilled out onto each step. Not sure if that makes sense. I tried googling that look but cannot find anything similar. I'd appreciate any input. Thank you!
Love these stairs, perfect for what i want to do. 6 1/2” risers with a long tread feels like your floating up them. At ground level would you put sleepers in or just a compacted base?
I want to make single box stair, but instead of going out from the deck, going into the deck, to keep the steps off a paver walkway, and under a roof!!! How do you do the deck framing for that?
Doc, how would you do the handrails for these steps? Would you do a gradual slope, or make straight horizontal rails that step down with each platform?
Hey DR do you mind revealing the brand of those jackets you guys wear? Looks like awesome solution for sunny PNW weather. I assume it is water proof. Us craftsman in other parts of the country could benefit from it as well. Thanks in advance.
Call me crazy but isn't "wide" the measurement from left to right and what you are calling "wide" should actually be refereed to as "depth" or "length" or "run" ? Am I wrong? BTW I think this the very best way to build these steps. Simple and solid. Good work!!
Love watching your videos but man the rain you get out there is crazy, I almost don't see the point of having a deck out there unless you want to sit in the rain. Stay dry!
Love your videos, but honestly I don't know how you can stand living and working in a place where you have to work in the rain all the time......I'd probably hang myself.
I left Seattle because of its communist like government… and this video reminds me of another reason … RAIN….! I do appreciate your video of box framed stairs and decks though…! I just put in a hot tub and wILL build this type of steps to gain access to enter the tub…I am sure it will be much safer than plain stairs…! ❤️🇺🇸😇
Been framing for 30 plus yrs. so I knew within a few minutes you weren't a hands on guy but was hoping you were somewhat appreciative of your help so I was 1 out of 2 and that's sad.
The very project I was looking for. Makes it very simple. Thank you.
I'm SO impressed with your videos! Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge👍👍 And yes, I'm a subscriber 👊👊

nicely done. good advice and instruction. and i love the PNW!!! miss it every day!
Thank you for your video! This really helped me decide how to best build my stairs on my large deck!

What size lumber and how do you figure out how many levels how far apart is each joist
Looks like you're producing a quality product... Nice work!

How do you connect each set of box frames together?

i like your idea, easy to build....thanks
Those are awesome I was going to go a different way but after watching you guys IAM doing it your way for dam sure thank you so much for the video
Thank you, they look great!

Thanks guy.
Like the idea gives me different options.
Omg I wished you were in Kansas because my stairs are killing me with the height and my back issues

Are you going to answer the question or did you answer it somewhere else cuz I was wondering
I need box steps repaired you should have gone through the rest of how you put everything together
T-town born and raised!
Are all the rises equal? Top deck rise looks less than the others.
Is it okay to use the box method for 4 stairs ?/
Are the boards 2x6’s?

Looks like TRUWERK
@@ericweber8858 Thanks! Will look into it. 👍
Expensive, but well made. I have a bunch of their pants

What about frost heaving with bpxed stairs?
I'm from the UK and I don't work in the rain. I only work 4 days a year.

This is the only way deck stairs should be built
Box style? I’m doing a very small deck and need to make a wider stair and this is catching my eye… Maybe half of a hexagon would be cool
What about pitch ?
How many steps can you go up with this method?
No more than 3
2x6 or 2x8
This question is so real!
noone ever shows HOW you screwed them together...im not a carpenter... what like8 inch screws or angle??

Obviously he knows what he's doing but to me it's a poor video of actually explaining how to get your measurements
You can make your own measurements. This just gives you the idea for the design.
It’s basic math
