Thank you, Bob! I agree with you 100%. Shaq only won Championships with Top 3 shooting guards. Tbh, the Mavs handed the Heat the ring in 2006.
Bob Ryan ain't lying
Why is Shaqs rebounding weakness held against him, but Russell's offensive weakness not held against him?
Eight in a row, baby. Eleven in total.
@@MrPgrawe so?
It is simple. Russell did not have an offensive weakness he played with so many other good hall of fame players he did not have to score. He could have scored 30 a night if he wanted.
@@isiahwashington2999 this
OKAYYYY..But the thing is, Shaq job wasn't really to concentrate on rebounds. Scoring , Defense of presence and his passing was underated.. But the Dream swept him...Soooooo
How About Moses malone??????????? Don't forget how dominant he was for 5-7 years in a row and continued to be a force.
I'd definitely rate him above Shaq.
I agree with Bob Ryan
Love Shaq but so many holes in his game. Shaq said Hakeem was better too. Hate to say it but Jokic is better than Shaq. So he was a great player and probably he is right somewhere in the 15 to 20 range. But hell that is a hell of a player.
I wouldn't put Jokic over Shaq. Yet.
Put down that crack pipe.
I say Wilt, Kareem and Russell are clearly better than Shack...and maybe more
You can't drown in your philosophy and knowledge; it can affect your perspective and judgment of players.
at least the folks arent forgetting Wilt. That is insane mistake by many folks
Wilt couldn't win in the Playoffs. He got dominated by Bill every time.
@@citi360 Like the time Wilt got 55 rebounds against Bill?
@@citi360 one on one wilt always dominated bill, but bill had better teams usually.
I prefer Wilt and Hakeem. But this take is ridiclious. Shaq in his prime was unstoppable. While he didnt give his all on defense and rebounding, he totally dominated everybody on the other side.
Shaq was only unstoppable because of the massive size advantage he had. He was well over 100+ lbs heavier than all the other centers, so he was weight bullying all of em. He didn't have skillful post moves like Hakeem or a consistent mid range jump shot just relied solely on being bigger than everybody else.
Olajuwon averaged 11.1 boards a game. Shaq 10.9 What is he talking about?
Hakeem 250 lbs. Shaq 320-370.
He's talking about the fact the Hakeem was 2x leading rebounder in the league vs Shaq's zero. Also the fact that Hakeem was 9x all defensive team vs Shaq's just 3 + 2x defensive player of the year vs Shaq's zero. Hakeem was also 3x block leader vs Shaq's zero.
@@EKTELESTESthat means nothing
@@melvynsngltn27yes it does as a big man that is your job while Olajuwon was way lighter and lead the league in rebounding twice against better centers
@hassanbaig5238 better centers where? I guess your unaware how mediocre the center position was in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Also every players job on a team is different
Hakeem is my favorite Center of all time. His footwork was second-to-none, and his amount of blocks was crazy! He should've been arrested for what he did to Prime/MVP Robinson...
Agreed, IMO Hakeem was better than Russell. Hakeem was dominant on both ends of the court unlike Russell.
I live Hakeem but David Robinson was every bit the player as Hakeem except for one playoff run. Do you know what their regular season wins to loss for Robinson to Hakeem? 32 -12. Basically they were about the same player. Both great both hall of fame players. I always see this comment about Hakeem to DR and frankly DR is probably the most perfect Center of the 1990s to preset with no flaws.
@@isiahwashington2999 the eye test alone would tell one that Hakeem was the better player.
@@bAkra60 sorry just can’t agree. Both great. If one is better it is minimally. It is not like Parrish who is great versus Kareem who is a legend. The separation is very small and depends what year it is and how old they are. Peak Hakeem to arguably better, but barely. If Hakeem was so dominant why did DR have a huge advantage in the regular season in wins?
He’s my Favorite center in nba history the dude was a defensive monster he’s in the top 10 in steals and in my opinion the best two way player in nba history
So what was the closest Shaq got to leading Nba in rebounding?
Regular season Shaq only ever hit #2 behind Dikembe Mutumbo in 99-00. In the playoffs he did lead in 99-00 and 00-01 seasons.
@@mmhmmthatright6900wrong 1993 & 1994 he was second as well
@@melvynsngltn27 AAh missed that one thanks
If you so tall you have an easy advantage. Guys like him and Wilt. You can dunk and do hoops close easily with using your strength and jumping up. But he couldnt do 3 pointers, three throws or alley oops that good. Its much harder for small players like Stockton or Jordan but they was more allround and athletic.
I wonder where jokic will end up at the end of his career if he continues to stay healthy and ball lights out
Top 50 if he's lucky
The 4th best center is George Mikan, followed by Moses Malone.
Cap
@@jacobway468 No... Double Cap!!
O'neal took a massive beating during his career from defenses. He had to maintain, no need to exhaust yourself for rebounds, when you have to score 28 each game
C'mon man... Career Rebounds Per 100 possessions: Hakeem 15.5 Shaq 16.1 🤷🏾♂
Most of the people seeing this video and commenting, myself included never got to see Wilt Chamberlin in his prime. For all the young basketball fans out there, take the time look at the you tube vids he was was insane. Shaq belongs in the conversation, to say because he didnt lead the league in rebounding is the reason he is out misses a huge factor. Basketball changed because of Shaq, when he came into the league he was unbelievable and no it wasnt JUST the ref's giving him calls he dominated. Most people remember the Lakers shaq, go back and watch him with the Magic in 93,94 some of those games were crazy and it isnt his fault he got to LA and they happened to have Kobe Bryant who is in my top 5 and Im a gen xer who grew up on Bird and Magic.
Rebounds but when could he make a shot? I remember watching LA play and cringe Shaq was the worst at the foul line. Like Bruh help your team. Versus Jordan or other players. Shaq had no shot.
@@wittenstienspavlov3699 Ya I got you, I mean its not like I'm saying hes 1 or 4 or 13 but top 20? He had his way with people in the post and in the lane the second he got on the floor with the magic. I mean if we did a list I wouldnt be shocked to see him anywhere from 17-28 but his inability to rebound which is the argument made in the video is a weak argument, yours is WAY stronger. Take care.
@@wittenstienspavlov3699 No shot but averaged 23 points a game and 10 rebounds and is 8th on the all time scoring list. Ya if you compare his shooting to Jordan, hes going to come up short every time. Did he make his team better? By being dominate in the post yes I think he did certainly in his early days. But ya the guy didnt have a jump shot and was horrible from the line, so was wilt chamberlain.
@@thegenxgamerraveraged over 26ppg and 10rbs for 10yrs straight averaged 12.5rbs during his first 12 years
Shaq would have fouled out in the first quarter in Wilt's era if you watch how they called the games then
I agree with Bob. Shaq didn’t train & got winded easily.
I remember watching him as a kid and he got winded. I stopped watching NBA after Jordan retired and that was my new person to watch.
Lie
He averaged 43 min per game in the playoffs. And won.
Bob Ryan has it right when he lists his top five centers
Okay top 10 I don’t think but he’s DEFINITELY 20 though.
Bob Ryan W
correct
Name 20 better
This was brutal 🙊
brutal but a true fact
Shaq is arguably in the Top-200 of centers. People ahead of him off the top of my head include Kareem, Wilt, Bill Russell, Moses Malone, George Mikan, Artis Gilmore, Darryl Dawkins, Bill Walton, Alvan Adams. More recent players ahead of him would include Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, Bill Laimbeer, Vlade Divac, David Robinson, Arvydas Sabonis, Mark Eaton, Bryant Reeves, Greg Ostertag, Luc Longley. But I would rank Shaq higher than Sam Bowie and Joe Kleine.
Joe Klein lol
I preferred Hakeem, Robinson and Ewing to Shaq and for a year or 2 even Daugherty might have been a better all around player. That being said Shaq won 3 finals mvp in a row and as good as Kobe was, Shaq was legitimately the better guy on those years. Divac was fun to watch but his best season ever would not be better than Shaq in his worst. Walton is revered but he didn’t accomplish a fraction of what Shaq did. Laimbeer was never better than 4th best on his team really. The Joe Klein response was the perfect joke haha. I love Robinson but even he doesn’t have Shaq’s hardware. Hakeem to me is indisputably better. Some of those names are a joke. Shaq was a monster. Arrogant, selfish, lazy short sighted are all fair criticisms but we don’t dismiss any other 3 in a row mvp types unless it’s Bird, and he’s also underrated. Under rating Shaq is almost that bad. Duncan left with more titles but he wasn’t a real center. After 1998 there has not been a better center in the league than Shaq. How’s that for a description of how great he is. And some of those other names are just names he beat the crud out of haha. In the first 1 or two all star games the other centers out played him, but by the late 90s Shaq was changing the league and how people thought they might build teams that could win.
finally a non biased answer agree with all this
Willis Reed...2 titles 2 Finals MVPs...
Everyone has an opinion.
Went to LSU with Shaq. I am the same age. Thought he'd be maybe the greatest. He was a major disappointment in every way. Fat, can't make free throws, got all the calls in NBA, can't rebound, skirted on the coat tails of Wade and Kobe, and arrogant as well. Totally overrated.
Really is rebounding the only knock you have on shaq really shaq is easily a top 10 player no nba player besides micheal and shaq have won 3 finals mvps in a row
MJ, Larry Legend, Magic, go from there lmao...
Shaq in his prime was unstoppable, he's a top 20 player of all time easily. He forced the NBA to change the game just like Wilt, Kareem and Curry have over the course of their careers. I would put Shaq behind Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt, Russell and Olajuwon on the all time center's list. And I was never a big time Shaq supporter throughout his career.
Career points less than Kareem and Wilt, won less championships than Russell, less skilled/technical than Olajuwon, less records than Wilt. Shaq was great, but he was only fifth greatest.
disagree wilt, bryant, bird, jordan, duncan, Durant, Robinson, Irving, Wade, abdul, west,....way better than shaq. Shaq jumped only 1 foot and can dunk since his height. I stopped watching basketball because of shaq and lebron. Can't wait for lebron to retire. What's shaq's 3 point and free throw record? just saying. Curry GOAT!
Shaq is a top 5 -6 Center, I don't think top 20 player. MJ, Bird, Magic, Wilt, Jabbar, Russell, West, Robertson, Olajuwon, Duncan, Baylor, Mikan, Kobe, Elvin Hayes, Moses Malone, add on lol...
@@MrPgrawe I believe that I have Shaq ranked as the the 5th best center.
@@wittenstienspavlov3699 That's your right to disagree.
I love Shaq the man, but I think Ryan's absolutely right on this one. Shaq was overrated. He didn't dominate with time-honed skills or high bball IQ, he just dominated with brute force. He never took the time to develop a decent shooting touch or any other ball skills, and even ended up being a liability at the end of close games. He was often benched in those situations for fear the other team would intentionally foul him to put him on the line.
He was never intentionally benched now your lying
Bro, being one of the greatests is about how EFFECTIVE you were in the court not about how many skills you had as a player. You can be 1 dimensionally skilled and STILL be the best player on the court. Pau Gasol was a more skilled player than Shaq but is Gasol a better overall player than Shaq? No.
You don’t understand what you are talking about.
Hes honestly not lying Shaqs highlights are great and he by the eye test appears to be the best center. But hes generally lazy , has poor help defense , spurts of defensive layoffs and guys like Divac and Sabonis shut him down despite refs cheating for him. I think top 20 is fair all things considered.
Yup pretty much what i saw when he played.
shaq cannot be the best center when it's come to the eye test smh have you seen hakeem olajuwan
Divac and Sabonis never shut him down. Shaq avg at least 25 ppg in every series vs. either guy. Stop this revisionistic BS.
You a goddamn lie
The problem with these discussions in this day and age is that any player who played before Bird and Magic (except Wilt) is automatically disregarded.
Recency bias is everything. That's why guys like Lebron are mentioned in the same breath as Jordan, but Oscar Robertson, West, and Baylor aren't. Wilt only gets mentioned because his stats are so overwhelming you can't ignore them...yet even he is usually ranked AFTER Jordan.
I do find it hard to place Shaq over the likes of Akeem, Moses Malone, or Mikan though.
Bruh shaq is way above George mikan
NA 7' 1" and 330lbs just play in the NFL. Shaq was the worst to watch as a player. No skill. Just big and dominating. like Yao Ming like bruh your 7' ft 6" anyone your height should be in another league or the hoop should be 15 ft in height. Jordan 6' 6" Curry 6' 2" has shot and game. @@jacobway468
shaq aint even in the top 100
Shaw is not top ten
Olajuwon 4th best center all time?...Sorry bob,And you've been watching the nba longer than i have,But not that much longer,The dream imo is the best center of all time,No other center DOMINATED at both ends of the floor like the dream did,The only one who came close was wilt,And personally i think olajuwon would have eaten wilts lunch on a consistent basis,Let me add one more thing,Olajuwon NEVER played alongside another legitimate superstar in his career,Imagine magic or isiah or bird alongside dream,Your talking 5,6 championships minimum...Tell me I'm wrong!
Ralph Sampson was a superstar even if for just a couple of seasons next to Olajuwon before injuries derailed his NBA career.
You’re wrong! ☮️🖖🏽
Definitely overrated. Like LeFlop, they BOTH think very highly of THEMSELVES. LeFlop's self-proclamation that he's the GOAT & KING. And Shaq claiming he is a Top 10 NBA player. When you have to stroke your own ego, that's a sign of insecurity, IMO.
Being insecure means 0 about whether you actually played great basketball or not.
Agree well stated,
I don't think I'll ever get tired of laughing at lebron haters 😂
Cant wait for lebron to retire maybe i'll actually watch basketball after he retires. Curry is way better than lebron AKA fake "jordan" while curry can play golf and other sports and be a true athlete. Retire Leborn Please we can't stand watching you. @@Alec30
once hes is retired like Payton or Brady you can feel the best and good all you want. @@Alec30
EASILY the most OVERRATED ever. Shaq was at no point ever was the best player on his team; always carried by Penny, Kobe, Wade, then desperate for Nash. How can the fourth best centre of the 90s after Hakeem, Robinson, and Ewing (and yes, stats back that up) and the guy who was clearly not as good as the best PF in the 00s be the most dominant?!?! It’s been laughable to watch the NBAs desperation post-Jordan, especially with their different rules for Shaq-hell, the guy was the only person in the league who was allowed to foul on almost every play and people went to jail for fixing games to help his and the Lakers legacy. Shaq is the original team-jumping glory-freeloader before LeBron. Fact!
Ewing is so underrated, it's unbelievable.
What are you 5?
Dude If I could draft any player in history at age 20 to start a franchise....it's Shaq all day. That's over Jordan too
Your drunk
Jokic is better than Shaq.
Ridiculous to think he's barely top 20. Only four people have more all-NBAs- Lebron, Kobe, Kareem and Duncan (Shaq and Karl Malone are tied with 14). Only Kareem has more first-team selections by a center, and only 13 total have more -Lebron, Kobe, Karl Malone, Kareem, Duncan, Cousy, West, MJ, Petit, Elgin, Oscar, Bird, Magic).
In the 90s he had to go against the golden era of centers with Hakeem, Ewing, Robinson, Mourning, Mutumbo, etc. Most probably have him as the third-best center of the 90s behind Hakeem and Robinson. From 89-90 to 98-99, Hakeem and Robinson had eight All-NBA selections, Shaq had six despite not playing three of those seasons, while Ewing had five. And I don't think anyone disputes Shaq was the best center of the 2000s.
At his peak, I'd say the only people all-time really in the conversation with Shaq are Wilt, MJ, Lebron and Kareem.
I think people (rightfully) believe Shaq should have been better and count that against him. He should have been in the GOAT discussion and he's not. Still, I don't see an argument for him to not be in the top 10 discussion. Personally I have him at 8.
Shaq sucks rebound warrior since no one else was in the league that could handle a 320 lb man, Rodmen was a better rebound person than Shaq any day.
did lbj lead the league in rebounding?
Shaq is by far in the top 20. Old man needs to stop
shaq made me quit watching basketball. Disagree. Have respect to him as a business man but basketball not so much.
BobThis is why you lose credibility. I agree Shaq could have and should have been a better rebounder but what you miss is his dominance and that makes him top 10-12. Russell couldn't shoot but because he was a Celtic his weaknesses doesn't fall under your scrutiny. You've got a lot of biases but you probaly never look within yourself.
Shaq sucks if they put him in the NBA hall of fame I will cry
Shaq was a horrible player. Kobe was his go to man. Shaq had his height, 320 lb weight, and no skill. And from a viewer and former athlete no respect for him as a basketball player. Cringe watching him in commercials now. UGH. How was Shaq's 3 point and free throw record? Just saying.
I'm not saying he's top 5 top whatever. But "Shaq was a horrible player" is just an insane thing to say 😂
Watching jordan and scottie pippen, Bryant, Curry, wilt, iverson, and many more Shaq was a joke i'd rather watch reals of the best in 1970's and 1980's than watch shaq dunk and rebound which was boring. @@Alec30
@@Alec30 How was Shaq's 3 point and free throw record? Just saying. I remember that being a problem on the team from reports.
3 straight Finals MVP's. Only other player to do that is Jordan.
He didn’t need to shoot 3 pointers to dominate .
Finally! A 3 foot shooter. Couldn't rebound, pass and defend. Mediocre IQ.
Wilt, Kareem, Russell, Walton, Hakeem, Malone, Parish, Shaq.
Shaq is the best center ever
Shaq was a lazier less skilled wilt.
