    Plenty of coins again - but only one silver which was a bit of a bummer. I have already done most of this site very thoroughly with my Etrac but still managed to find a few older coins.
    There will still be plenty left to find as there are still acres of land to go at.

    The detecting videos show the best bits of my life. The work parts get in the way of what I'd rather be doing so I am altering my work and where I get income from to allow me more time. Problem is, building that up in addition to working full time is very tiring, hence the lack of videos lately, lol.
    In 2-3 months there will be a nation of videos coming as my plans are coming together quite well.
    Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos.

    The series of videos to watch is 'Worldwide Metal Detecting Finds'. I'm uploading part 5 in the next couple of days. If you're interested in what is being found around the world that series should provide some good viewing for you.

    When I go to a local park I have started digging all decent signals to try and find a ring or two. So far only ringpulls and modern coins.
    Thanks for watching.

    I rarely hunt parks and live miles from the beach so I| don't keep a running total of how much spendable money I find - probably around £40-£50?
    Nearly all of the coin finds are pre-decimal pennies and half pennies with a scattering of silvers thrown in.
    I'd always go for the Garrett propointer.
    Thanks for watching and appreciate the videos.

    As far as I know all the predecimal stuff from Victoria to Elizabeth II was legal tender. Detecting finds (pocket spills) often have a mixture of early Elizabeth II, George V and worn Victorian coins so that would seem to be the case.
    Thanks for watching.

    If you watch 'Metal Detecting Day and Night' (one of my latest videos) I clean up an very corroded silver coin on that one. I normally just use baking soda and water but sometimes spit and tin (aluminum) foil if it is really black.
    This one just needed baking soda.

    Hello Richard, I’m watching some of your old detecting videos and can’t believe this video is 11 years old and my comment is 10 years old. Time goes by so fast. I would love to see some new metal detecting videos from you. I learned so much back in the day from watching your fantastic videos. And I’ve found thousands of things since so I thank you. Take care. GL&HH for old times sake.. p.s was watching one of your worldwide finds videos that I featured in. Ged (peacehavens) was also in the video and i recently found out that he has since sadly passed away. Ged was another original detectorist here on TH-cam. He will be sadly missed.

      (my other channel) Nooooo...that is really sad to hear that Ged has gone as he seemed like a really nice guy.
      In a time or rampantly fake TH-cam 'detecting' videos we surely need good characters like Ged but they're few and far between now - I only communicated with him a few times over the years but he came across as a genuinely nice guy.
      I still go out from time to time but as you know it takes an age to find enough to make a decent video.
      I'm glad you're still detecting and finding interesting stuff - best of luck when you're out.
      As far as I remember 'Good Luck and Happy Hunting' was the phrase of the day when I was making videos so I'll leave you with that.

    It depends how deep they are much of the time and soil composition may also change readings of targets. An old penny can read from 12-38 to 12-46 but often bounces down to the mid 20's on ferrous if very deep. I suppose different countries will use different alloys to create their coins. Modern 2p can read up to 12-48 but they are made of muck and can be picked up with a magnet - usually come up looking worse than a coin buried for 100 years - lol.
    Thanks for watching, man.

    When I was young I used an old C-scope but when I got back into it a couple of years ago I got a Garrett Ace 150 and found a few things but then jumped straight to an etrac once I realised I could potentially make some good finds in my local area and wanted to go deeper with better discrimination. My mate uses a Garrett Euroace and it is an excellent detector. I would recommend that as a starter detector as it will last for years and still finds plenty of good stuff.

    @pondguru  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    They were just wet as I gave them a quick rinse to remove the soil. If I had soaked them in olive oil for a month or so it would give a similar effect and is the best way I've found to clean and preserve old copper coins. I've got a couple of coins soaking now - maybe I should do a video of them when they me out as sometimes even fine detail can be revealed.

    What an interesting hobby.....there's not a whole lot of detecting in Ireland at least in daylight at any rate as It's rumored that some detector users go out at night. Not a lot of stuff gets handed over to the museums either and this is mainly because of what happened to a MR Weston in the early eighties. He found a priceless gold chalice and other treasures on land where he had permission to use his detector. He handed his fine in to the national museum and after being treated very rudely by it's inhabitants, he was eventually offered a very small amount of money. A court case followed which lasted several years and almost broke Mr Weston financially and health wise. This undoubtedly frightened most off of handing valuable finds in to museums. A few years ago in this area a woman was putting turf or peat on her fire when she spotted a shiny object. It turned out to be a large gold brooch thought to be around twelve hundred years old and this had lain in the bog all that time. She handed it in and I hole she was fairly rewarded.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tim mcCaffrey As far as I know detecting is banned in Ireland so that is probably why everyone goes out at night, lol.
      We get problems over here with people going out at night too but I suppose it is no different to having people poaching deer, pheasants or fish.
      There will always people willing to risk getting shot by poaching.

  • @pondguru

    The costs will depend on which country you are buying from so I'll do an equipment list and then you can do a Google search for sellers of each item to get prices in your country:
    Minelab etrac detector
    18 x 15 SEF coil
    Garrett Propointer

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    For an entry level (but very good) detector the Garrett Euro Ace costs £279 online. As with anything there are fanboys who will cuss up other detectors but I've found the euroace very impressive. I use a Minelab etrac and wouldn't swap it for anything else as I hunt deep pasture. I got mine from Joan Allen in the UK.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Anywhere you can get permission really. Then research the history, ask the landowner for pointers and if anyone else had found anything previously then look for sites where houses may have been, footpaths, likely picnic sites etc. - see my detecting video 'research' in the playlist on my channel.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some fields are like that but once they are well detected you sure miss the excitement of multiple finds.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Unless its silver it generally isn't anything to get excited about as the coppers don't come up in pristine condition. Some of the older ones (17th and 18th century) can be worth a bit if they are good. As silver doesn't degrade the coins tend to be worth much more and before 1920 they were sterling silver (92.5%). Many of the old coins in the US will be worth more in poorer condition as there aren't as many about as we have in UK.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, under the 'treasure act' anything which is of significance and/or silver / gold over 300yrs old is likely to be classed as treasure and is to be handed to a finds officer. It is then put to museums and if they want it you get a reward, if not you get it back. Sounds very similar to your laws.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're the second person this week to think I am Welsh, lol
    I live in North East England about 10 miles West of Newcastle and just go in the local fields. If you know any landowners ask them for permission or join a club as they often have some great land to go on. There's always the beach too.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Luckily a ban will never be imposed in the UK as there are so many archaeologists who would be out of a job without the detectorists identifying the sites for them.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  11 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @Full_Metal_Digger
    @Full_Metal_Digger 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice finds guy! I'm a bit surprised those large coppers only come in as 12-41. Our U.S. large cents (early to mid 1800s) ring up 12-47 (the same as our modern clad quarters) nearly every time. HH, Dave.

    The guy who runs the show up there knew I went detecting and suggested I had a look about in the grounds then I went up and gave it a good hammering with the etrac. Strange place as some areas had large concentrations of coins and other areas have nothing at all.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would probably go second hand for that budget as new machines won't offer many features or depth for $200. As for what is available in the US I have no idea. Over here I would go for a Garrett Euroace 350 as a starter machine as it will be a long time before you feel the need to upgrade. Not sure you'd get a used one for $200 but my mate has one and I have been very impressed with it. Much better than Ace 150 or 250.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The larger and shallower silver coins read higher but alot of English silver coins are quite thin so read lower. The soil does tend to harden around older copper coins and form the 'coin ball' in most pasture land which hasn't ever been turned over.
    Silver coin production ended over here in 1947 as we gave you pesky Americans all our silver to pay toward our war debt - lol.
    The etrac loves silver - shallow coins are very easily detected but smaller deeper coins need listening for.

    I would skip all the cheapo detectors as they are a waste of time and money. For enjoyment and good results I would personally go for a Garrett Euroace as it had good discrimination, great depth and very accurate pinpointing. A great machine for the money.
    The wand thingy is a Garrett propointer which helps to rapidly locate targets in soil.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really don't have much idea at all. I went from a Garrett ace 150 to an etrac so missed out a huge chunk of affordable detectors. My mate had got a Garrett euroace which gets down to impressive depths and he has found deep coins with it - not sure of cost though.

    Yeah, it is great to bash coins now and again. I'm hoping that a new detector will drag a few more coins from these sites as some areas of them are very contaminated with iron. I should have an XP Deus arriving soon so I'm very interested to try that on the coin shooting sites as I've found almost no jewelry with the etrac and it has to be there somewhere.

    Cool video , interesting to see finds from over seas . foreign coins are found quite a bit here in the states . I'm told it is because of the lack of currency during the colonial days and even later. A guy in our club found a REALE forget the date. It's always a blast to be the first to detect a site loaded with coins . One time I found a not so old home site and where the basketball hoop used to be I found over 25 silver coins from the early 30's to early 60's. Subscribed

    Coppers dug out of the ground are seldom worth much if anything unless they are in very good condition and older than victorian. Silvers will nearly always be worth more than copers unless the coppers are of a rare date, very old or in excellent condition.

    Regarding your handle: I had a WWII era shaving kit, and the handle looked quite similar. If that's what it is, the top of the handle should have a threaded hole where the head holding the blade would screw in. It fit neatly into a small brass case. I hope that helps.

    That's the opposite of England.
    You can wander into any field and find a coin or musket ball etc. I'm not exaggerating either as every field I have detected in I've found a coin for miles around my house.

    I think I'll go back up there soon as I could do with some coin bashing. Most of the land I have is fairly well done now.
