HI Tom. You are amazing. I have practiced so long for landscape and animals, never dare to try to do portrait. But the light and shadow you explained in the video is clear and easy to follow. Thank you so much.

Sorry, hit the post button too soon! I was just saying that I really appreciate your ability to explain how the basics of “notan”, which is simply light ans shadow, underpin getting a good composition. Once that is established, then you play with colour! After years of doing commercial art I am coming back to doing art I enjoy! Thank you, and looking forward to following your new work!

Hi Tom I’ve registered for your online school. Really love how you splat the paint around and your use of color. What brings me to the question did you use French ultramarine for the shadows in this painting? If so can I use it to darken up phatalo blue? Thank you. Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱

Thanks Georgina!!:) I did have french ultramarine on the palette, along with Prussian (pthalo would be an alternative). I really only used it to darken the reddy shadows in their darkest places, and a touch of it for the shadow on the neck scarf. Pthalo Blue is all ready deper and darker than Ultramarine so I don't think it would make it darker. A great way to darken Pthalo, because it is all ready soo greeney, is it's opposite, red. Ideally a warmer red. Because they are so opposing and pthalo is so strong and dark all ready. In the right amounts they cancel each other out and create a beautiful deep rich dark. You can almost get black but it has juts a little more character to it. T

I love how you paint and thinking of joining your on line school but I’m not sure if this will be too advanced for me. It looks very difficult. Any advice on this I would appreciate as I would join while the discount is still on. Thank you. Linda Brown
