    Most younger people don't get it because of Heath Ledger, the original Joker's skin is actually bleached white and his hair is green.
    Ledger's interpretation is original to him and does not reflect the comics or any previous movies. In actuality Heath Ledger's Joker was an ordinary man with makeup, not a meta human caused by a chemical bath.

      The long term damage Ledger (or really Nolan) did to the Joker character is immeasurable, yes Ledger gave a good performance, but he did not really play the Joker

    • @alarkhar
      @alarkhar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@alcarbo8613 Agreed. Ledger's Joker was an anarchist with homicidal tendencies - basically, he was Hush (another of Batman's enemies) with a glasgow grin and makeup.
      The original Joker from the comic is no anarchist, no revolutionary, doesn't play for power or try to demonstrate a single thing. He's just bats**t insane. He's the kind of man that kidnaps three comedy writers to actually have a punchline for his heists (he did, in the silver age). He's the kind of person that won't use a gun if a killer yo-yo would make for a better joke. He sold his freakin' soul to the DEVIL for a box of exploding cigars, for Pete's sake! Seriously, we're talking about a man that, in a crossover with Judge Dredd, was judged INNOCENT by Judge Death, an insane undead monster from a world where life itself is considered a crime! A person that is so far off the bend that Scarecrow's fear toxin has absolutely no effect on him!
      This is what Joker is. And, may he rest in peace, Heath Ledger, while undoubtedly VERY talented, ain't even close.

    • @fynnthefox9078
      @fynnthefox9078 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, since Nolan's Batman universe is set in the real world, a real life Joker would wear clown paint instead of being dowsed in chemicals that bleach his skin.

    People forget that Joker ACTUALLY died in Batman #1. The guilt over Joker's death was the reason Batman established his "No Killing" rule. The writers later brought Joker back to life numerous times, mostly because fans loved such a wild, ridiculous character, making him a seemingly perfect foil for the always serious crusader.

    Yep, the chemicals altered Joker's hair and skin color. It's a famous part of his usual backstory. Joker also isn't the one who killed Batman's parents in other versions.
    Harley Quinn originated later in the cartoon Batman: The Animated Series from 1992. I haven't seen it, but from what I've heard it's a bit darker and mature cartoon (especially compared to many other cartoons at the time, I mean the whole Harley and her abusive relationship with Joker originated here) and Mark Hamill is iconic as the Joker (many consider him the best Joker.) This was the first Batman movie I ever saw, so this one is special to me. The first 4 Batman movies are uniquely different, so I'm curious to see your reactions to the rest. Tim Burton did a really good job blending the dark and serious atmosphere with the silly/corny humor of the comics. Its really a testament to Batman being as versatile of a character as he is. He can be silly and ridiculous in the 60s (can't wait for Batman '66) and be super serious and dramatic in the Nolan films. That's part of why Batman's my favorite. Interesting thing to note: Batman doesn't actually kill anyone until after he finds out the Joker killed his parents in this version. This is because there was a rewrite to the script for the third act to tie the two even closer, and Burton wanted to include elements of the Golden Age Batman stories, like him using lethal force only when necessary.
    The original screenwriter, Sam Hamm, wasn't happy about the rewrite, and as he is currently writing the Batman 89 digital comics, is taking pains to maintain the "Batman doesn't kill" rule as being what Batman does after the events of the Burton films.

    As with comic books this would be one of the stories of The Batman, Joker etc. Comics were doing different stories of these characters for years. This was the 1st movie to plant in our heads that Joker has a beginning, middle and end. Even the comics never did that and kept The Joker's origins a secret. Heath Ledger's Joker kept that secret.
    A lot of people didn't really want to see an origin story ever and were afraid of Joaquin Phoenix's Joker breaking that. Well, you should know how that turned out. Big moneymaker and best actor award.
    Another Joker, however, did come out in the TV series, Gotham which ran 5 seasons from 2014-2019. That is the origin story of how Jim Gordon became Commissioner Gordon and has all the Batman Troups, villains, etc including you know who but The Joker comes later in the series but kept the Joker's name out of it. The Joker, eventually did come out but the creators still wanted to keep it a secret, no Joker name. The actor who played that no name Joker was played by Cameron Monaghan who started out playing the character Jerome Valeska. There are a couple of twists about that I'm not going to say, you have to watch but I have to say that the actor Cameron Monaghan is becoming the most underrated to play a Joker, The Joker, or even the ideology of The Joker. As I said, you have to watch The series.
    One thing the Gotham series did bring out was the character Alfred. In this show, he's a fighting Alfred played beautifully by Sean Pertwee and I think he was the best Alfred in all of Batman. That Alfred really kicked ass, but again you have to watch The series.
    Thank you for this reaction and I hope you understand my gibberish as I'm not very great in writing.

    Michael Keaton is one hell of an actor, especially in the movies beetlejuice Jack Frost, and the new RoboCop for 2014.
    Prince definitely lay down some good music in this movie as well as had a music video for it
    Batman's always has a vehicle for the year the one with Adam West was the bat-copter, for this Batman the jet is called the batwing, which later on got better designs

    I say all superhero films now owe it to Batman (1989) making it the real OG and most important. It's subtle abstract instead of overanalysed so there's always more to revisit. It has practical visuals and sets instead of being 96% CG. It especially tells a self-contained story instead sequel teasing. It would take paragraphs to list why it's so great. Truly one of my personal all time favourite movies.

    Before this movie came out, a bunch of fan mail arrived at WB studios. (Back when we actually had to mail via envelope with postage stamp.) Comic book fans claimed Keaton was too much of a comedian. The movie came out and they stood corrected. I watched it with my dad in theatres on release night. The grandiose architecture, dark lighting, and the mixture of modern tech with 1940s gangsters inspired Batman the Animated series. Good times.

    I really enjoyed your reactions and comments for Tim Burton's "BATMAN" very much. I was really invested in this one a lot. Although Jack Nicholson is one of my favorite actors in many other films he is not my favorite Joker.... don't get me wrong Jack Nicholson as the Joker was great but for this role he just wasn't my favorite "BATMAN" villain . As for BATMAN I have to say that I Love Michael Keaton as BATMAN.... absolutely a favorite of mine and I think Michael Keaton was very believable in this role as a fictional character . This movie showed his very human side with his feelings about his parents, Alfred , and with Vicky Vail but added the undying and heroic side of BATMAN . Alfred was a great wingman here .
    As for Vicky Vail.... she was from the start BATMAN's Lady and there was not anyone in his life before her . "Where does he get all those wonderful toys ?" Is one of my favorite movie quotes of all . Thank you for your reactions and comments for this so much.

    I always remembered something about this movie that I could never figure out...until recently. You see, twice they say in this movie that Vicki Vale was famous for taking photographs of Corto Maltese. I always wondered what it was. Was it a dictator that got assassinated, hence the gruesome photos? Was it a terrorist organization, like the League of Shadows? Was it a cult? Was it a revolutionary movement? Well, actually, it's a fictional South American island nation in the Batman universe. It was at the center of an incident not unlike the Cuban missile crisis. Corto Maltese was also the site of a rebel uprising. The tiny nation received the arrival of Soviet Destroyers of its coast. Since the all of the DC universe is connected, Superman was sent by the US Government to fight the Soviet presence there in secret, until the battle became too intense and the Soviets unleashed the Coldbringer Missile, which weakened Superman considerably, as noted by Batman before their battle at Crime Alley. Vicki Vale traveled there to take photographs of the aftermath. The pictures show dead bodies in a desert setting. Her pictures were selected for an article in TIME magazine.
    That's some crazy lore I was not prepared for. But, I think it's great that this brings a whole lot of information and backstory to an already rich franchise.

    I love this movie so much. It definitely has the Tim Burton touch, but at the same time, it’s not overly Tim Burton-y. The sequel is a little more quirky imo, but this one walks the line between Batman style of gothic and Tim Burton’s style. And obviously, this movie debuted what is widely considered as THE Batman theme song.

    5:28 I'm guessing they guessed from the trailer but the thing is that the Joker is one of the few Batman villains who doesn't have a confirmed 'real' name (ie Mr Freeze - Victor Fries, Catwoman Selena Kyle, Penguin - Oswald Cobblepot) so the name and backstory often change or just aren't given at all in various presentations of the Joker so the audience could've been in the dark about it.
    Edward Nygma is the name generally given to 'The Riddler' but in 'The Dark Knight' Coleman Reese was given a similar backstory to him so he might have been that Franchise's Riddler - wonder if he could answer the question 'now why do you think so many people want you dead?'

    Comic Joker had his skin dyed white and his hair green from falling into the chemical tank at Ace.
    Alicia(Jokers beau)with the mask to hide her disfiguration is actually taken from another Batman villains backstory, Black Mask(rich like Wayne, but homicidal, whose pharmaceutical company got bought out by Wayne after his makeup line scarred the users, did the same to his girlfriend.)
    Ironically, this was the final Batman movie I watched from the originals(started with "Returns"and worked my way down(I know you're crazy enough to watch "B&R", so I doubt my warnings will scare you away from it, lol). Not my favourite, but still pretty good. That final shot of Batman under the signal with the Danny Elfman music and the bells ringing is epic.
    These versions of Batman(from "Batman"to "Forever"is actually pretty lenient about killing, the one rule doesn't appear as much here, as you can see.
