  • SsangYong Rexton is a midsize SUV that has been in production since 2001. Initially, it used Mercedes ML engines, but over time these were replaced by Koren powertrains, although still mated to Mercedes' G-Tronic transmissions. The second generation Rexton debuted in 2017. It shares the body-on-frame design with the Musso pickup. For 2020, SsangYong Rexton underwent a facelift. The car now features a prominent radiator grille, which would not look out of place on a recent BMW SUV. Also an 8-speed automatic transmission was added. SsangYong's styling is uncomplicated, but the car has presence. The Rexton is similar in size to the Kia Sorento, Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz G-Class or Toyota Land Cruiser. Although its character is closer to that of the slightly larger Highlander.

    One of the very few body-on-frame SUVs on sale in Europe.
    Most SUVs nowadays are unibody construction which is cheaper to make.

    Quite reasonable price. Finding service centers may be tricky and resale options, at least near me, are very thin. So you will use the car until either of you dies.

    I realy like the Rexton. It is one of the few alternatives to the LC 150 on the european market. Only missing a permanent 4wd and a rear locker.

  • @MarthaMansbridge
    @MarthaMansbridge ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Have had both the Rexton and the Musso - both are excellent, proper SUV/4WD vehicles - very well built and reliable. Point to note - the reference in the manual to the rear 'diff lock' engaging automatically - it's likely that your model doesn't have this feature - it's not standard, the U.K. version also does not have it. I don't really understand why Ssangyong chose not to make this standard given the size and likely purpose of this sort of car - but there it is.

    • @MarekDrivesENG

    I think this would be an excellent 'retirement spec' SUV, especially for those outdoorsy types. It sounds like it would tow a caravan quite easily, and with low range 4WD it'll get you pretty much anywhere you'd want to go. It looks comfortable enough on the inside too, and not too much scary tech. Resale wouldn't be an issue either :)

    If for no other reason I appreciate it a whole lot as one of the only body-on-frame SUVs in Europe left, as all Land/Range rovers are monococque nowadays and the new generation of Land Cruiser is too heavy for EU car classification. It's a ton of value, and is probably the most competent Ssangyong product by far, at least until the Torres arrives and then we'll see.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว

      Torres looks very promising, though some "offroad" accents are amusing.

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Land Cruiser 300 series is not too heavy. It pushes their corporate emissions too high and can’t compete with Range Rover. The new Grenadier in passenger vehicle form weighs 2.7 tons or more, which is what the LC300 weighs, and there is no restriction to its sale.

    I am old enough to remember Ssangyong as a budget alternative of a real deal. For the price they are asking now you can buy a real deal instead.

    • @KenanGwallter
      @KenanGwallter ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There is no other real deal that can go off-road like this one and have its comfort for 50000E. You could go for the Land Cruiser, which with some options is around 75000.

    • @MarthaMansbridge
      @MarthaMansbridge ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can only speak for the U.K but for a car of this size, spec and capability you would be looking to spend £60k as a minimum - and that would get you mid-spec cars such as the Land Cruiser, Defender etc. You can have a fully specified Rexton for £45k. In terms of build, fit and finish this is no budget alternative at all.

    • @KenanGwallter
      @KenanGwallter ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MarthaMansbridge I wouldn't touch a brand new Defender even with a 10-foot pole. Land Rovers suck when it comes to reliability. And here, in Romania, the cheapest Land Cruiser is 11000E more than the full Rexton. And the cheapest Land Cruiser sucks when it comes to comfort and options.

    Hi Marek!

    Thanks!

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, no idea what versions though. I suppose bringing an EV version to Eastern Europe and the Balkans (I'm assuming Balkans by your name) is pointless.

    • @mironiko
      @mironiko ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you: we (the Balkans, you guessed it right, I'm from Serbia, actually) usually get the petrol version of everything that has a petrol version, but there are rare cases when the car brand unifies the offer across Europe (or even wider than Europe), and then we're left only with some cars we can't afford...
      Anyway, thanks for the reply!

  • @garminbreak
    @garminbreak ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice car. More than SUV - low gear range, real mechanical difflock on rear axle as option, but less than offroader - low clearance, fuel tank bottom lower than the frame without any shield, unshielded alu case of rear differential, unshielded wires and cables on the chassis with dubious sealing...
    But value to price ratio is very good.

    I can't find the prices for the Ssanoung Rexton in Bulgaria, but 60K euro is the price of the Toyota LandCruiser Prado here. And they have some in that can be bought without waiting. It used to be my dream car, but when I tested it last year, I got really disappointed. The top spec version with the air suspension was like a truck, the diesel engine was very noisy, my dream got destroyed basically.

    • @KenanGwallter
      @KenanGwallter ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Rexton with all bells and whistles, 5 seats and 18" rims is 50000E in Romania. Getting mine next week after 4 months of waiting. Also, I'll be installing the Ironman 4x4 suspension kit, which raises the car 3.5cm and drastically improves the comfort both on asphalt and offroad. This kit is 1000E + the installation fee. It's a bargain for this price. Can't recommend it enough!

      @MarekDrivesENG  ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it all depends on how long you're planning to drive the car for. For me owning a vehicle is an 8-12 years affair. Anything earlier I'm taking a significant depreciation hit on a car that should still be in good working order, and anything later exposes me to some potential costly repairs. But residuals on a 10-year old car don't really matter.
      If I want to swap cars more frequently, then leasing is less hassle (also in my case it's a company tax write off, etc.)
