I was raised in Total Air War, and there you learn that everything is a potential target, pending on the campaign you could find yourself fighting US equipment with US equipment, and it was even possible to be F-22 on F-22. A lot of fun, and plausible in that game's timeline.
Hey guys, I did the calculations for the Mach number that the missile peaked at. It is an absolute beast at 76655 ft and going 4506 knots, the equivalent of Mach 7.7973 or ~ Mach 7.8.

I think it’s possible but probably not too effective. It’s a cruise missile, so the target would have to be at low altitude and low speed. Keep in mind that, the target usually will try to switch off the radar once it detects an anti-radiation missile coming it’s way to throw it off. The missile typically has some smart algorithms against fixed emitters, but against a fast moving and maneuvering AWACS it won’t work. The question is, why would you use an anti radiation cruise missile against AWACS when you have way more effective med-long range active radar A-A missiles.

Not sure it is ever been done, a stand missle would be more effective, but technically it should be possible, the dome radar emits the same signal as the ground based versions. Which is what the missle tracks on to, to make a ground hit. So possible, I say yes.

The top speed of missile: 8.341,408km/h, the range traveled: 287km, max altitude reached 28.8m above earth!!! WOW, WOW, speechless. The hit was at speed over 3000 knots!!! Phhhuuu, this missile needs a better mothership`s radar. It could go over 200nm for sure.
If you watch old military films they have used civ aircraft for testing purposes. I honestly prefer that to using old warbirds. It was sad watching B-17s and Corsairs taking sidewinders. To quote Dr. Jones "That belongs in a museum!"
Honestly I prefer seeing the C-5 galaxy as a target in these vids cause it’s a far more likely target in a real world hot war than an A380, plus the C-5 was around during the peak of the cold war during the 1980s. I also have a soft spot for the C-5 because they were everywhere in A-10 Attack!/A-10 Cuba!, shot down lots of them. Nice video, long range missiles are fascinating.

This is awesome, and what the missle is designed to do. Question is can it hit a smaller target? And I calculated relative to air pressure and speed to nautical miles, it was traveling 5490.2 nautical miles per hour, and land speed 10167.85 km/h. That is very fast.

Just thinking about your "can't shoot what you can't see limiation" could you not use an AWACs and datalink to shoot further? Also unless it's standardised isn't it a bit dodgy having the target coming towards you, wouldn't side aspect be a truer measure of distance. As for civilian airliner stuff - clearly it was an old one converted to use as a target drone.
If the limiting aspect is rocket burn time and battery life; Then is there a way to have those 'turn on' later into the flight, as what is the point wasting power trying to track 100nm away from 'target'. :thinking:
C5 Galaxy of little pieces. The Russians and Chinese both have improved versions of these ultra long range missiles... the Chinese claim 400km .. Missile range increase is the most significant development in warfare since the carrier. Smaller and smaller vessels are getting 2000 km range strike capabilities and not just 4 or 8 missiles, often 30 or more The still in testinf Mercury Corvette could be as many as 40+ Kalibr missiles if it uses the missile pack optional module. That's unprecedented for such a small ship... but thats exactly where technology and miniaturization is taking us.
I'm a bit confused as to how these ranges are being defined. Since the target was closing with the launching aircraft, the missile won't have flown 155 miles. So if you were aiming at a faster incoming target, the "range" could be even higher, though the missile doesn't fly as far? Is there any way to measure flight distance reliably in game?
I thought it was the max range you cold get a lock and fire. While the distance is closing, it is more important to get the first shot at an approaching enemy than it is to chase a fleeing one down at long ranges.

The missile was released at 155 NM away from the target but in the time the missile was traveling towards the target, the target was also traveling towards the missile. Thus at the time of interception the target was closer than 155 NM from the missile's starting location. I feel this is a large flaw in the test in which you can be off by quite a few NM depending on the speed of the C5 in the 2 minutes of travel time the missile had (even though I'm sure the missile can do 155 NM and further, I am for accurate statistics).

The limiting factor here was clearly radar detection, so I think using the single biggest target you can is the play, TBH.

I believe it's because Iran sold the information about f14 and it's radars, aim 154 missile to Russia and China.
Using a civilian plane would be pretty realistic for testing a Russian AA missile. Or testing a Russian SAM, for that matter.
