  • It's one of the most common things you'll have to do with your cat, whether it's for travel or vet appointments. But it may not be their favourite thing to do. Our Winnipeg Humane Society Behaviour expert Nancy is sharing her best #WHSTips for how you can safely and easily get your cat into their travel carrier.

All these videos are great but all the cats in them are perfectly behaved cats, unlike the beasts in our house.

Mr. Midnight's cries at the end of the demo were so realistic. My cat goes hysterical when he sees the cat carrier. He knows!!

The cat handcuffs worked easily and first time for me wow… I had previously had issues putting my one cat in a crate where I ended up giving up altogether.

I had to get my cat nuetored (3 months ago) and he hates carriers the towel worked the first time, but we got the date wrong for the appointment. So, we had to take the cat in again, and this time the towel did not work at all (he expected it and put up a fight when i tried to cover him with it). I ended up with scars from that, and he has a vet appointment in a week I ended up getting a 2 door carrier (because the old carrier is now too small for his brother) and hes been a bit calmer since the surgery, so hopefully this will be easier. However, I am really nervous.

I appreciate your suggestions but you are working with reasonable, educated cats who apparently were sent to an expensive finishing school for felines. 😍😍 Also, you are stronger than I am. I tried the towel but she backed out of it in two seconds. Do you have any other methods? Also, are there any safe, undetectable tranquilizers for cats?

Commit. You have to commit totally. If you hesitate, that cat WILL get away every time. If you're gonna do it, then do it in one smooth sweep. This keeps the cat disoriented long enough for you to complete the transfer into the box. The instant you hesitate, they'll break away.
If I can't acclimate a cat to a carrier with treats over a few days or weeks, and it needs moved 'now', I usually opt for the combo of carrier standing upright, and "kitty handcuffs" under a towel.
      Drop, scoop, plunk, close, cover.
      Drop the towel over them
      Scoop them up quickly
Plunk them into the box butt-first
Close the door /set carrier down properly.
Cover the carrier with a blanket.
      Done!

No way any of these methods would work with my cat. He would put you in hospital if you picked him up, never mind put a towel near him!

LOL MINE TOO! Iv'e never used one for my cat he's a big guy & my husband just picks him up & we put him in the truck. He doesn't like it, but that's the way we have always done it. My other cat she's small we have a carrier for her she would rip our skin off lol hates to even be held put her in backwards doesn't see it coming & off we go!

Might i add we just bought a big carrier because the virus on now he has to go see the vet again 2nd visit they said he needs to go in a carrier so this will be fun! Ugg!

@@maureencoulson9466 - "just picks him up...put him in the truck." (long dramatic pause) Ahhh, sure. No matter how "big" the truck may be, not necessarily the best idea. Did that once with what we thought was a docile, mild-mannered, male feline, also a "big guy" and he actually WAS calm...until we hit the streets. He started to roam over to me, then back to wife when she gently called him, and then...WHAM, launched back at me in the vicinity of my upper legs and chest. Couldn't get this down-sized king of the urban jungle dislodged from my torso (immediately pulled to the side of the road and somehow got him into the cat carrier).
So, cat loose in truck? Never again. I'll err on the side of caution rather risking a major lawsuit by some moneygrubbing driver I might rear-end...or worse! Folks, do the same. No matter how docile or mild-mannered your cat may seem, err on the side of caution by using a carrier for these potentially "ferocious" beasts. They're about as predictable as their bros' in the wild.

I am really scared. my cat has a big lump near his throat and I believe it is a bee sting or, hopefully not, cancer.
I am scared because he is acting weird and scratches it. it's a clear sign that I need to take him to the vet.
but I've never taken him to the vet before. I am afraid that it will be hard to put him in the carrier, and if I will manage to get him in he will freak out and hurt himself. I know that I have to take him to the vet but I don't know how.
please, if you are reading this comment, tell me what I can do for my cat. I love him so much and I don't want to lose him.

You need to be brave, you can do it! I'm sure you're overthinking it, i felt the same way with my cat and it ended up being very easy. Just put on some long sleeves for your own peace of mind and be firm and quick! I noticed dropping her in was tricky because she was moving her back legs to block me from putting her in lol.. head first like the last method is best. No towel, though. If you are scared he will freak out in there spray some feliway. Good luck!

Unfair! Not a true challenge being displayed gere.I have had cats before with calm personalities. They would comply. The cat I have not is a big challenge The cats you are working with are cats that do not like being out in the carrier, but they comply, therefore, this is not helpful to me. Show a truly feisty cat being put into the carrier. Thanks.

So you need to take your cat to the vet and know it doesn't like carriers. All these how tos saying put your carrier out for weeks so the cat is comfortable around it. My cat is sick and needs to go now not next month! lol
