Removing Aggressive Cats from Carriers

  • Aunt Stacey demonstrates how to safely remove a very aggressive cat from the carrier. Harley, a Domestic Longhair, is displaying hyper-aggressive behavior including hissing, lunging, and loud vocalization. By the end of the video she's accepting petting before she receives a full groom and Lion Clip. Compassionate, thoughtful handling is always the purrfect approach with cats. Cats Rule!!
**** Aunt Stacey is opposed to declawing. Please check out www.pawproject.org for more information about the importance of ending the cruel practice of declawing. ****

Maybe if she hadn't been declawed, she'd be less scared at the vet. The poor thing remembers this place as the place where they hurt her badly.

Thanks for your comment. Declawed cats are undoubtedly more fearful when in threatening situations. Although this cat was not declawed at this particular veterinary clinic, you are probably correct that she holds deeply rooted negative associations with being handled by strangers in this type of environment. I incorporate gentle handling and soothing music to try to help her feel less stressed.

Declawing a cat often makes a cat even more aggressive

Yes, it does. It also causes many other physical and behavioral issues. Cats need their claws.

      Yes. I agree.
I did see one exception on one channel. A young cat had been injured, and she could not retract her claws on one paw due to her injuries and partial paralysis on that one leg. Hence her claws were constantly getting caught on rugs.....causing her to thrash in her attempts to escape. This risked her ripping her claws out.
So he only remove the claws on that one paw so to help with her quality of life.
She was quite happy afterwards and the she no longer had constant “accidents” on carpeting and curtains.
There are always tiny exceptions to rules. He even showed footage of her getting caught. Pretty scary seeing her thrash like that. It’s was just that one paw, her other paw was fine, so she was happy.
In that case removal of the claws increase her quality of life and eliminated the risk of her ripping a claw out (ouchy😖).
The channel is called “Vet Ranch”.

There are many reasons one may choose to have their cat clipped. A coat short can be very beneficial for some, not all, cats. Cats suffering from hairballs, matted coat, allergies, excessive auto-grooming, and more may experience tremendous relief post-clipping.

Poor baby. I had my girl groomed once and they cut her bad. Even with sedation, she fought hard because she was a spirited girl...and had no front claws because I did the unthinkable. I thought I had to because I had slashes on my arms, legs and stomach. I would happily bear those again for my next fur babies, I didn't realize just how inhumane declawing is to them, even though I asked the vet to educate me. What a beauty this baby is, god bless people like you that know how and care!

Great job- I work at a feline only veterinarypractice and handle aggressive cats on a very regular basis for both grooming and veterinary visits- they can be a challenge but helping them to feel less threatened is a key ingredient to a successful visit!
And to the person saying she is promoting declawing because she is grooming a declawed cat... bug off! Is the cat just supposed to get horribly matted and live in pain because its owners chose to have it declawed?? Is a veterinary hospital supposed to turn away a critically ill cat because it has no claws for fear of promoting declawing? Perhaps the cat was a rescue and was already declawed... one of my cats came to me declawed and I get people shaming me all the time for it... apparently you believe I should have just left him in the woods where I found him to starve to death with no way to defend himself instead of having to deal with judgmental people like you who think you know it all. This person is advocating kind and gentle handling of cats who are scared- why turn it in to something ugly and judgmental??

paul thomas Your experience isn’t universal. I’ve known of cats who straight up stopped using the litter box after being declawed because of how sensitive it made their feet.
Declawing is the anatomical equivalent of you having your fingertips and toes amputated at the first knuckle, except you don’t walk on your fingers, you have other means of defense, and you aren’t born with a natural, genetically ingrained necessity to scratch. It’s a completely unnecessary operation that’s not intended for the animal’s benefit. There is a list of known risks involved with the procedure, like infections, back pain, inappropriate elimination, behavioral issues, long term nerve damage, ect.
We’re talking about basically mutilating your animal’s feet for *your* own benefit and the possible harm to them.

I have a five month old rescue kitty that was three months ferrel when I got her. She was starving/dehydrated in the Utah desert when I found here.
The vet's nurse had to come to get her out of my RV for her first booster shot because she kept clawing to get back inside and wouldn't let go. She's a daddy's girl at home but very afraid of other people ot going outside. She's due for her second shot but I've been procrastinating because of our first vet visit.
I think I will get a top load soft carrier and just have faith in the next visit involving the vet's experience because it will be a different vet because we travel the country together lol.

+edwards edwards Well, you guys can pat yourselves on the back all you want, but you have the wrong idea that letting cats outside to roam unsupervised is a good idea. My cat is NOT declawed, and she is also an indoor-only cat, kept safe from being run over by a car, attacked by other cats, dogs, and other animals, stolen by hoarders, and hurt or killed by people who get off on abusing animals in ways that make declawing look like nothing (being shot by guns/arrows, duct-taped or locked in carriers and thrown into rivers/lakes are some ways cats have been abused in my region in recent years). One local family has had TWO cats get shot with BB guns (the second one happened last summer, in the face no less), yet they STILL plan on allowing all 5 of their cats roam their neighborhood. What's that saying about not being able to fix stupid???
I hear if you want to adopt/buy a cat in the UK and state that you plan to keep it inside, you are turned down. There are ways to keep a cat happy, mentally stimulated and in good physical condition by replicating outdoor conditions in doors - plenty of playtime, cat trees, or shelves, and plenty of toys that are designed to get them to play-hunt.

My Tasmanian Devil is impossible to get to the vet. Yowls, hisses, bites, and claws. He is a sweetheart at the vet. Have tried all tricks to get him into the carrier at home. He will have to be trapped in a live trap for feral cats. He can't go his entire life without seeing the vet or getting a claw trim (can't cut them myself, even after 3 years of trying to train him to accept it). I have had many cats, but this one is truly impossible. They prescribed gabapentin. Doesn't faze him.

Actually, handling and working with a declawed cat puts the groomer at a much higher risk of being bitten. Cat bites are typically far more damaging than scratches. When cats feel so defenseless and vulnerable, they have a much harder time. It takes even more patience and love to earn their trust. I am completely opposed to declawing.

You were very patient and calm throughout which is excellent but the owners of that cat need to be educated. There are countless books, documentaries and articles out there so most people should know by now that declawing your cat will 100% make it prone to be aggressive as they feel extremely vulnerable and defenseless so they need to express this by screaming and hissing and biting. This is a major problem with pet owners who are ignorant on the devastating effects of declawing a cat. iI is an amputation that is very painful and debilitating with long term health consequences. I would hope that all animal health care practitioners and vets will discourage pet owners form declawing their animal friend. But most regrettably many folks are lured by the huge profits they make off of this inhumane practice.

The most aggressive domesticated (non-feral) cats I have ever experienced were all de-clawed. They must feel so much more vulnerable to attack without their natural defenses and go to the bite attack. I had one de-clawed cat many many years ago because I let a family member bully me into it. Never again. My one current cat has destroyed expensive furniture despite all the scratching posts and toys. That is the price of ownership sometimes and I'm okay with that. :-)

Declawing is illegal in many countries, no surprise why. In human terms, it's like having the last phalanxes of your fingers removed. Imagine that being done on your toes too. Here, now u feel the pain of your cat, completely unable to do anything with its paws properly. The owner of this cat deserves nothing but a serious punishment for putting the cat in such a state.

I'm not sure if her current guardians chose to declaw her or if she was already declawed when they adopted her. Many declawed cats end up in shelters and with rescue groups due to behavior issues directly resulting from declawing. I agree it's cruel and inhumane to declaw cats. I look forward to a time when it is outlawed worldwide. In America, it's routine practice for many veterinarians to recommend declawing along with spaying and neutering. Sadly, many cat guardians don't realize what's actually involved. It's despicable.

declawing a cat makes it more aggressive and vicious than a cat with all its claws! instead of batting a person with its paws as a warning (even with the claws extended, which is still less painful than a bite from the mouth), a declawed cat would lose all its warning mechanisms and automatically bite their threat. a declawed cat would also bite harder than a normal cat, too. declawing a cat is like cutting all your fingers off of your hand and leaving you defenseless with just your palms. try living life like that! declawing cats forces them to be indoor cats (which is unnatural to their nature) and leaves them unable to use the litterbox because the litter stings their declawed scars on their paws. declaw your cat and have problems with feces all over your house.

CrackedTroyster That sounds reasonable. Most animals put most of their pressure on the front part of their foot. Declawing forces cats to apply pressure on their heels, which is not made for that. That would affect the spine, too.

    • @AuntStaceysCats
      @AuntStaceysCats  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

There are many reasons one may choose to have their cat clipped. A coat short can be very beneficial for some, not all, cats. Cats suffering from hairballs, matted coat, allergies, excessive auto-grooming, and more may experience tremendous relief post-clipping.

Ok, I was going to like this video for your professional behaviour with this beautiful cat, until I saw the very last frames with pictures of the fur being completed shaved off from the cat! Why? Doesn't this cat feel bad now and uncomfortable? - just asking

Okay I understand the cat and why it is acting that way I used to have one that was the sweetest thing in the world with me but going to the vets or anything she was like the cat from Hell. But this cat's hair is not very long - why do her owners have her shaved and put her through all this?????

    • @AuntStaceysCats
      @AuntStaceysCats  9 ปีที่แล้ว

Great question. Thank you for asking. Harley, the cat featured in this video, suffers from hairballs. Although many cat guardians think this is normal behavior, it's actually indicative of a serious medical issue. By keeping her coat clipped every 3-4 months, she is much healthier and happier.

its called a lion cut, its so a long hair cat dont roast in the heat during the summer, but I still feel bad taking away the kittys dignaty like that like you give a defeated enemy a funny haircut tar and feather them and parade them down the street naked or something in the old days, like a cat is majestic with all its coat and you cut all of it off save for a puff on the tail feet and head and you shear away all its might in its hair like the story of sampson in the bible.

those owners are selfish and cruel for declawing that cat. I understand that sometimes shaving a cat is necessary, especially in desert climates, and with a black cat like harley her black fur would only trap heat
