Broken Hook Gear Repair - Singer 700 Series - Part 1 - Removing and Assessing

  • While I was recording the last video, the Singer 760 I was using stopped sewing all of a sudden.
    What I thought was a thread jam was actually a broken hook gear.
    I remove the hook and we get a good look at the broken gear and how it is attached to the hook.
    At first I thought I would just use another hook from a spare 760 that's got a broken cam stack gear, but I have plans for that machine. The hook gear is not available at the moment because of Covid-19 lock-down so I thought it would be a good idea to try and fix it.
    All the pieces of the gear are accounted for so I have a go at piecing it together and using epoxy glue to repair it.
    It looks like most of the gears are still available for these models.
    One place you can find these parts is here - www.vintagesin...
    The 700 series Singers are precision made in Germany and are beautiful and very functional, not to mention easy to use.

    I recently bought my wife a singer 774 model at an auction. When I got home the needle was positioned to the far right yet the needle position dial indicates Center. Unfortunately the needle isn’t bent. Is the needle centering adjustment difficult? It uses a vibrating mechanism arm that I was looking at to see any obvious screws but didn’t see any obvious adjustments. Thanks for your videos they are a help.

    I replaced mine with one I got from ebay (the store is called evernice). As others have said it's a press/interference fit so you need to cut the old metal collar off. I did this with a dremel, making multiple cuts. To fit the new one I put the hook in the freezer overnight and when I was ready put the new gear in some hot water for a few minutes. I pressed them together in a vise. You have to be really careful not to bend the hook, I used a small piece of wood to make sure I was applying force to the base and not the rim of the hook, and a small socket to make sure I was applying force to the metal part of the new gear.

    Great video. Do you have a video showing how to replace/repair the nylon gear in the Bernette 334D? This gear on mine has split and probably can be epoxied but I'm not sure how that gear drives the other parts. Service manual or parts assembly diagram would be good, but i guess this kind of stuff does not exist. Any advice/help appreciated. I can upload a video of the mechanism if that would help with you giving advice.

      Thanks and if the screws are very tight you may need a screw driver that's a very good fit, of high quality and a long handle helps. Don't push too hard down on the screws unless you support the feed dog from underneath.

    Excellent video, many thanks! We have acquired a 720 with exactly the same issue, but we can’t get the nut at the bottom of the shaft of the Bobbin winding disc undone (3:09). It seems to rotate freely in either direction, so I’m guessing the thread is stripped. It looks like the only way to remove it is destructive, by cutting the nut off with a Dremel, unless there are other options that people can suggest.
    I can source the hook assembly easily to fix the gear issue, but the bobbin winding disc is another matter - do you know if there are replacements, or if they are known by any other names or part numbers? My Google-fu is letting me down at the moment (although it did bring me here so not all bad!)

    Good morning! I pretty sure that your machine with the broken cam stack will straight stitch my 758 doesn't have a cam stack it has no built in stitches every other stitch comes from the fashion discs like zig zag that came with the machine so I'm thinking that the discs will still work as well, the cam stack represents the built in stitches

    Hello, thank you for this very detailed video. I have a 706 model, and everything goes fine until 4m25 when you can remove the main piece while it's stuck on my sewing machine. I tried to push from under, and pull from above with a small tool, it moves a little, but there is something blocking this piece from being totally removed like yours on the video. I don't understand, or can't see what to remove so that it would unlock this mecanism.
    PS : the other piece you unscrew at 4m50 is stuck too, I put some special oil in hope to unjam (?) this particular screw. Any advice about that ?

    Why in the world would Singer or any other sewing machine company put PLASTIC type material in such crucial parts as gears? Planned obsolescence? My mom had a Touch and Sew machine and HATED that thing. She called it Touch and Tear Up. She wished she had NEVER traded in her old black all metal Singer.

    • @InStitches
      @InStitches  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems it was common for companies to put plastic gears into high quality machines of this era. I often wonder if was a way to quieten the machines down? I guess you could say it's planned obsolescence but I have 700 series machines that are still going strong and they're 50+ years old.

    • @jameswatkins8150
      @jameswatkins8150 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plastic in some cases is preferential to metal. It reduces environmental noise (on the ears) and vibration on the machine by damping vibrations so it makes much finer stitching possible. High quality plastic will beat low quality metal gears over time. Plastic is also semi-self lubricating, so it makes for a much more professional and high end product for this application. Designed very well, not for obsolesence - as can be seen by the fact they are still in use today not in landfill!

      To elaborate, I can see you shared a link to Central Michigan above (I believe the part is #153021G ?) and I can find them on eBay (cheaper!) but none seem to have teeth to grip the hook? I see teeth at the base of the shaft / on the hook when you remove the gear (7.28). Surely the new gear needs something to grip to that?

    • @MitchellPlatt
      @MitchellPlatt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As per you recommendation in the description, I explored Central Michigan Sewing Supplies, however, the only hook gears I can see on there don't have teeth to grip the hook i.e. there are just teeth for the gear side. Will that work? www.vintagesingerparts.com/collections/singer-touch-n-sew-700-series/products/singer-hook-gear-part-153021g-fits-models-700-702-706-708-720-722-726-740-760
