Correcting a Mistake I Made When Assembling the Hook Components - Singer 700 Series

  • When assembling the hook components in the Singer 760, I accidentally installed the collar on the lower side of the hook shaft upside down.
    It wasn't causing any issues but the clearance between it and the adjacent gear is minimal.
    I correct that problem in this video.
    Why am I doing so many videos on the Singer 700 series machines? Well we can blame Covid-19 as we're in a high level lock down at this point in time and I'm not able to get to my storage facility to pick up other machines. I just happen to have a bunch of 700 series machines on hand.
    Hang in there - I'll be doing videos on other makes, models and subjects in the near future.
    Are the plastic gears a way of building in planned obsolecsence? I don't think that is the main driving factor for putting plastic gears in these machines. The 700 series machines are of high quality German manufacture and I think that maybe the gears are a way of quietening the machines down.
    Singer supply a lot of the parts, even today and I think that's pretty good considering the attitudes of some companies these days.
    The 700 series Singers are precision made in Germany and are beautiful and very functional, not to mention easy to use.
    I can supply parts for these machines and you can find me at - www.institches.co.nz

    This is a very well done series on the 700 series, I have always put off collecting this series as I thought they were junk, I can now see how well made they are and are mostly repairable with some creativity involved. Also a big thank you for showing a correction in assembly that is so helpful and most would not go to the work of showing this.

    Thanks so much for sharing/helping about with these 700 series videos. Many don't think these are good machines because of the nylon gears. We thought nylon would last forever if out of light. Well wrong. All of the manufacturing went to the plastics. These are great machines in my collection. Also you can pick them up for cheap. I like all of your tutorials. Thanks again

      The main cause of the failure of the nylon gears in sewing machines is petroleum-based lubricants being used on the gears. Nylon is self-lubricating.

    Love these machines - this was my original machine and i wore it out -2 sets of feed dogs and when the 1st gear broke they wouldn't fix it for me. I have tried other new machines but i still long to have the touch and sew and will pick them up on yard sales and sew on them till they die - if i can fix one it will be a dream come true!

    Thank you for these videos.
    I have a similar machine- a Graduate 6705.
    I've had it, 30+ yrs, since I was in grade school, and it was used when I got it.
    My husband dropped it several months ago, from about 4 ft in the air. Still, I used it during lockdown to make 100+ masks and it worked fine. It made a knocking sound, but I had no problems with any of the sewing, at all. It worked great, despite the fall.
    A few months later, I decided to clean the machine and to figure out where the knocking noise was coming from. I began to clean the bobbin area, and my husband got involved. He decided to finish the clean up while I went to work. I told him not to do it, bcuz I know he doesn't know anything about sewing machines and had a feeling he'd not consult online videos. When I returned home, I was told that the machine was out of commission and he needed to buy me knew gears and ordered them on eBay. I found disintegrated pieces on the table, of the gears beneath the bobbin case. Week later, he got some gears, which appeared to not fit quite the same way, but he insists it's fine. I went ahead and tried a few stitches, and the tension was off. As I looked at the machine, I saw that the tension spring wasn't bouncing back. So he took the top apart. Found a crack in a tiny plastic part in the assembly. I called Singer and they told me the part is obsolete. So I ordered a similar part from the other 700 series. Entirely new tension assembly, took 2 wks to arrive. And he installed it yesterday.
    I sewed stitches with different tension settings and stitch length, but still, the top thread is looping loosely on the underside of the fabric while the bobbin thread is not looping up into the top fabric, and is easily pulled out. It's basically straight, while the top thread loops loosely around it. The top stitch looks ok. Do I need to adjust the bobbin screw settings?
    Where else can I check to remedy this before more parts need to be replaced? ...lol.
    I have the tension at 5. Using basic cotton fabric. Cotton thread.

    Thank you very much. Actually we'd been very lucky to find this video cause the same hook gear was broken here!
    Covid19 lockdown and the need to make our own masks made us tackle some old items at home and one of them was the Singer 700 of my mother in law.
    I'll see if I could find a replacement.
    Cheers from Iran! :)

    Thank you for these amazing videos. I have a 720 and have replaced the hook gear, and the tension spring following your wonderful demonstrations ... I have reset the timing etc but although it is now sewing it is still slightly loopy underneath . Can you help me with what to try next

    • @InStitches

      Looping underneath is quite often loose top tension. Take a look at this - th-cam.com/video/YUITDO2_9sk/w-d-xo.html Thanks.

    Hi I have a bernina 1130 and the hook timing is off. The bobbin thread doesnt want to come up. Could you please do a tutorial on how to correctly position the race hook? If you have one available now during lockdown .

      @InStitches  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you positive the timing is out? Have you installed a brand new needle? I don't have a video on setting the timing for an 1130 at this time.

    First of all I would like to tell you l enjoy your videos, because you thoroughly explain everything in a manner that is understandable. Very helpful. Thank you.
    Is it possible for you to explain how to replace a bobbin winder actuating lever with the bobbin winder cam on Singer model 758? I ordered both online and I tried to install but they don't stay together. I'm thinking a little screw might hold them together in place, but a screw did not come with it. Any help will be appreciated. Maybe the screws should be ordered separately?

      Thanks. From memory, I show the bobbin winder cam removal and installation in the video prior to this one. Maybe the one after as well.

    Hi In Stitches!
    I have a Singer 758 and am a beginner to sewing and to sewing machines. I have noticed that the needle keeps breaking. The issue just started. I believe it is hitting the bottom where the bobbin is. Can you please point me in the proper direction to fix it? Your help is greatly appreciated!!

    • @InStitches
      @InStitches  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some things to consider if you haven't already done so... Test sew on two layers of fabric such as an old sheet or something. Make sure the needle is installed the correct way around and make sure it is right up in the hole. Also make sure you let the machine feed the fabric, don't pull the fabric through. This video sheds some light on how to check the timing and needle bar height. - th-cam.com/video/yMAl176fP-E/w-d-xo.html
