As babies both my kids used walkers neither had any injuries, both walked on their own by 10 months of age. All surfaces in my home are the same level so there was no danger of falls on different levels, plus they both loved following me around independently. Both were excellent at sports when they went to school with my daughter being the top female sports girl in running right thru primary school, so for us the walker was great ! 🤷♀
Ever since i was young and saw my baby sister use the walker i hated it from the get go, I not only felt bad that a child should be restricted like that (seemed uncomfortable in general) but i also saw her toes get caught under the edges and she would often get injured as one room would be tiled, or have different flooring and the transitions would cause injury, toys, etc , I always knew I'd never get one for my own kids if i had any... And When I did end up having kids, i just created a yes space in the lounge and in their rooms where nothing is dangerous and theres lots of floor play! (means one may have to sacrifice style for abit) but it's definately worth it so they can do all sorts of moving, running and play and still be very safe god willing and it turned out not only did they develop well thank god but they also were done justice as much as possible by feeling free :) Thankyou for your wonderful and insightful videos, I didn't know of the stats but it really does all make sense!
i use mine for five minutes while doing the washing up so she can't get into the cupboards or reach the shelves. (it's in the laundry room) it's safe for us because she is in the same room as me the door is closed and that GIANT RING around the bottom stops her from getting into things. I do not use it anywhere else and I do not use it in the hopes for her to walk, we do all of that in the living room where she is happily cruising around on all the furniture.
I also use mine for very short periods of time and I always watch him because I'm paranoid. I close all the doors. But this video gave me food for thought.
In Europe these "walk enhancers" are not really used, people generally know they are not good for babies (babies need to move freely to develop properly).
Thank you so much for sharing. I really appreciate the information. I am recently being pressured by family members who already have kids to get my 7 month old a walker which I have clearly made them clear that I prefer otherwise. However, if I am nit supposed to use walkers and bouncers how else could I motivate my baby to stand and learn walking. Me and my husband are going old school by having her stand up on our lap and having her just kind of walk around the house and also by modeling how we mover our feet. But could these activities be enough? Would you have any other activities recommended? Thank you once again.
Hi @Being Family sounds like it is a bit stressful for you and your husband. You're right, baby walkers and standing play stations (bouncers) are not needed to teach a baby to stand and walk. Babies are very curious individuals and as their muscles get stronger they will move from crawling, to pulling themselves into standing, standing without support, cruising along furniture and then walking without support. is your little one crawling? If she isn't crawling yet then I would continue with tummy time activities, playing when lying on her back and practicing sitting. I have a video coming out in 2 weeks on how to help your baby learn to crawl. Before walking, you want to want to work on the skill of standing and then shifting her weight in standing (through reaching for toys to the side and then cruising). Does this make sense?
@@EmmaHubbard I can't wait for the video about teaching your baby to crawl. As a first time mom, people try to suggest things I should do for my baby and sometimes I find it a bit annoying because every baby is different. Your videos are helping me a great deal and I can't thank you enough.
@@EmmaHubbard it makes sense so much. Thank you. This is so so so helpful. My baby is not crawling yet but she is rolling over back and forth and she wiggles herself off when I put her in her tummy on the boppy pillow. She wiggles down from the pillow and it seems like she is trying to use her feet to crawl around. She still hasn’t build up her muscles to be on all four just yet. But I will keep trying the tummy time and motivate her to play on her back as you have suggested. Thank you once again 🙏🏻
I got my baby walker today and I just came across this video now. I feel really bad, I wish I had done some research before buying. I’ll return it to the store I just hope they allow a swap
Thank you very much for the information. Standing in front of them at walmart and thinking which one should I buy. Then I watched your video and of course I didn't choose any of them.😂
Baby will learn to stand and walk themselves when they're ready, if they're not restricted from being able to move (by a container such as a walker or bumbo seat)
Hi Amanda, motionless activity stations are better than walkers (not as dangerous). However, if they are activity stations where the baby stands up then babies usually are unable to touch the floor unless they are on tippy toes (which tightens the calf muscle-not good for standing or walking). They do not work on developing a baby’s standing skills as the baby is in a slung seat and therefore not using their tummy muscles or any trunk muscles to stand up. Also the baby’s arms tend to be raised up to the shoulders which doesn’t promote good hand use.
At what age babies should be encouraged to stand/walk. My son before even 6 months of age tries really hard to Stand in my lap or like to jump, so we are looking for a way to encourage him to stand on something more firm as he tends to jump alot in my lap.. is that good? What should be done in that case.. we are using a walker for really short period of time, but I'm still skeptical about it.. so really need your input on that.
I see you had no reply to this but it seems to me you are very in tune and prepared for your little one to start walking. I think every parent who tries and keeps their eyes open and doesn't neglect their child will do just fine no matter what method they use for any kind of development. Good luck 👍 xx
Hi I would just like to clarify, since baby walkers are a safe hazard for babies. How about what they call harness walkers (the harness that an adult holds up while the baby is strapped below on their arms while walking)? Would it be considered safe or would they develop bad habits like toe walking? My baby is almost 9 months. Thank you
If she is at the age when she can sit then placing a container full of toys can keep them entertained for ages. Or in the kitchen you can have a draw which she can empty - like a Tupperware draw.
@@EmmaHubbard I just love all your stuff here especially with the types of tummy time you taught us. My baby used to hate tummy time until I watched your videos. She loves it now😀😀😀
Thanks so much Emma, I didn’t understand why these would not be good for our baby so it was great to have you explain it so well. Great channel, have subscribed 😀
They are walking aids not baby sitters, just don't leave them in them for to long, both of my children used them and they are just fine, ones 33 and ones 30 👍
My 6mo loves being pushed in it and it makes sounds thats all i use it for a bit of play. My parents used to feed me in it when i started solids for a few months so i had one too and i turned out fine. Just dont leave them in it i think.Btw in saw Paris hilton has her baby in it all the time to walk on her tik toks.🤷♀️
Baby push walkers are great. I actually have a video on the different push walkers and what to think about when choosing one. You might find it helpful.
This is so dramatic.. my first child had a walker and didn't develop any issues and picked up walking really quickly.. my 2nd baby has one of those standing push ones and it's such a pain because it just rolls away but she'll sit and play with the detachable front thing
They are not safe…. My 9mos granddaughters just flipped out of hers this weekend. She was reaching for something on the table and flipped. We will never use it again
What about those bouncer things you can hang from the door frame? I used one with my first, only very little, but I have a second and am now wondering if it is ok? My first developed well and I am not trying to have my second deveolop faster. Just wondering if it makes any difference.
My daughter just turned 1 and has been able to stand unassisted since she was 10 months old and cruises along the furniture and things easily but still won't take her first step. I know I shouldn't compare but other babies her age go from standing 1 week to walking the next and I'm starting to think that something is stopping her. She does crawl with her right leg pushed backwards so she can go faster and I don't if it's normal that her big toes seem to always be pulled back.
My baby is already 1 year and almost 3 months old but still not able to stand on her own and still not able to walk I've been using a walker for a long time but she's still not able to stand nor walk on her own

My sister in law her baby lives in a baby walker😩 I've told everyone that my baby isn't allowed near one. She plays happily on the floor😂
How about VTech Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker? Which requires baby to stand and push it instead of sitting inside.

My dad (in 1964) fell down the stairs in a baby walker and broke his collar bone! Scary to think about
Very scary!
Why haven’t they been banned yet???
@jasM not sure. It would be significantly less confusing for parents if they were.
