The repetition of damage, the drilling home of the dehumanization, can only be experienced to be fully understood. I literally would chose breaking rocks on the side of the road in india and living in a thatched shack.
There’s something incredibly anti human about many of these food and service jobs that absolutely jades you! I feel that for sure. Yeah We all get jaded to some extent as we go through hard stuff. But the emotional and psychological toll specific to the reduction of human experience to sheer transaction and life force extraction really steals hope and trust in reality, and annihilates the ability to save yourself.
Ive been assaulted, ive been gravely injured, ive seen a lot of death. For some still elusive reason, these devastating life experiences pale in comparison to the death of soul and spirit that a lot of these places pay you $14 an hour to experience.
Again, i joke about my time working those jobs. But i absolutely understand why people snap and want to die working in these places, which aint no joke.

We're pretty much at the point this inflation raff combined with the meme economy are gonna cause some real hurt. Seriously who thinks 290 dollars a week is livable? And everyone can't move up lol, there need to be people in those lower positions.
In the end, the low wages end up hurting the corporations more than it would help to pay the peons twice as much. Back when I was a cashier for Jewel I would actively sabotage the company because I had so much disdain that two weeks of work out of the month just about covered the insurance and gas for the car I only needed to get to work in the first place. I purposely ruined product, did a half ass job, openly told the managers I refused to do certain things because if they fired me I could just go down the street and get another job that day that paid the same without question. I've been working as a carhop at Sonic for a while now on and off. At the end of the day it's a VERY accessible job. You saw how eager that guy was to get Tim through the door by how nice and welcoming he was (even though it sucks that's not the norm).
I get paid 6 an hour because of all my experience with Sonic.
About 30 percent of my customers tip me. Just enough to get a little bit above the federal requirement of what I have to make. No one believes we need that money to meet a legal standard.
I've had money thrown on the ground in front of me (a single dollar not that it matters) so that I could be watched picking it up. Irrelevant, but eye opening to me.
I work here because I smoke marijuana. Everyone knows this there and they're okay with it. I smoke cannabis to cope with anxiety and depression since I have no health insurance. I'm trying to cut back since it's so expensive.
Food industry jobs are the only avenue (or so it seems) for people that might need to pass a drug test in illegal cannabis states.
I've accepted my lack of money In exchange for a lack of mental and emotional pain.
