Mexico's OBSESSION With Foreign Influencers (Who WORSHIP Mexico)

  • Mexico has an OBSESSION with foreign influencers making positive videos about Mexico. It's strange because people from the UK (where I'm from) and the US don't care about foreigners reacting to their culture. But why are many Mexicans (not all) big fans of these foreign influencers? Believe it or not... Some answers to this question are traced back to the Spanish invasion and colonization of Mexico.

And Tio Paul appears again... Just like that! I hope you enjoy the video. Please give the video a thumbs up! (It helps the video reach more people). And what are your thoughts? I love reading the comments. And it's one way I continue to learn more about Mexico. Also, can anyone translate this into Spanish? Please reach out to me if you can. Would be great for Mexicans who don't understand English to see this video.

02:19 Yeah, that's deep-rooted "Malinchismo" to you. It is also the reason you see so many fair-skinned people in Mexican ads. But I like it when some creators like yourself and Cocinando Corea do it with authentic interest and respect. Good to have you back on board on TH-cam.

During centuries of Spanish rule in Mexico the indigenous and later the mestizo were made to believe that the white Caucasian was superior and if they did not accept it, they were violently submitted. In the independent era it was still undeniable that the whites had advantages over the browns and well into the twentieth century that was so palpable that television used Anglo-Saxon looking models as a symbol of prosperity and triumph.
So many centuries of submission made the Mexican still unconsciously need the approval of the foreign master.

If it’s a genuine feeling then it’s ok but I think a lot of TH-camrs see Mexico as a target to increase their followers/money. You just give it to us straight with a perfect balance of info and humour. Don't ever change. You are number one. I think the trend is similar to vloggers who react to songs they claim never to have heard before and fake-react. Bohemian Rhapsody is a popular choice for them. It's amazing how many of them had never heard the song before. I call BS.

Glad someone finally brought this topic up. I see this with the Kinetic Kennons, their fan base was majority Mexicans because of this reason. Now that they’ve moved to Europe, their views have dropped significantly. They just recently picked up again with the Mexico World Cup games. I see the same thing happen with other TH-camrs, they start out as travel vlogs, but end up staying in Mexico because the algorithms and views tend to favor them here more than other countries

I thought I was the only one who noticed that! In a way I feel bad for them because they genuinely seem like great, well-meaning people who weren’t trying to take advantage of Mexico/Mexicans but because of the way things are were given a big viewership boost while living and vlogging in Mexico. In all honesty I also stopped watching when they left for Europe but not because I felt they betrayed Mexico or anything negative like that. I just wasn’t as interested in videos about Poland. I guess this video made me realize that I fed into the same foreign influencer problem unfortunately.

I agree somewhat. When I lived in Mexico with my wife and children, we grew our channel by tens of thousands very quickly. We genuinely love Mexico! However, as local residents (my kids went to public school and I worked in a Mexican company) we had our lived experiences that informed us on how we wanted to improve our community also. In other words, just like in my country of the U.S. it wasn't all sunshine and butterflies. When I made videos noting this, these videos received waaaaayyyy less exposure and views than the ones where we talked of our love for our segunda patria.

I also love consuming videos that show Mexico positively, so I am not sure it's entirely a Mexican phenomenon (but sure, probably a high amount hehe). For me personally, it's excitement that this place just south is so amazing and not the way that our politicians and the "if it bleeds it leads" media have portrayed it. You're exactly right, Tio Paul, I had been to Mexico a few times in the very early 2000's and thought it was such an incredible place, but since most info I had heard after that was almost entirely about cartel violence, I wrote it off as a place to stay away from... until the explosion of positive TH-cam coverage of people actually going around and showing how safe and amazing it really is (in most places). Great video!!!

I was thinking: “here’s another video of a foreigner telling us how much he likes Mexico”
& Right when I was about to comment about Mexicans complexes you nailed it. The fact that many foreigners now actually know about mexicans approval seeking society, they’re doing it just to get famous overly reacting to anything related to Mexico, that may fool some people but not all of us.
Mexicans love their culture and people that “approves” it many times they sell out culture too cheap.
Also there are many internet users in Mexico and the US compared to other developed countries with smaller population, so it’s very profitable to react to anything Mexican than other cultures.
And at the end of the day it’s not a foreigners influencers problem but Mexican society’s problem.
The reason why I follow you Paul it’s because you seem genuine and by not showing your face in your videos tells me you’re not looking to get recognition among Mexicans but to make us pay attention to your message, I really appreciate that.

As a Mexican born and raised, I feel you nail it down in your video. I personally love watching foreigners’ videos about Mexico and, if I'm very frank, is for two main reasons and one of those is definitely validation that Mexico is more than just 'bad press'. I moved back to Mexico after spending more than 15 years living in Canada. On paper, I’m both Mexican and Canadian and needed some kind of ‘reassurance’ that moving back to Mexico after all these years ‘in the 1st world’ was a correct decision since Canada’s reaction to Covid (measures, plans, restrictions, etc.) is against my own values and, I haven’t been disappointed. It is, precisely, through these TH-camrs (like you) that I’m confirming time and again that I took the right decision. The second reason is, I LOVE Mexico’s food (who wouldn’t?) And knowing more and more about my culture through the eyes of foreigners is truly eye-opening and inspiring, to say the least. So, thank you, thank you for portraying Mexico the way it really is, tio Paul. Mexico rocks!!!

Mine is probably the last one.
I'm Mexican American and living in the U.S all my life but wanting to see my culture.
I was always tired of hearing negative things from the news here and even from the news from Mexico. It's like I needed fresh eyes. Because even though I'm Mexican I'm still a foreigner to Mexico. I've visited family a hand full of times. So when I was looking for some foreign insight I found your channel.
You seem to have help me appreciate the beauty and culture way more than I had visiting on my own.
Through you I discovered other foreign channels on Mexico, total is five. But I'm not like an active follower. I give a thumbs up if I like what has been said and recorded. But that's the most patronage that I do. 🤷
It does feel good to hear someone else besides Mexicans enjoying Mexico. Especially when you have discriminative and racist remarks from Americans all your life. Not that it was frequent, but it was never an (white) American. That would say, I went to Mexico and it was amazing.
Last I understand and speak Spanish. My writing isn't so great and I'd give myself a C+ in Spanish. So watching a video in English helps with me understanding what is being said. I also watch channels of Mexican TH-camrs but I find myself being confused because of slang or them speaking faster than my brain can interpret.

Great to hear from you! I started watching your helpful videos - way back before our first visit to Mexico City in 2016 - to get an idea of what to expect. I also watched videos from some of those influencers who are obviously and nauseatingly pandering to the interest that Mexicans have in hearing what people say about them.
I had never heard of Malinchismo - that is a very interesting theory. But here is another one: Canadians are also very focused on what is said about them in the USA media. They make tons of USA tv shows and big budget films here in Vancouver - but the location is always disguised as an American city. When someone in the USA actually acknowledges Canada - especially if it is positive, people swoon ("OMG the Rock loves us!!"). So, perhaps it is a symptom of living next door to a cultural behemoth (or how about just loud mouth). We hear everything they say about us - and wonder why they never notice us. It is probably worse in Mexico - where instead of just ignoring - the US media is constantly focused on the negative. I can imagine that it must be refreshing to hear people from the US, UK, and other first world nations saying that they are "shocked" by how nice, safe, friendly, interesting, etc Mexico is.
Anyway, way to spot a trend Paul. Thought provoking as always - thank you!

I'm glad you didn't shy away from the inferiority complex that's present in the general psyche of our population. It's a sensible topic, but definitely worthy of discussion if we as a people are to overcome it.
I don't have a lot to add to the conversation, just to remark that this phenomenon is not exclusive to Mexicans. For example, TH-cam by its recommendations showed me a Spanish guy who was positively reviewing Ecuadorian stadiums, and those videos had 10x the engagement his other unrelated videos had. An economic factor is definitely at play here.
We humans, as social entities, always strive for acknowledgment and validation. But normally the source of that validation is closer to the person, like the validation of a father, mother, or our peers. We Mexicans and I dare say, some other Latin-American countries in general, are quite unique that we value disproportionately the opinions of foreign people of us, foreign white people mainly.
It really is a problem, because this kind of disproportion makes us open to manipulation. Like how our ads are all full of white foreign people, selling us anything they want: clothes, devices, a lifestyle... and most dangerously, ideas and ideologies. Media companies and marketing shops know this, and exploit it daily. We need to have this conversation in order to fight it and become immune.

This is interesting and I have had the same thoughts. Mainly, how genuine are these reactions? Some of these folks are so obnoxiously positive that it is almost nauseating. I love Mexico too, it is great, but sheesh, slow your roll guys. The worst are the couples that are copying other influencer couples to get views, and are obviously faking positivity to a certain degree. These same things happen in other Latin countries as well. In Brazil they also have malinchismo; they call it "complexo de vira-lata". It shows itself in very weird ways. Some Brazilians are ultra critical of Brazil to the point where they detest it, and when they see you like it, it validates them but they also get angry lol (I know, bizarre). I prefer the Mexican style of being proud and nationalistic about their country, and wanting to share. Colombian are also pretty big fans of watching foreginers speak well about them, but I think they are already getting tired of it. Most influencers in Colombia are men there for the wrong reasons, trying to copy another popular influencer (to a t), and fake positivity. I loved it at first, but it has become so played out and fake that there is something inherently wrong about it. It's like taking advantage of the locals in a weird way. Sounds negative as hell, but just my thoughts.

Hey man, don't stop making your videos... As a sociologist I can say not all the vloggers/foreigners that come and they do the "exact same reaction videos" about mexican culture do it with the best intentions. Like you said, many is just for the views. I have been studying this phenomena since 2018, now developing in a bigger social problem like gentrification. I can say that your videos make a huge thing differently from the rest, critique, questioning. Just like you said in a previous videos, not all mexicans like to be kicked out from their homes just because now they can pay the rent because the disparity of the money exchange is in favor to them and they so "promote" the "come, here is SO cheap" mentality among other foreigners as well.
The mexican culture is in my opinion well described in the book La Jaula de la Melancolía (The Cage of Melancholy) from Roger Bartra, where he says that mexican culture is a parallel from the Axolotl animal, but mostly, the telltale that gave birth to the myth. Many mexicans haven't gone out (the pound in the book) from the country, so they can't live outside of their own comfort zone (aka culture. Like the mexican that thought french people would like to buy micheladas with chile in France but they didn't). So, the culture (political, economical, social... everything) works like that cage/pound where the Axolotl can only exist, because like the animal itself, it didn't "transcend" to a different animal, neither fish, neither terrestrial animal... so, it's stuck in between.
Sorry for the long explanation, but it just happen that I like all those topics. So, anyway, the lack of knowledge about the outside world, the indirect contact that this culture has with others around the world it's not a direct contact, hence why mexicans tend to adapt what "they think" they are other cultures... and they adopt those mutated ideas of what many think is the world. All that created that mindset where the "approval" is the reaction that many need to keep perpetuating the place where the Axolotl lives (and their ideas of what they think other cultures are). It's not that they just seek approval (social psychology) but >what for< they look for that approval.

This video was very helpful. I didn't know this was a thing, but it makes so much sense now, regarding an experience I had with a guy from Mexico who honestly seemed like the loveliest dude but he was so insecure and craving validation, praise etc by seemingly everyone around him (he lives in the states) to a degree that was genuinely startling and saddening to observe. He always brought up his heritage and would be making jokes and I can see he was wanting approval and it was bizarre to me, esp because he is genuinely one of the most awesome humans I've ever met, and he doesn't seem to know it or understand why I'd think so.
(He really is, just so awesome naturally, he literally could just go around being himself and ppl would actually love him naturally... but sadly he was so consumed by caring so much what foreigners thought of his every move...)

They love to receive attention, presents, likes, views, and even requests for selfies like if they were some sort of celebrities… then they bring the dad, the mum, the gran dad, the sister, the brother, the girlfriend, the dog, the cat, etc, to do more reactions…😂😂😂 i can count with the finger tips of one hand the TH-camrs who are true lovers of Mexico.

Mexicans (we) do like approval from others. Even from our own country men and women.
I guess the inferiority complex is kind of real, I mean we don't feel less than foreigners, we actually want them to feel what WE FEEL about our own country. So, I guess this complex we have is more about wanting to be understood, meaning, why we are passionate about certain things (Food and partying being top of the list) why we like or dislike certain things, why we are angry or sad about certain situations. Not because we feel inferior, but because we want to befriend others.

As a mexican I would say that (sadly) the reason of this phenomenon to happen here in mexico is because (in general) most mexicans feel in a subconscious level, not enough, not capable or not at par with most foreigners, specially white foreigners, so having a positive feedback from people they praise, makes mexicans feel worth more...
In other wordswords, they want to hear good things from "better" countries to forget for a while all the subjectively bad aspects mexicans have as a race.

Its not about feeling a complex of inferioruty or Malinchismo, Malinchismo ia that you prefer the foreign country over the mexican culture. I'm Mexican-American and undertanding both culturesI now realize how wonderful life in general is far greater and prosperous as a Mexican. Mexico is a rich country im al aspects (diferent styles of music, endless types of food, art, dance styles, creativity (chicanadas), history, traditions, weather , flora, wildlife, mega diverse regions desert, amazing beaches, jungle, montains and even snowy regions. For example I live in one in the hotest cities in the world Mexicali, but only a few kilometers away it snows in winter. Mexico im many ways is megadiverse each regions, each state even every city has its own personal identity, we are all nexicans but with our peculiar differences depending in what city you live and your sourrounding environment. Its hard for foreigners to understand Mexicans because you come from a very different way of life and values. I think in the contrary, its not a complex of inferiority, but a great sence of pride, we love our country with its ups and downs, our flag, our people,.our way of life and most importantly our familes. Who wouldnt be happy with everything we have. We are blessed as Mexicans to have al we have and of course, we love people to come and fall in love with our country as we love it ourselves. We are a culture that welcomes people and likes to share the beaitiful things we have, "mi casa es tu casa" only a true mexican understands. We are like litlle children that likes to share their toys, is their that something wrong with that? We know all our richness and we are proud of it. We are happy to hear when our brothers and sisters from other countries discover what we have and even change their perspectve in life and about what "Mexico" really is and not what international media portrays on Mexico. Its like having a beautiful home, of course who doesnt like to receive compliments on how we live. Our great home is Mexico. Proud to be Mexican, los mexicanos somos chingones, wouldn't have it other way. Lucky to have been born in this great country. VIVA MEXICO cabrones!!!!

When I watch a video about foreigners liking México is just because I want to show someone who doesn't speak Spanish; something about the country. I haven't found a single Mexican showing our country in English (so more people understand). If I watch the video is cause I want to make sure it is something as interesting as any other videos I've seen about Taiwan or Japan or Korea. Either that or I'm curious why they say this or that (like some video I watched about why ex pats go back to America). As for Chinguamiga (who happens to speak Spanish), she is very funny. Thank you for such a nice video, Tío Paul! It's true, I feel good seeing these kind of videos but I also can feel many are not so honest? Many look like just trying to get lots of $$$$. To be honest I get annoyed at these type of influence videos making headlines! Those are not news??? Sigh.

I have noticed this inferiority complex the most in southern Mexico, northern Mexicans tend to be more nationalistic and only want to marry between their own and don’t care to have friends from other nationalities, neither do they care if you are European, American or whatever.

No i don't think I need validation. It's just interesting to see people see things with new eyes that are considered normal to me.

It is nice to see all the positivity, but the truth is it gets to be too much sometimes. When all your videos are "oh this is so great", it becomes disingenuous, even the most nationalistic Mexican knows not everything is great. That also said there is a ton of sensationalism regarding Mexico, so I like blowing up the stereotypes. It is also not a unically Mexican thing, Japan is another country that likes watching videos of foreigners visiting their country. We went to Mt Fuji and I was livestreaming and the local television crew was sent out to film us. My son became like a local celebrity because he told the reporter he liked salmon fish. Anyhow, if it is genuine great, Mexico is naturally beautiful, but you can tell after awhile people are hamming it up.

Well, TBH I've always enjoyed the portrayal EXACTLY because of your last point, the overwhelming representation of Mexico in a bad light thanks to USA news and other media feels unfair sometimes and seeing actual foreigners enjoying our country gives me at least a sense of vindication... I'm not saying we're perfect, I'm not saying we don't have problems, but if the only look you have of Mexico is the American media, you have a very VERY skewered view of Mexico, and sadly it's the only view most other countries HAVE of our country.

I knew this existed but didn’t know there was a name for it. I recently noticed this with wealthy white Mexicans (who I assumed had lots of self-esteem, lol). On Netflix’s “Made in Mexico,” they would unnecessarily drop a lot of English words when speaking to other Mexicans. It came across as trying too hard. Even other Mexicans commented on this on social media.
    Thanks for discussing.

Oh I got another insight about this. After watching your video I was about to click on yet another reaction video from a vocal coach/composer/musician commenting a heavy metal song. I like those videos, many metalheads from many countries like that validation saying that their music is smart and well made.
I realized that, as a Mexican who loves Heavy Metal, I feel the same way about reactions to music I like and foreigners reacting to my culture/places/food/nature, etc.

this reminds me the South Korea's 'Netflix effect', I see a lot of young girls obsessed with South Korea's tv shows and music bands that they overreact to anything related to Korea, even when is something they don't follow, e.g. see the comment section of any football video about the Korean team, and I think a lot of people had this experience when a Korean guy came to our school and a lot of girls where fascinated with him, I mean that's fine but it's (your fav word here) to see someone acting like that even without knowing a person (in the other side unfortunately nowadays we have to say 'not everyone' because some people get offended, seems that they really really need to hear they are not included/affected)

As a Mexican myself, I wouldn't say we're obsessed by foreigners, we're just happy to know these "influencers" are getting rid of the stereotypes movies gave us throughout decades. Mexican people are very proud of their culture and if someone likes it, we're happy about it. But if people out there think this obsession is going to last forever, that's a lie, foreigners have been invading our own spaces, therefore rent prices have increased enormously and it's a current problem we're facing today, everyone's realizing now the problem of gentrification, so this idealization about foreigners in our country might be changing in a few more years. Let's see what happens.

Finally a TH-camr who is speaking the truth about the inferiority complex Mexico has and that’s why foreign TH-camrs do well in Mexico. They are just taking advantage of this. Thank you for speaking the truth!

We mexicans support foreign influencers who praise our country because they make good mexico marketing material, their work attracts others foreigners and tourism, we know that just like the US does.. selling your culture is beneficial in some many ways. If foreigners make Mexico look like an amusement park we will support them, if they make Mexico look bad or dangerous we will not support them, it is that easy, even if we know some of the things they show from Mexico are true and bad we don't like that they come here and expose those bad things to the world, supporting those people is our way to thank them for their service. If a TH-camr creates videos about Mexico we will watch them and like them but they move to a different country and forget about making Mexico content then we will stop supporting and continue supporting others who still do it, that's our strategy to get free publicity and it works! We love to see content creators tell their audience good stuff about Mexico (our government does not pay anyone for coming here and talk good about us, they do it by themselves) because that is the master plan, to make Mexico look like an amazing country, living in America thing, land of freedom and opportunities and bla bla bla. Nothing personal but a lot of people in other countries would do the same for their countries.

I like to watch videos about Mexico, I do not do it out of any inferiority issue but because it helps me see my own country and culture through the eyes of different cultures. So I can see my own culture from a different perspective. Not everything in Mexico is bad as we many mexicans like to think.... and obviously not all in Mexico is perfect. I find more interesting the videos of foreign people actually LIVING in Mexico. They provide really interesting information and entertaining content like cultural shocks, challenges, etc. It is also easy to spot videos of people that only "react" positively to Mexico... that content I am not really interested in

Yeah and videos like these are promoting more gringos to move to Mexico, Mexicans aren't really liking that. There's a cultural shift and now you hear more english than you do Spanish. A lot of areas in Mexico are being gentrified and americanized.
