This is true, I live in the US but I'm from Mexico and is really common to have this feeling. I never talk about money in front of my family, because it is really hard to understand the differences in living costs and some people can feel that Mexico is poor but is not truth.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@CrimsonKing666 hey man currency exchange doesnt lie. fuck you and everyone else for creating this system in the first place tbh. 🤧 people can talk their politics all day long its all smoke and mirrors. As a mexican american living a comfortable and wealthy lifestyle i can say with the utmost confidence. Numbers dont lie. Fiscal policy doesnt lie. Currency exchange policies have made it so some countries are rich and some are poor on purpose, for utility and trade.

Most of the people that have never been to Mexico are very ignorant about Mexico.... I live in Portugal and the other day I saw a Portuguese woman saying that Mexico was a poor country in all aspects including in its cinema industry and telenovelas.... and that really annoyed me.... specially people from a country (portugal) that is not that rich... and knowing that many things in Mexico are developed... one main thing to blame is the American movies and series: always portraying Mexico as a poor and dangerous country... and portraying Mexicans most of the time as criminals and bad people... just another American show was released called "coyote"... guess what it is all about? Mexico must start show itself throughout the world as a developed and rich country

I'm glad that you're back tío Paul. I agree completely with what you mentioned about foreigners talking about how "cheap" is to live in Mexico.
Recently there has been a lot of videos from US citizens who move to Mexico (usually to Merida) and comment about how cheap it is to live there. The problem is that, with them moving in, a 2nd wave of gentrification has begun.
Eventually, some local people from Merida will have to move out because products will increase prices and housing as well.
I have nothing against foreigners moving in, is just that unfortunately this is the way the economy works here and the people who pay for this are the locals.

Hello uncle Paul!! As far as I can see, many foreigners forget that despite some issues like those related to drugs Mexico is now ranking #15 among the 20 richiest economies in the world and it is getting stronger and getting closer rapidly to the top ten every single year (with no pandemic of course).
Sadly, many think that comming to Mexico is like taking a trip back in time to the old sleepy and dusty towns lost in the middle of the desert but I am pretty sure some of them would be really shocked to see the large amount of skyscrapers and other large and amazing buldings under construction in all main cities of this exotic and somehow surrealist but happy country.

An observation from my point of view, as someone from the US.
One thing people often don't think about (including most people from the US) is that the US is very young, relatively speaking. The historical buildings in Mexico are way older than our country, and many of the "not-super-old-but-not-quite-modern" buildings (which are still perfectly functional!) are just as old as the oldest buildings in the US. This kind of skews the opinion of how modern things really are in Mexico, I think.
Another thing is that it is protrayed that way in movies, etc. And I think there probably are some of those "old sleepy and dusty towns lost in the middle of the desert", but those also exist in the US, and probably just about anywhere with enough open space... You rarely, if ever, see a movie where it is set in an area of Mexico City with skyscrapers, etc. Since many people from the US don't travel much (>50% of people in the US don't have a valid passport...), their impression of other places is only what they see in movies.

    My man Paul!
Good to see you posting again, and hearing your charismatic voice and positive attitude on these times is a real treat.
I wanted to recommend you go try some carnitas tacos in Mercado Roma. One thing I'd like you to know about me, is this saying I have for carnitas; "Anyone can make carnitas tacos and sell them in Mexico, but not anyone can make carnitas how it should be".
Now, that might sound "muy mamon" from my part, but honestly, it's a damn shame to see that carnitas are so readily available but barely anyone puts the care into making them and it's disrespectful to the clients and the pigs used to make the dish.
Now, on Mercado Roma, there is one butcher shop almost in the corner of the actual market square (since the 3 other corners all have exits or they continue as a hallway to smaller non-food shops). The butchery is called Meche y Rafael and they set up tables on saturday mornings at 9am till 12 or 1pm (or earlier if they sell out) with freshly made carnitas and chicharron hot and ready to be sold to eat there or be taken out to your home.
They only open on Saturday mornings and they are bona fide world famous now since they have gone to foreign events like Taco Libre in Dallas, TX. where they were sent by the Mexican government of the time to represent authentic taco places from Mexico, and they have also been covered by PBS on their show "Mexico: One Plate at a Time, with Rick Bayless" and the word of mouth of tourists that stumbled upon the place or went there due to hearing about it before.
I'm proud about them and have taken people there that aren't really fans of carnitas but are impressed by how amazing the quality and taste of the tacos they have are since they probably had mediocre experiences before.
And also, I hope this is still around in the mercado, but just down the butcher lane there is a crossroads where to your left is more of the mercado, straight ahead continuing until you reach another corner of it, or to the right where a lot of homecook style restaurants are crammed in that has an exit to Coahuila street.
In this crossroads there is a place called "Helados Palmeiro" which as the name suggests in spanish, is an Ice Cream shop that sells one of the best ice creams that I've tried in the city, and also the best damn malted shakes I've had. They are just called "Malteadas" which is usually just a milkshake anywhere else you order one in Mexico, but this guy actually has the "Malteadas con malta" that sounds redundant since malt is already in the name "Malteada" but it is necessary so clients know that they can get an honest to god, old school style malted shake that most people have never tried before and that is the perfect, decadent place to go for dessert after the carnitas tacos.
Stay safe carnal, I wish you the best and hope to see more of you soon!

I just finished listening to one of your old videos about things that are acceptable to do in the US but not in Mexico. In it you spoke about indirect communication. You've brought it up in a few of your videos. I was wondering if you could do a full video on it and how those of us who are used to direct communication can learn how to navigate it. How can you decipher when yes means no? How can you tell how someone feels if they won't tell you?

@@TrueMexico I have spent several months in Mexico over the past two years and I've been trying to date too. I tried to date one guy who would never make plans because he didn't want to commit to doing something that he couldn't do, which frustrated me. I tried to explain to him that I would prefer to make plans even if they have to be cancelled as long as that is communicated properly. It wasn't until I got back to the United States that I realized that, to him, saying that he wouldn't be able to do something was even more taboo than saying that he would do something and then not doing it. That is so hard to wrap my mind around.

One thing that bothers me is when foreigners say "...but he/she/you don't look Mexican". I find this soooooo incredibly rude.
In a similar note, I don't like some youtubers are using the phrase "white" Mexicans in their videos, disregarding that the population is mostly a combination of ethnicities.

    First of all, hi Paul!
That part about foreign people who prefers Burguer King instead of fonda's food (where it's much better, cheaper and healthy) really annoys me. I always remember an anglospeaker kid who wanted a hotdog in a chilaquiles' stablishment.
And also remembered a few times when I found americans (from the states) talking to the mercado's sellers in English as if it were their obligation to understand them.
I understand that no one is obliged to speak perfectly mexican-spanish, but also, if you travel to another country that speaks another language, you cannot expect everyone else to understand you.
Thanks a lot for your videos. It's always nice to see funny and respectful people like you.

In reality, Mexico is poor, very poor, most people don't go to the places where they live in extreme poverty so, of course! Looks rich as hell. Only in big cities you get the idea that we live in a rich G20 country but this is far from the truth. The level of ignorance in this country is vast. I've lived in Puerto Vallarta in the past and I was shocked at how easy it is to tell the difference between the tourist areas and the poorest areas there, most of that town is practically little Africa I'm afraid, or something. It's pretty sad :(.............and don't even get me started on the corruption that allows these levels of poverty in this country! Cartels, the raping of innocent women, etc. Recently they shot up a pizzeria in Juarez city, 6 innocent people were killed there, just normal people there buying a pizza....Cartels are like giant worms that live underground, they corrode whatever is left that is good or that we can call prosperous in this country....Nobody can deny the impact of the cartels on the economy....they control even the country's produce, vegetables and fruits, that is why everything is so expensive, specially things that come from conflict zones....I stopped buying avocados, they are crap, small and extremely expensive, the same goes for potatoes and tomatoes, those I need so I am extremely careful to pick the best and it's not always available, tomatoes are as hard as pool balls, takes forever to cook them.....and the potatoes are tiny, they sell 'em to you as if they were imported from Europe. You go to these cheap mercados and most of what they sell is also crap, rotten or damaged, pure authentic crap! So, one needs to buy things were they are ultra expensive to expect a tiny itsy bit of ''quality'' at least.

I love so much your vids, and yes! I confirm each and every one of your points. I’m glad you point them out (specially the ones of disrespect)!
If you allow me the comment, I might complement your info as a Mexican abroad: that people’s immediate first word out when they meet me is: Donald Trump, Chapo, drugs, cartel, Speedy Gonzalez; the one of the poor country stays true here; when they reply “Nice. I’ve never been to South America”... not that there is something wrong with being South American. But it either is an unconscious connection of South America = poverty, or just because anything under the US in the map must be south. Not everyone can be good at geography, sure, but c’mon!! It’s one of the most culturally (at least gastronomically) influential countries of the world!

If you are referring to the US, there is a strong effort put out to make people as ignorant and stupid as possible to be able to control them. That's part of it. Note that I did not say that everyone in the US is ignorant or stupid. But many people are oblivious to the fact that they are being manipulated and programmed. The energy overall is much better in Mexico than the US.

@@s6y9l thanks a lot for your comment, and your nice approach to it. Nonetheless, I live in Germany 😅😜. Yet, these stereotypes are, I daresay, universal. I’m told these things almost by everyone I meet (everyone untactful enough. Of course, some people would know saying these things is not exactly what a Mexican would like to listen to, even if their knowledge to the country IS that). 🙂🙂
I mean, there’s no kidding, all those things are true, but it kinda hurts to be seen as JUST that. The worst time was once when I went to a party, and a random dude ran to me and asked “are you the Mexican of the party? I’d like to talk about the cartels, I think it’s a super interesting topic!”. And I was like “yeah... my name is Rodrigo. Very nice meet you... (read that last bit with utmost sarcasm).

Here’s a tip if you ever go on a trip to Tijuana, go into a large crowd of people and yell out at the top of your lungs “viva el nuevo generacion” , basically translates to “I love Mexico”
