- The battery in our 4runner died a terrible death a few days ago. I thought it would be fun to see if a Dewalt battery charger amzn.to/3fFnxqR is able to bring this battery back to life. We also give the Schumacher Jump Starter amzn.to/3E72Ygr a little test.

Read the manual the charger is just fine and works as it should.
Reconditioning mode requirements 24 hours to do it’s job… it literally pulses the battery to break up the sulfate crystals that form. I have this charger and it works wonders. I also use the optima charger for batteries that have completely discharged.
I really want that digital 1200 for that reason!
Does the Optima charger bring them back to life ?
Is it safe to do if your battery has swelled a little and will it help a battery in that condition?
it is to bad that you didn't use the reconditioning the way it was intended to be used. it actually works if used correctly
Question. Does the vehicle battery need to be detached from the cable in order for the Dewalt charger/maintainer to work or voltage ti show?
I bought one but, it doesn't turn on. I'm thinking it could be defective.
The battery may be shot, but that's the reason why you choose to get a charger with a recondition function anyways, but just like the cheaper options they don't do much besides a basic charge. In all the Videos I have seen where it actually works is when you add water to the battery cells and have the cells uncovered and away from anything that could catch fire and charge it for 10-15 mins using a DC Welder that can deliver a 20-30 Volt charge at 30-50 amps or so and then cooled and then repeat for another 10-15 mins.(*NOTE, DC Welder ONLY, not AC welder). When Cooled and stabilized then try a normal charge or if it seems to be holding a charge then put it into the vehicle and test it. If it works, continue using the battery as normal for a few days and then re-test with your basic multimeter etc for correct voltage and charging.
Your the second person to describe a similar method. The first person mentioned using the “engine start” with to me means basically fairly high amperage.
However. I think I should give this a shot and see what happens. If anything just to indulge my curiosity 😂
I can't get mine to charge a battery. Every time I connect it to charge one it goes into recondition mode. I feel as if I've wasted my money
There's nothing wrong with that charger. So let's go through the reasons you're not happy with it.
First: the 12.5 volt initial reading. That was no doubt correct. You should verify it with your volt meter. Your battery is made to supply a certain voltage at a certain current. Your battery is shot. It can generate the volts, it can't sustain the current. If you apply a load higher than it can sustain the voltage drops and this your car won't start. Essentially the battery becomes a resistive load and the missing voltage is dropped across the battery itself.
The recondition feature. Over time the plates in your battery can develope a coating that reduces performance. The recondition feature is intended to break up that coating and restore the performance. Nothing more. It does work in specific cases, not all.
The engine start. That charger gives you about 50 amps for a start. I've seen some that do 80. Here's why it didn't work. When I said the missing voltage was dropped across the battery itself. It's because two loads in series divide voltage.. the internal resistance of the battery is in series with the starter. Two loads in parallel divide the current (amps). If your bad battery takes the same current as the starter, only half of the engine start current goes to the starter. If it's 50 amps then your starter only got 25 amps. That's not enough! If you had disconnected your battery you probably would've gotten better results.
Why did the jump pack work? It can deliver higher current for short periods. Jump packs are several hundred amps. I have one that's 1200 amps. So it had more juice to drop across the bad battery you had. I hope this is helpful to others watching this video.
@hughjassole859, you're misinformed on the "Starting" function on this type of charger. It doesn't directly supply starting current to the starter during cranking. It only supplies up to a 50 amp charge to the battery for one minute, then signals to try to start your engine. It's not like a starting cart at old gas stations or NASCAR. It won't start the engine with the battery disconnected as you suggested. The engine start feature is a little misleading on these new computerized $50 chargers.
@@warsurplus either way, a 50 amp charge for 1 minute to a bad battery isn't going to boost it enough to start anything. I have the same charger so I am aware of the limitations. I also don't have the time or the space to go into all of the technical explanations in TH-cam comments. Also I didn't say it would start the car with the battery disconnected, only that he would've gotten better results.
@@Michigan-Tactical He would have gotten zero results if he disconnected the battery since this charger isn't capable of supplying starting current to a cranking engine, only a one minute 50 amp charge to the battery. And, as you say if you own this model yourself, you'd know that. This appliance is relatively light duty. The tone of your reply is that your knowledge exceeds others' on this topic, however your statements suggest otherwise. Humility is underrated.
No need to remove the caps
My guy skipped steps and rushed things and said it’s a bad product lmaooo what a clown
Follow the instructions recondition the battery for 24 hours then put it back in the car. Or leave the battery in the car but take off the terminals post and hit battery recondition. Thats basically resets the battery and it takes a while like 24-36 hours but it works just takes time. Trust the process.
Because if you quick charge a dead battery it won't hold a charge
Some times you just have to realize batteries have a limited service life and there is no magic machine or procedure to fix bad batteries no matter what anyone tells you. Batteries actually decay and come apart internally therefor can't be fixed. If you run a battery flat for a period on time during it's serviceable life then maybe it can be rejuvenated to a degree.
If it will not start a car and does what it says compared to that little engine that could and did I wouldn't trust the alt meter either take the DeWalt back . P.s but a battery from Walsmart keep the receipt and every two years take the battery back say it's not putting out what it's suppose to , and you get a new one . Free car battery for life lol seriously! You do this and it will never fail it's a loop 🤣
Already returned! Now thats an 💡.
Maybe you are better at reviving these days. I have the DeWalt 2 bank charger and will tell you how to get most out of it. If battery voltage is too low and the DeWalt shuts off automatically, with the "!" error, I connect charge to bad battery and parallel connect a good battery with jumper cables to a good battery of same type (AGM, lead acid). Good lead acid to bad AGM is OK. As long as it takes for the dead battery to accept a charge. The good battery keeps a constant voltage to the bad battery and the charger will kick in if the dead accepts charge from good battery. You can also use a 2A trickle charger but may take days. Or a "dumb" old style charger. Once the DeWalt will charge it, charge until float FLO. Then you can desulfate it 1-3 days (charge, desulfate, charge, desulfate...) . Desulfating dead battery doesn't help as it doesn't charge at the same time. You desulfate a charged battery to try to get rid of the sulfated lead that charging doesn't get rid of to increase CA. Oddly my optima yellow and a lead acid died within 2 weeks of each other on different vehicles. Got them back to original CA using this method since DeWalt wouldn't charge a battery at 6V. Also have 3 old batteries I'm restoring. One sitting in garage 3 years went back is up to 610 of 690 CA, and just now starting the first desulfate cycle. Add water if plates are exposed to air - NO MORE - filling to normal level on a dead battery can cause spilling when the level rises. After fully charged and ready to go back in vehicle, fill to correct level with distilled water.... or with the acid that spilled out because you filled it while it was dead.
I have the same charger and have run the desulfate function many times on different batteries and it has never improved anything. I am very disappointed in DeWalt.
That’s good to know. I was starting to think I did something wrong or had a bad unit.
I can't even get mine to charge a battery. Every time I connect to a battery it automatically goes into recondition mode
@@carldehoney8633
Have you allowed it to complete Recondition mode? without disturbing it? it usually takes 24 hours.
They should no longer enter Recondition mode the next time they are charged.
@@Przemek-fy5th Tried it once. Let it run for about 28 hours. It never changed mode
There's nothing more useless than a battery charger with a computer.
I kind of agree. The computer does seem as though it’s in the way. If I had an analog charger, I’m guess I could get a bit more life out of this battery.
No need any computer just volt meter to check
You’re clearly don’t do programming on vehicles.
Easier to move a power cord and charger to battery than to pull battery
That is true, but easier to test the charger and battery not inside the car. :)
Adding baby formula distilled water into battery makes it clear not to rely on any info in this video. Hey buddy that distill water contains added minerals for babies and cannot be used for batteries. This is just Schumacher jump starter advertising which you can find in open package conditions in almost any Walmart clearance section because of high return volume. Unfair to advertise something by unfairly bringing down great working product.

For all the money spent on charger and jump pack, you could have just bought a new battery! Good luck to you bud.
Oh a new battery was purchased. I wanted to see if the charger was any good.
The jump pack is part of our tool kit when we go exploring etc.
use a flat blade screwdriver to remove the caps oh yeah put the cig out
Cigarette?
U did it wrong.
Did I? I'm all ears.
Would never recommend this charger to anyone! Won’t charge batteries if they low than 8 volts , I left my lights on overnight, and brand new charger won’t do shit .. don’t buy it!
Yea, it’s not a great charger that’s for sure.
I’m disappointed of dewalt charger, it doesn’t do anything
I saw lot of mistakes you did
Admittedly I’m not perfect. 😂
you start it during the 60 seconds, not after.
I tried both ways.
@@EmbarkWithMark The clamps can be real sensitive make sure they are connected tight, i've made that mistake a few times. The cool thing about this charger is all you need to do is connect it and let the charger do the rest. Takes a few minutes for the charger to diagnose the battery takes a while to get used to it.
Not true according to the directions. Wait 60 seconds then start car
@@axjohn Then there ya go. 👍
