  • In this video how to stop your dog from running out the door you will watch Thomas take a German Shepherd pulling on the leash and running out the door, to a calm dog with patience. This a major issue for many dog owners, its time for a walk and your dog either runs our the door away from you or drags you out the front door on the leash. This is no way to enjoy a walk with your dog. We hope this video helps to stop these issues and increase the control you have over your dog while on the walk. ►►I do this 100% for YOU the dog owner every week, do me one solid favor and SUBSCRIBE to my channel! ►►

What an important video. Even if your dog doesn't run out after people or other animals, just being able to be the gatekeeper for your dog for any big portal like this is such good behavior for any dog to know. Thanks for this!

Great video. I do it a little different. I always have my client step out first, count to three or more and then release the dog out. Then dog is out into a sit immediately. Sometimes I don’t have them release the dog. They just come back in, shut the door and give a verbal praise or treat. Because sometimes we want to go out and sign for a package and have no intention of letting the dog go with us. Human first over the threshold and the dog comes out and sits immediately or just stays in the house until I come bac

Does Thomas have a video on playing with your dog(ex: fetch - he gets the ball and can have hours of fun on his own and hours again if you step towards him thinking your going for the ball which I am, so he gets the ball and runs all over the place. It's nice to get him exhausted with minimal movement (he's very active) but I also want to interact/play too. I might have overlooked his videos for it if he has it.

Hippo hey I've been binge watching for a few weeks now and I haven't seen one on playing 😕 I can tell you with my bullmastif pitbull mix and toy poodle maltese mix. I would teach them drop it with their toys and leave it or wait. I pick up the ball and then I throw and say go get it! They run after it I cheer continue saying go get it then clap and say bring it back to get them to run back directly to me and say drop it, and they do. They are smart, they do it every time, and we have blast 😁 Remember that you have to be enthusiastic!

Thomas, I need your help. We rescued an elderly Cocker Spaniel, on Friday. He is 12 years old. Sweetest boy ever. Came from an elderly couple who clearly did not take care of him. They brought him to a kill shelter and I just couldn't. He honestly is so super sweet and loving. I immediatly brought him to our vet. They told me that he has terrible ear infections and he has terrible smell about him. Come to find out, he has a lot of dental issues. I am having all of the dental work done on him on 8/14, which should have been done a long time ago. However; 8/14 is the earliest that my vet could take him. He doesn't listen at all!!!! I was kind of keeping my eyes and ears open. He came with a tremendous ear infection. Which, apparently he has had an issue with. I brought him to my vet on Saturday. In my opinion, it was a new vet in the hospital and I was not impressed, at all!! After spending $181.40 and waiting for the appointment, which took longer than the appointment? Okay. Anyway, I am almost sure that he is hard of hearing. My husband has a Harley and he was out on a ride with our granddaughter. Upon his return, both my 10 year old cocker and now the 12 year old that we rescued, were sleeping on our patio furniture. As soon as the Harley pulled in, Bailey knew it and heard it. Granted, she is familiar with the sound. The 12 year old didn't budge. It wasn't until Bailey started to bark. So, I assume he has a hearing loss, which could account for his lack of listening to me when I am telling to come. So, I'm not sure if it is his stubbornness or his lack of hearing. He does not know how to sit, lay down and he doesn't know how to play fetch or play at all. Although he is 12 years old, this lil boy has a lot of pep in his step. We own 27 acres of land. We allow our 10 year old to run, like she really doesn't run and does her thing and comes back in. We never allow her to be out on her own, but we don't leash her because she is obedient and comes when she is called. She has had no formal training and she just does what we tell her to do. This old boy? Not so much. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I rescued him and I take full accountability and responsibility for him and I want him to have an amazing last few years of his life with us, in our loving home. Help? He gets along with our other girl, and we have 2 rescue cats. He is super sweet and I just want to be able to be outside with him, off leash and have him listen to me. Or if he can't hear, are there hand signals that I can teach him. There is a saying that you can't teach old dogs new tricks? Is that true? How can I tell if he is just being a stubborn ass or he just has a difficult time hearing. Also, I have noticed that he tends to circle all of the time. Please help me!!!

My 110lbs shepherd/lab mix gets defensive and begins growling when we introduce him to new people especially in our new home. • @armychap048

Should we use this method when we go out of any door in our home? Or only when we are concerned with them "running away" or "bolting out"? We have a back door that releases our dogs into our fenced in back yard, and they will about run you over trying to get out as soon as the doors are opened but they are pretty good about not bolting out the front... My initial thoughts are that we should work with them at each door, whether we are going out front for a walk or into the back yard to play??? Consistency! Its just kind of a "hassle" for whoever lets them out back to have to put them on a leash before they do so... But if that is the price we have to pay to regain control that I suppose is worth it.

Tom,I wish I’d known you were in the U.K. recently ,we would have loved help with our rescue German Shepherd , our situation is some what different to most so I’d welcome your advise . When it comes to walking him ,he pulls like a train ! It’s very difficult cause I’m the one that usually walks him ,but here the thing ,- I’m disabled & rely on a mobility scooter to get about ,& he still pulls ,of course our speed his a bit quicker than your normal walking pace ,so then if he is out walking with other family members ,it’s head down & he is an express train who prefers to trot than walk at a normal place ….long winded sorry Tom ,but would welcome your input & to know if you do anymore in the U.K. I’d like to be considered for your help

When we got her 10 years ago i didn't know anything about training, relationships and all that stuff and neither did my parents. How do I resolve a dominance issue between a dominant 6yr old female Chihuahua (formally abused rescue), a submissive male 7 yr old Dachshund mix and a dominant 1yr old female German Shepherd?
Background: We owned the Dachshund mix at 8weeks old then adopted the 2 months old Chihuahua rescue 4 months later. She established dominance between the 2 and have lived together with minimal problems for over 6 years. Both are spaded and neutered. The Chihuahua is mostly antisochial with other dogs, but is tolerating under most circumstances except for personal space or food.
We then aquired an 8 week old GSD and introduced the puppy to the other 2 dogs. The Chihuahua would growl at the GSD when she entered her personal space or during situations of food and when the puppy would attempt to play. This was harmless while the GSD was relatively the same size as the other dogs. The sitation suddenly changed when the GSD exploded in size relative to the other to dogs.
1st incident: Was an attack on the Chihuahua which was triggered by one of the dogs usual growlings due to unwanted company from the GSD who postured herself for a "butt sniff" then after the warning from the Chihuahua quickly changed into a biting attack. No skin broken, no injuries. (GSD not yet spaded)
2nd incident: After deciding there was a problem I decided to get a muzzle for the GSD to help with training. I put it on the dog and let the dog loose in the home. The dog ran to play and as soon as she encountered the Chihuahua there was an attack. I unfortunately bought the wrong size muzzle so it slipped off during the scuffle. The Chihuahua was injured pretty bad and needed stiches. (GSD not yet spaded)
3rd incident: After incident #2 we decided to keep the GSD separate from the other 2 dogs. Finally had the GSD spaded around 8 months old. (little late) Worked on leash, obedience and tolerance training and corrected the GSD if she seemed she would show posture aggression toward the Chihuahua. Never any pre-indicators from the GSD, just subtle inspection of the other dog then she would attack in the previous incidences. I allowed 2 months of training before I tried a supervised introduction (with prong collar, choke and better fitting muzzle) of the GSD to the Chihuahua. 1st it seemed it was going well then the same situation happened again...a sniffing hello of the Chihuahua, the Chihuahua growled, then the GSD attempted to have her for lunch. This was to see if any progress had been made during the 2 months of training. We have concluded that the 3 dogs may NEVER be able to coexist together in the same space without incident and we are currently deciding what to do. In the meantime the GSD remains separated from the other dogs at ALL times.
    Additional Info:
The only attempt on the male dog was an accidental "let out" of the male Dachshund mix into the back yard by one of the kids. The GSD was there and she pounced the male dog pinning him down. She could not bite him since she had a muzzle on, so there was no damage. It was quickly broken up and the dogs were separated.
The GSD had not been socialized much as a puppy.
After incident #3 the GSD was socialized more often at the dog park. (This is a work in progress) There were situations of nipping and chasing other dogs. After subsequent trips to the park the fearful/agressive/defensive behavior happens less and less. She generally has a muzzle on when taken to the park.
While in the home she follows most commands with little or no leash pressure, but she is kept separate from the other dogs.
With the information provided, what is the BEST course of action? (Please answer question 1 at the beginning and this one) Thanks so much!

We practice this when going out the door to our back yard at home, but with no leashes since I have 7... They all seem to understand what is expected except for my male GSD... He will calmly sit and wait until released. Once I release him, he bolts out the door and is SUPER vocal the entire way out which amps up my other dogs who were just calm.... 😐 Can I break this habit?!

My other dog (the older one) dose not really care about a new dog especially when the dog is smaller then him so he's not a problem. The dog we are hoping to get (His name is Toby) is good with other dogs so we are hoping that he should no be a problem. If you have any tips on how to get my dog Tigger to calm down and try to accept toby and play with him and welcome him pleaseeee let me know!!! :D (also wish me luck that i can adopt him tomorrow! ;D)

I do this without leash going from the porch to fenced back yard. 9 times out 10 she listens and waits till I say break. If she sees a squirrel or something she will charge out. She has a high prey drive. I try and stop her at times she is too quick. She got out the front door charging past my son and ran off. What else do I do to stop that?

So my dog will go to a specific location in the house when I tell her place and tell her to stay I can even open the door and ring the doorbell and she'll stay. The problem is when there is an actual person on the other end of the door . She gets so focused on the person, she hears nothing that I'm saying and starts to run to the front door. How do I stop this behavior from happening Thanks

My dog waits up until I say "break," and then she darts down the stairs. Ik that's SUPER unsafe, but how do I teach her to walk slowly??

Some guy on the street looked at my dogs prong collar and straight up told me I was an asshole for using one on him.

Doesn't work, dog always bolts when not on leash. On leash, he'll sit, he'll stay when reaching for door, stay when door is open. But if door is just opened, no leash and you say stay he'll bolt. I don't think there bIs a way to train dogs. Dogs are just not good pets. They want to be free and we are trying to force them to not be. I don't that can be overcome
