Younger Cebuano speakers use "asa" more often while older Cebuano speakers use "diin". For me, I'm not included in that stereotype 'cause I interchange between the two but from what I read online, in a Facebook post talking about standardized Cebuano, it said that "diin" is for past tense while "asa" for present and future tense. And btw, in my island province in Region 8, out of 8 municipalities, our baranggay is the only Cebuano-speaking place that uses "dis-a". My friends from other places in the province (even from the neighboring baranggays) were confused when they heard the word "dis-a" for the first time since they only use "asa" and "diin". So I was excited and amazed when you include it in this video.

'Hunong dira' means 'stop right there' (to stop at a specific location or landmark). Hunong is for the word 'stop' or the phrase 'come to a halt'. 'Dira' is a derivative of 'diha' meaning 'there' or 'right there'. People who speak Bisaya/Visayan from the neighboring islands and from Mindanao tend to say 'diha'. Locals in Cebu use 'dira'. Yes, the other phrase that's very commonly used is 'Lugar lang'. This phrase is used to tell the driver or the operator of the vehicle that you, the passenger, is ready or about to or want to disembark from the vehicle. 'Lugar' means a spot or a location or a space or a specific place. 'Lang' means 'just' or 'simply'. The longer more meaningful phrase where this 'lugar lang' came from is 'Palihug i-lugar lang diha Manoy kay mona-ug ko' which translates to 'Please just stop at a safe spot so I can disembark' (contextual but close literal translation). Overtime the phrase 'lugar lang' has gained popularity over the longer phrase. Whether you say 'hunong palihug', 'hunong dira' or 'lugar lang' you are conveying the same message that you intend to alight from a moving vehicle, thus, the driver will check if it is safe to stop and do the next step accordingly.
Miss, that must be "lugar lang" which could mean like "stop this jeepney where it is free to stop", this is to avoid the jeepney driver being caught for traffic violations because there are a lot of traffic rules in every side of the road in Cebu City like "no parking" or "no stopping". I'm not a language professor. My comfort in teaching this language stems from the fact that Visayan dialect is my native language and I grew up in these islands -- Visayas and Mindanao. Most people from Davao understands Visayan dialect or Bisaya, though they also incorporate quite a bit of Tagalog words. I also have a relative from Davao, and that's just my observation with the way they talk. But rest assured that they can understand and even speak Bisaya. Thank you for your feedback.

Aside from Tagalog, they also have borrowings from the native languages in Mindanao like "kalintura" for "fever" in English or "hilanat" in Cebuano which I heard that they borrowed it from a native tribe's language. I just don't knoe where it came from.
Sure. ‘imong’ is just short for ‘imo nga’. Native speakers prefer to use the shorter version of most phrases or combination of words. However, spelling out every word in the tutorials here is intended for beginners who might be confused with what the actual Visayan word(s) is/are.

Thank you for the feedback. Yes, there are stuff that are repeated and long and possibly too dull and too slow for the advanced learners. I do keep in mind, always, the first-time learner of the language, and the approach is more about how can the learning be absorbed best, e.g., by repetition. I do have my own grown children who don’t speak a single Cebuano/Visayan word except perhaps the word ‘Mama’ and I envision that one day if they ever decide to learn the language on their own, it will be the same exact way it’s done in these videos, from me, through me. But truly appreciate your effort for bringing that up.

The proper way of saying it: Naunsa ka? (Ka is short for 'ikaw') ...translates to 'What happened to you?' If you want to use nimo -- 'Gi-unsa nimo?' (nimo is possessive pronoun for 'you/yours') ... translates to 'How did you..?' Notice the difference. Use 'ikaw/ka' to denote a direct object, meanwhile use 'kanimo/nimo' to signify an indirect object. In the case of 'Gi-unsa nimo... the thought is incomplete, thus, a phrase follows and the word after 'ang' is usually the indirect object. Usually something follows after 'gi-unsa nimo' like 'Gi-unsa nimo pag pawong ang kalayo?' (How did you put out the fire?); 'Gi-unsa nimo pag putol ang kahoy?' (How did you cut the wood?); Gi-unsa nimo pagluto ang karne? (How did you cook the meat?) Take note of the use of 'pag' denoting 'the act' or the 'how'.

Agree. Palayaw is Tagalog. Dangga or angga is Cebuano/Bisaya. Unsa to is something either abstract or not present (cannot be seen at the moment, could be an event or a thing or an idea mentioned in the past), 'to' for 'kadto' meaning if you can actually see the thing and point at it, it's from a measurable distance as in 'layo'. If you say, 'unsa to?' or 'unsa kadto' it means whatever you are pointing at is at a distance. So translating, 'unsa to' could mean 'what is that over there?' However if you imply the abstract usage you can say, 'Unsa gani to imong gisulti nako gahapon?' translated as 'What was it that you told me about yesterday?' Thus, implying about something that is not tangible and therefore cannot be pointed at like a real object. However, 'unsa na?' for 'unsa kana?' connotes something that is visible and can be pointed at in that very moment. Hope that clears that up for you.
From my understanding she is confused didto and diha. From my time in Cebu I was corrected when using diha to describe something was “there” but close. I was told to only use diha to describe something that was fat and didto to describe that was close.
Diha is typically whatever is in your immediate view or periphery. You can almost perceive its closeness relative to where you are as something within your view or reach. Hope that helps.
If I am not mistaken, it is Hiligaynon or Ilonngo "Nganu ka Haw?" or " Maano ka Haw?" = It means, what do you want, or what are you doing ( not exact translation)
Saying "oo" in bisaya sounds very unnatural since no one says oo today. If youre asked a question and you will say yes you just reply with "o" because thats a more common way people say it
It’s a matter of what you’re used to and who you talk to. For the older demographic ‘Oo’ is more recognized as it is usually accompanied with the double nodding of the head. When I talk to my older kinfolk, ‘Oo’ resonates more than just ‘O’.
Taysa is short for ‘time usa’ meaning ‘sandali lang’ or ‘teka muna’ in Tagalog, or ‘just a minute’, ‘wait’, ‘hold on’ in English. Sometimes this is expressed by saying ‘kadyot lang’ or “kadyot ‘sa”.

People from different regions borrow words all the time. Some words get mixed up. But no I would not use ‘sabay’ either. Ni dungan or ni uban or nikuyog or nag dungan or nag uban is a more apt usage. The language is evolving. And there are words that are get thrown in the mix. Yet, this Visayan tutorial is intended to help the basic learner. For in depth understanding of the language, there are actually a lot of books for your thorough perusal.

That's the equivalent words of Cebuano's basic prepositions when translaed to Tagalog.
You can add nganhi/ngari (dito); nganha/ngara (diyan); ngadto (doon)

I'm not a language professor. My comfort in teaching this language stems from the fact that Visayan dialect is my native language and I grew up in these islands -- Visayas and Mindanao. Most people from Davao understands Visayan dialect or Bisaya, though they also incorporate quite a bit of Tagalog words. I also have a relative from Davao, and that's just my observation with the way they talk. But rest assured that they can understand and even speak Bisaya. Thank you for your feedback.

Bisayang Dako best wishes on this initiative of yours. God be with you. Btw, Cebuano is a language, not a dialect. But the Cebuano language has many dialects - Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu City, Dalaguete - Carcar, Dumaguete, Bohol, Southern Leyte, etc
@@bisayangdako3175 True. I noticed that Cebuano speakers from Mindanao has borrowed a lot of Tagalog words and incorportae them into their vocabulary. Aside from Tagalog, they also have borrowings from the native languages in Mindanao like "kalintura" for "fever" in English or "hilanat" in Cebuano which I heard that they borrowed it from a native tribe's language. I just don't knoe where it came from.

Sure. ‘imong’ is just short for ‘imo nga’. Native speakers prefer to use the shorter version of most phrases or combination of words. However, spelling out every word in the tutorials here is intended for beginners who might be confused with what the actual Visayan word(s) is/are.

Bisaya is more of an amalgamation of precolonial language with Spanish shaped influences
You should try out Hiligaynon, it has more Spanish influences

Thank you for the feedback. Yes, there are stuff that are repeated and long and possibly too dull and too slow for the advanced learners. I do keep in mind, always, the first-time learner of the language, and the approach is more about how can the learning be absorbed best, e.g., by repetition. I do have my own grown children who don’t speak a single Cebuano/Visayan word except perhaps the word ‘Mama’ and I envision that one day if they ever decide to learn the language on their own, it will be the same exact way it’s done in these videos, from me, through me. But truly appreciate your effort for bringing that up.

The proper way of saying it: Naunsa ka? (Ka is short for 'ikaw') ...translates to 'What happened to you?' If you want to use nimo -- 'Gi-unsa nimo?' (nimo is possessive pronoun for 'you/yours') ... translates to 'How did you..?' Notice the difference. Use 'ikaw/ka' to denote a direct object, meanwhile use 'kanimo/nimo' to signify an indirect object. In the case of 'Gi-unsa nimo... the thought is incomplete, thus, a phrase follows and the word after 'ang' is usually the indirect object. Usually something follows after 'gi-unsa nimo' like 'Gi-unsa nimo pag pawong ang kalayo?' (How did you put out the fire?); 'Gi-unsa nimo pag putol ang kahoy?' (How did you cut the wood?); Gi-unsa nimo pagluto ang karne? (How did you cook the meat?) Take note of the use of 'pag' denoting 'the act' or the 'how'.

Agree. Palayaw is Tagalog. Dangga or angga is Cebuano/Bisaya. Unsa to is something either abstract or not present (cannot be seen at the moment, could be an event or a thing or an idea mentioned in the past), 'to' for 'kadto' meaning if you can actually see the thing and point at it, it's from a measurable distance as in 'layo'. If you say, 'unsa to?' or 'unsa kadto' it means whatever you are pointing at is at a distance. So translating, 'unsa to' could mean 'what is that over there?' However if you imply the abstract usage you can say, 'Unsa gani to imong gisulti nako gahapon?' translated as 'What was it that you told me about yesterday?' Thus, implying about something that is not tangible and therefore cannot be pointed at like a real object. However, 'unsa na?' for 'unsa kana?' connotes something that is visible and can be pointed at in that very moment. Hope that clears that up for you.

If you meant ‘Magpa-abot lang ko’ it translates to ‘I’m just going to wait’ in English. ‘Maghintay na lang ako’ in Tagalog.

From my understanding she is confused didto and diha. From my time in Cebu I was corrected when using diha to describe something was “there” but close. I was told to only use diha to describe something that was fat and didto to describe that was close.

Diha is typically whatever is in your immediate view or periphery. You can almost perceive its closeness relative to where you are as something within your view or reach. Hope that helps.

I’m not sure of what phrase this is. It’s not Bisaya or Cebuano. Kindly elaborate on how this phrase was used (the scenario).
If I am not mistaken, it is Hiligaynon or Ilonngo "Nganu ka Haw?" or " Maano ka Haw?" = It means, what do you want, or what are you doing ( not exact translation)

Saying "oo" in bisaya sounds very unnatural since no one says oo today. If youre asked a question and you will say yes you just reply with "o" because thats a more common way people say it
It’s a matter of what you’re used to and who you talk to. For the older demographic ‘Oo’ is more recognized as it is usually accompanied with the double nodding of the head. When I talk to my older kinfolk, ‘Oo’ resonates more than just ‘O’.

What makes me really angry is that people mostly from Mindanao are the ones teaching the incorrectly named quote-unquote "Bisaya" language (it should be Cebuano cause thats the appropriate name). What they are teaching are the ones being spoken in Mindanao, which is very much influenced by Hiligaynon and Tagalog, and then claim it as "Bisaya". 💀

People from different regions borrow words all the time. Some words get mixed up. But no I would not use ‘sabay’ either. Ni dungan or ni uban or nikuyog or nag dungan or nag uban is a more apt usage. The language is evolving. And there are words that are get thrown in the mix. Yet, this Visayan tutorial is intended to help the basic learner. For in depth understanding of the language, there are actually a lot of books for your thorough perusal.
