I've always thought that the Death Star(s) had some sort of capital-ship docking capability. After all, neither of them had actual sublight engines, only a hyperdrive. So I always thought they would get tugged/pushed into position by a compliment of ISDs. The orientation of the one in that shot from Rogue One (i.e - engines away from the station), would definitely support this idea. Similarly, I always thought the Stars had at least some sort of production capability, for both starfighters and larger ships.
I mean the star destroyer docking bay is where they build it, a star destroyer is the capital of the fleet. It is used as a vehicle, but also used as an office. Not Eco but I can say covenant weaponry is deadlier. It goes onto detail on the books about how a single shot would burn through the armor and get the flesh inside. While SW blaster do this as well, we see how a shot to the arm, whole burning it, leaves it still in place and somewhat operational. In halo the plasma would burn your arm down to the bone, and it would fall off. Not to mention the splash damage that might catch others.
I'd say Star Wars blasters, for a few reasons. Star Wars blaster bolts are more often depicted travelling faster than Halo plasma bolts. Halo plasma weaponry may be more destructive on a shot-for-shot basis, but their bolts' slow speed would make them inherently less accurate than a blaster. You can physically see a plasma bolt coming, and move to avoid it or duck behind cover. While blaster bolts - though not moving quite as fast as regular Earthly bullets - seem to move faster than any human could reasonably react to. Less accuracy = less reliability in landing one's shots. Less reliable hits = more wasted ammo, which adds up to a massive drain on military resources over time. Furthermore, Halo plasma weapons demand their users get very, very close to their targets before they can reliably hit anything. Within about 30-40 metres or so. An English war bow from the Middle Ages could shoot further than that. Meanwhile Earthly infantry rifles can hit and kill targets up to 500 metres away. Star Wars blasters seem to have comparable effective ranges, though we've never got definite numbers as far as I know. And Star Wars blasters don't seem to suffer from bullet-drop, which would only make them easier for infantry to aim effectively. Oh yes, and Star Wars blasters are more often depicted as having iron-sights or optics mounted on them, so the user could actually aim them accurately. Meanwhile, hardly any Covenant plasma weapons have iron sights, optics, or aiming assists of any kind. So a user of such weapons couldn't even reliably hit a stationary target with a single shot.
Well you have to consider the death star wasn't ever really "operational" it was always basically in what the navy would call "shakedown cruise" if you had one that was in service for say a decade or more I'm sure having a ship yard and a multitude of features that was never dreamed of in film would come to be.
1: If capital ships can make hyperspace jumps with fighters docked in their hangars, the Death Star should certainly be capable of the same even with Star Destroyers. 2: I don't feel that "indirect kills" should count for a pilot's total. Isn't taking down a Death Star enough of an achievement? :D 3: I could see the Death Star's massive hangars being able to repair and resupply capital ships, but building a whole vessel from scratch is probably outside the scope of the station. I'd actually be curious to know how self-sufficient the Death Star was intended to be. The amount of materials and components needed just to maintain the thing has to be absolutely staggering.
Hmmm maybe do them separately. Androids are self aware machines and cyborgs are people that are part machine. I read a paper in my collage biology classes that considered people with pace makers as cyborgs. My question is are droids androids?
No star destroyers at Yavin is one of those Fridge Logic things you don't think of until well after you watched the movie. It would have made sense for the Death Star to carry ISDs and deploy them to intercept rebel ships trying to escape Yavin... which, strangely, they didn't try to do. In real life, the explanation likely is that nobody thought of it, and they wouldn't have had the FX budget anyway. The best in-universe explanation that I can come up with is that the newly completed Death Star had yet to receive its full complement of ISDs, and the ones it did have were dispatched to Dantooine to deal with Princess Leia's fictional base.
Imagine if there was a whole fleet of SDs and support ships docked inside, and deployed during the fourth movie. I don't think even Luke could've gotten through that...
Makes sense. Iserlohrn Fortress from Legend of Galactic Heroes is of similar size and power to DS, though not mobile. It’s essentially a full service naval base capable of servicing its organic defense fleet.
No, it's not contradictory, because the resources put into building the DS battlestations still prevented the construction of many, many conventional ships.
So in your mind a rivalry means these various admirals and military leaders are going to disobey the emperor when he says “park your fucking ships in this battle station!” ? Besides, we do see the fleet acting in support of Death Star 2. So if anything hard canon shits all over this supposed rivalry if you think it means ships and stations somehow can’t mix🤷♂️
I think you hit a key point about seeing PART of a star destroyer. My belief is that it was also used to house PARTS of a star destroyer so it was a portable maintenance station too.
It has at least one full drydock capable of full ship construction. It may also have what you mentioned, but I do think that was simply the rear view of a complete star destroyer. Examples of parts of star destroyers would be spare turbolasers and engines down to nuts and bolts, not an entire complete rear of a star destroyer. How often is there going to be a situation where you need to replace the entire rear of an ISD? Damage that catastrophic would blow the whole ship up.
don't forget the the Comic Book Visionaris, which gave us also the image of the Death Star Drydock, housing not only several ISDs, but also an Exekutor SSD. And i always thought that the ISD in ANH would be docked, given that angle it approached the Death Star
Eck, I was listening to the video while walking around my room and doing stuff, and I look out my room, I see a full moon, and my heart skipped a beat before I realized what I was truly looking at.
Back from liking some japanese stuff ( not the extremley popular ones like anime and manga) and man I forgot how joyful and calming your intro was, and how much I loved your vids.
A very long time ago, even before the Prequels, there was talk about the unfinished part of the Death Star 2 was hangers for the Imperial fleet. That's why it was fully operational and yet incomplete. But that was a nice catch from Rogue One.
In The Force Unleashed videogame, the final stage takes place in the unfinished Death Star 1. As you walk from the entrance of one the hangars towards the inner sections, you can see plenty of star destroyers docked inside the station. They could be taking part in the construction process, or they could be actually stationed there.
I honestly did notice this myself, but I had to rewatch it several times just to make sure I wasn't seeing things. I was wondering when one of my star wars channels was going to bring this up. Good eye sir!
Recently I have read a series of book by David Weber which explores the idea of massive, Death Star-esque battle stations. I would love to see you discuss more of Weber's work, especially in comparison to other fiction and writing. I feel that you would get a real kick out of his Honor Harrington series, especially with all of the detail he and the fans of the series go through to flesh out his work.
It’s so funny, I was just watching rogue one and that scene had brought me to this video... I didn’t notice the star destroyer but it brought the question to my mind
If you look at the headsets you see jedi wearing when piloting both kinds of Jedi starfighter they wrap around the forehead. I remember reading somewhere that this was supposed to be an experimental neural interface that jedi were able to make work because they were force sensitive while "normal" pilots usually weren't. This allowed for much quicker reactions and more complex maneuvers than manual fighter controls would otherwise permit.
I remember the old book that said that the death star didn’t just have big star destroyer hangers, it’s actually a dry dock, yup they are manufacturing star destroyers in there as well
when the death star goes into hyperspace all support ships including many star destroyers dock within the death stars shell therefore saving fuel and also allowing for huge assault on any target .repairs and arming can take place during transit and also allowing crews some rest and relaxation time with friends and family who lived and worked full time on the death star .
Interesting. And honestly all of this would make sense. The Death stars were such massive bases that like Eck says, giving them docking/repair bays big enough for Star Destroyers makes sense. Besides, it would probably end up saving money and it's not like this wasn't already a massive drain on the economy. Might as well make the totally indestructible planet killing bases carry the defense fleet. Heck, if the Tarkin doctrine worked then they could keep the smaller ships docked there almost permanently and save money there as well as no one would dare oppose the Empire.
It was a mobile shipyard and naval base. It could support a fleet of Star Destroyers allowing the Death Star to dominate a sector without showing its self
Makes sense actually, "Battlesstation", not much of one if it's really just their verses version to an extremely odd an large shaped A-10 Warthog, an built around the main gun. A space station of THAT size should I'd imagine also be able to not only house huge ships like Star Destroyers but launch, fit, repair and perhaps even make them.. Thatd be disheartening to even a large Vong fleet.. moving in to attack the Death Star which only looks fairly unprotected and then suddenly parts open up an an Armada of large SDs sail out accompanied by swarms of TIEs and support ships of every type and size.. Thatd be pretty much EVERY other SW factions Worst nightmare case scenario. I believe Vong agents even hinted as much. An you had to know such scenarios kept Rebel Leadership awake at night for years
Yeah, it does make sense. I thought there was an old concept art of showing this exact feature way before canon outright confirms it but it's been wayyyy long since I saw that...unless that was all in my head.
#AskEck This question ties in with the one from this episode. If Eta-2 starfighters are only piloted by jedi and not clones, why does a standard Venator carry around 192 of them, when they could just use about 10 Eta-2 and fill the space with ARC-170 or V-wings?
The scene of the Death Star trench when Krennic departs, clearly does show a docked Imperial Star Destroyer. However, after reading all the technical companions and guides, it stated nothing larger than a Strike Cruiser was carried. Food for thought.
A space station of that size would probably require massive ships to ferry supplies and crew back and forth. You would probably want to carry around several large transport ships in case you have need of them for supplies, to transfer troops, to aid in a large scale evacuation from the Death Star or to the Death Star. It wouldn't be a large stretch to design into the Death Start the ability to provide hangars and docking for Star Destroyer sized ships.
I always thought the sheer scale of the Death Star was a bit hard to swallow. A 120-km sphere would have an absolutely massive volume and mass, far more than would be required for housing a planet-killing weapon. Even cutting it down to 60km would still be utterly gargantuan, and I don't think even a mobile shipyard would be enough to justify that kind of size.
Honestly for a station as big as the Death Star I think ISD sized docks would be necessary. Even if it didn’t have an escort fleet I think you’d need them just for the operation of the station. I mean think about how much stuff probably has to go in and out of the station every single day. Trying to move all those materials and assets exclusively with small transports would be a logistical nightmare. In addition to a defensive fleet around the station there probably is an enormous fleet of cargo carriers constantly coming and going around the clock. Even with all the hangars we see on the station I’d imagine that most ships would be under a lot of pressure to move their cargo as quickly as possible and undock for the next ship to come in. Thinking about it now getting the station ready for hyperspace would be quite the involved and disruptive process. You’d have to communicate with hundreds of ships. Once a hyperspace route was chosen you’d have to clear out every ship from the station’s path. You’d have to reroute or reschedule who knows how many arrivals and departures. Just getting the station ready for hyperspace would probably take at least a few hours. And the fact that Darth Vader can dock his ISD whenever he wants for however long he wants is just another demonstration of how much authority he commands.
When I was a kid, you know every kid goes utterly insane with their creations? I used to imagine a death star so insanely big it would have a ring of super destroyers docked all around it
From the very first Star Wars, I always thought that The Death Star would act as a fully functioning replacement for planetary assets. It would have dry docks and everything for the repair of ISDs, even potential to build one from scartch. Rec spaces for crews, etc.
The empires lack of widespread implementation of dedicated flak frigates is one of their most glaring oversights. Compared to the cost of an Imp class adding a pair of raiders for CIWS duty would have paid in dividends far beyond the expenses of their operation.
There is actually a level on the PSP version of the force unleash when you first board the DS and you can see ISDs docked with the station’s internal superstructure as you are advancing through the external walkways. As for the station’s ability to carry a fleet inside, I think it’s actually very possible that the DS could at the very least carry and support an escort fleet if not a larger battle group given its sheer size. If so it elevates the strategic value and impact of the DS that’s stops been just a planet killer and also becomes a gigantic assault platform.
#AskEck Hello there, I've been wondering some stuff for a few days now regarding hyperspace, hopefully you are able to help me clear my doubts So in The Last Jedi we learned that ramming at a ship through hyperspace is actually possible, but that jump was aimed directly to cause the impact. I know as well that for hyperspace jumps the calculations are done first based on known star maps in order to avoid crashing because of getting trapped in a stellar object's gravity Let's assume we have a ship that made a normal jump. First, if there's a large enough uncharted object like let's say a meteor or an abandoned ship's debris, if you go through it's path would you crash with it? Second, let's say you cross paths with one of the major lanes, could you crash with another ship passing by through hyperspace? Lastly, remember that Star Trek scene from Into Darkness where the Vengeance caught up with the Enterprise because it had a better Warp capabilities. Could something like that happen in hyperspace as well if a ship with let's say a class 1.5 hyperdrive makes a jump and shortly after another ship with a class 1 hyperdrive follows it?
It's supposed to be a "station" so like Space Dock in Star Trek I see it making sense for refit/resupply/shore leave for Star ships. Something so big would make sense to be the hub of the large battle fleet that would be needed to escort it.
Yes, DS1 has shipyard capabilities but its not a dedicated shipyard, that job is left to orbital shipyard with the logistical infrastructure to supply it. Very likely the DS will do refits and resupply since its intended to be a mobile battle station and the capital ship docks hold its defense fleet ready to launch

Still going.
Cylons vs UNSC.
Also just Halo content in general.
Yes
1: If capital ships can make hyperspace jumps with fighters docked in their hangars, the Death Star should certainly be capable of the same even with Star Destroyers.
2: I don't feel that "indirect kills" should count for a pilot's total. Isn't taking down a Death Star enough of an achievement? :D
3: I could see the Death Star's massive hangars being able to repair and resupply capital ships, but building a whole vessel from scratch is probably outside the scope of the station. I'd actually be curious to know how self-sufficient the Death Star was intended to be. The amount of materials and components needed just to maintain the thing has to be absolutely staggering.
If you played Empire At War (The original, not FoC) You'd see it has a fleet of Star Destroyers in that game
I believe that in both games, it comes with population limit-free ISDs, and VCDs.
#AskEck can u do Androids/Cyborgs compare?
Cylons
Cyberlife
Institute
Skynet
Cylons, Skynet, Tyrell Corp, and Weyland-Yutani would be cooler
Godzilla Boi don’t forget the good old geth
Love that SWTOR intro going in the background @2:42! Nice Ecks...👍
This is really cool, just awesome how these new things are discoverd even after 3 years!
Type-47A(H2) scarab vs type-47B(H3,reach,odst) scarab vs Banished scarab vs Volatile scarab
Imagine if there was a whole fleet of SDs and support ships docked inside, and deployed during the fourth movie.
I don't think even Luke could've gotten through that...
I haven't seen your other channel but from the reference in this video I like the idea. It's more engaging. Kudos muchacho
Makes sense. Iserlohrn Fortress from Legend of Galactic Heroes is of similar size and power to DS, though not mobile. It’s essentially a full service naval base capable of servicing its organic defense fleet.
Though 20,000 ships under Yang Wen-li would crush the empire.
Doesn't that contradict the rivalry between the advocators of a strong fleet
and the advocators of the Death Star?
Perhaps it was a compromise to try and please both sides.
That’s so cool! I’d never even considered that it could carry ISD’s but it makes perfect sense!

I don't know if you made a video on it
#AskEck how did both the Jedi and Sith originate? How did they get their ideals and philosophies
That is a very interesting idea.
I love your outro and above all the best videos
Huh, I never noticed that scene in Rogue One. That makes a lot of sense actually.
Eck, could you do some analyzing of Knightmare Frames?
Was pretty strongly implied in A New Hope too, you see the ISD flying right towards it not angling off to make orbit or anything.
I've never noticed that Star Destroyer docked with the Death Star in Rogue One, thanks for pointing that out! That's awesome!
It wouldn't surprise me if the Death Star could dock one or more Executor SSD's.
Wow I just saw this today when I searched for "drydock star wars"
Great you made a video about it!
Love your videos! Is there any chance you could do a Fallout topic such as discussing Mr House, the institute, the NCR etc etc?
Thank you, EckhartsLadder.
I agree, it would have made sense to have a shipyard built into the death star, or at the very least, just hangers for a support fleet
Awesome find. Thanks for the video.
That actually makes sense especially for the Tarkin Doctrine.
I remember the old book that said that the death star didn’t just have big star destroyer hangers, it’s actually a dry dock, yup they are manufacturing star destroyers in there as well
That’s...brilliant honestly. A space station with hangars for Star Destroyers and a super weapon!
when the death star goes into hyperspace all support ships including many star destroyers dock within the death stars shell therefore saving fuel and also allowing for huge assault on any target .repairs and arming can take place during transit and also allowing crews some rest and relaxation time with friends and family who lived and worked full time on the death star .
This explains why there were no ISDs at the assault on the first Death Star
So the Death Star does have some use, at least.
I had never thought of it before reading lost stars, but when I did, I did make the correct assumption that they docked to an internal bay.
There was some Legends artwork of an ISD being built/repaired at a DS.
It was a mobile shipyard and naval base. It could support a fleet of Star Destroyers allowing the Death Star to dominate a sector without showing its self
#AskEck
Can you talk about our lord and saivor: The Halo Valiant Class Superheavy Cruiser/BattleCruiser?
An you had to know such scenarios kept Rebel Leadership awake at night for years
Honestly, it is actually explains why there was no fleet at Yavin. They were docked within the Death Star and Tarkin was too arrogant to deploy them
Space battleship Yamato vs death star.
Wave Motion Gun would slice right through the Death Star like it wasn't even there....
Happy Easter 2021!!!
That's so easy I'll do it... it takes about 191 destroyed ETA-2 for a Jedi commander to actually die. They are very good at surviving.
The UNSC Infinity could a few big ass ships in it as well :)) oh my god you mentioned it in the video too as I was typing this NAISUU
The Infinity is one of my favorite ships in Halo! I fantasized when those frigates deployed from their hangars.
One sharp eye you got there Eck! 👁️👍

Thank you! I asked this of several sw youtubers a while back and no one had an answer.
I used to imagine a death star so insanely big it would have a ring of super destroyers docked all around it
Makes perfect sense! It is a moon-sized space station/super weapon after all.
Sweet educational video!
From the very first Star Wars, I always thought that The Death Star would act as a fully functioning replacement for planetary assets. It would have dry docks and everything for the repair of ISDs, even potential to build one from scartch. Rec spaces for crews, etc.
Great video! #AskEck When will the Versus videos make a return?
The empires lack of widespread implementation of dedicated flak frigates is one of their most glaring oversights. Compared to the cost of an Imp class adding a pair of raiders for CIWS duty would have paid in dividends far beyond the expenses of their operation.
Lost stars! Glad to see that book getting recognized it’s way underrated
#AskEck Hello there, I've been wondering some stuff for a few days now regarding hyperspace, hopefully you are able to help me clear my doubts
So in The Last Jedi we learned that ramming at a ship through hyperspace is actually possible, but that jump was aimed directly to cause the impact. I know as well that for hyperspace jumps the calculations are done first based on known star maps in order to avoid crashing because of getting trapped in a stellar object's gravity
Let's assume we have a ship that made a normal jump.
Damn a Death Star in every sector, crazy.
