Between filming the crew took Hawking on a tour of the various sets. On the engineering deck set he stopped next to the warp core engine, smiled and said "I'm working on that!"
chase1146 He was breathing so hard and heavy that the crew called in an EMT unit, thinking he was going into shock-but really he was just that worked up to be there.
I'm curious to know what he thought of ST:DS9, and ST:Discovery. Not to mention The Expanse, which is probably our clearest window of near-future space flight.
Star trek is not about space fights. Its about the unlimited possible life forms and natural wonders that space holds for humanity. I am pretty sure Hawking liked it for the scientific creativity and various content about space phenomenons. Star trek is not some crappy space action movie like star wars.
Professor Hawking's body was a like a prison for him but his mind was free to explore the cosmos with mathematics. What a brilliant mind it was. He will be missed.
Professor Hawking may have departed Earth in 2018 but he will live on through the work he left behind and his impact on popular culture. I believe this is footage of his visit to the 24th Century. Boldly Go!
The key ingredient for warp drives is just negative mass. Perhaps someone reading this can one day prove it is possible to even create negative mass. Do so and you will be able to explore the stars within a lifetime.
cogent prankster He's actually been offered more modern software that would be able to generate a voice closer to his own, but has refused, saying he identifies with the artificial voice of his current apparatus.
Annnnnnnnnnnnd i became a kid again instantly :D seriously the guys who did the dialogue nailed Issac's anti-social behavior and Einstein's easy going nature (in public). When Einstein got the bet wrong, that jab from Issac could not be more well placed
Behind scenes story, when dr hawking was on the set to shoot this appearance, he passed by a large prop for the show. He asked what it was and the crew said it was the warp engine. He said “oh we’re working on that”
David T: He also confronted Brent Spinner a year later in the studio lot and ask Him where His money was, in which Brent Spinner replied: "Check is in the mail." LOL!!
It's a good lesson not to put things off. I missed out on meeting Leonard Nimoy too. :-( But at least I will get to meet William Shatner this summer at Supercon!
It is always quite funny to see somebody play himself, and when I heard of Hawking's death this morning for some reason I had to look the particular scene up. The world has lost one of its greatest scientists today...
Stephen Hawking is a national treasure to Society. it sucks that he never received a Nobel prize, but we all know how important he is in the history of science. Even though he was an atheist I Always loved him and I believe he was a great man.
I've been watching this repeatedly since yesterday morning. It inspires me to dry my abundant tears and try to smile as brightly as the incredible man of stars, Stephen Hawking.
Wow ,what an absolute treat, the illustrious John Neville plays Newton! As anyone who remembers the amazing 1968 mini series The First Churchills will attest he played John Churchill ,Duke of Marlborough to a tee.an amazing actor who just looked so good in a wig, evidently the star trek producers agreed. The first Churchills is on TH-cam,check it out to see him in his glorious wig once more :)
Such a shame Stephen Hawking never got to have a cameo in Doctor Who too as Star Trek and Doctor Who are two ongoing sci-fi franchises that both started in the 60s.
He rests in the stars now. What an incredible mind, a mind we will as a species will miss greatly, his insight and outlook on life was unmatched. I'll always track my love for the universe back to this man. Rest in peace my friend.
Thumbs up if you’re here to remember him as he lived and miss him very much, we’ll never forget him but at least we are blessed to have gotten to appreciate him while he was still on this earth. R.I.P. Steven.
When I watched this as a kid, I didn't know who Professor Hawking was at the time. Perhpas he really is playing poker up in the stars with other great minds. Rock in peace, Professor.
What’s great about this is that Stephen doesn’t mind acting casual. The banter between him and the actors playing Newton and Einstein is hysterical and not forced at all. Based on all the stories, he was probably really excited to do it too.
Something really great about this that a lot of people don’t realize: It portrays Newton accurately. He was an unfriendly, humorless, disagreeable, arrogant jerk who’s colleagues hated him!
The actor playing Albert Einstein kinda looks like Emperor Palpatine with big hair and sedate clothing. He also got to meet Dr. Hawking in person. How cool is that?
When you compare this appearance to his appearance on the Big Bang Theory (also a gem), you can see how his disease progressed. I loved his big smile here; he wasn't able to do that with Sheldon, but he never lost his sense of humor. RIP Dr. Hawking.
This makes Stephen Hawking the only person in history to play himself on an episode of Star Trek.
Maybe, but to this day I think James Tiberius Kirk is a real person and William Shatner is just a codename he uses in his civilian life.
Phil H except he's not really playing himself he's playing a holographic reacreation of himself
Close enough.
well, any other there is not even playing a holographic version of himself.
@@canaan5337 Ouch! What a brilliant technical shenanigan! You win this round
That may just be the biggest smile I've ever seen Mr. Hawking give.
I dunno, he gave a pretty proud grin when he told John Oliver there was potentially an alternate universe in which he was funny.
He had a great sense of humor.
Then laughs in triumph
Look at him in 0 gravity.
That was his biggest smile
Steve Son the photo of him floating is better
And Stephen dies right on Einstein's birthday... And both died at 76.
Gui Porto really?
Wow...speaking about simularities 🤔
Wow! Spooky or fantanstic?
Intriguing. Also reddit brought me here: www.reddit.com/r/space/comments/84aehn/breaking_steven_hawking_has_died_at_age_76/dvo7wul/
Rest in peace Mr Hawkins. Godspeed on your next journey.
Between filming the crew took Hawking on a tour of the various sets. On the engineering deck set he stopped next to the warp core engine, smiled and said "I'm working on that!"
Thats cool lol
It would be cool if Stephen could create a warp engine that would launch mankind into the starts.
William Fraser I wanna visit the starts so bad.
He wasn't working on it, and he didn't create it.
fjvideo he died
Stephen Hawking has the world's best poker face.
True. He made this one of the most memorable scene from TNG. RIP Mr Hawking.
teiladnam no wonder einstein lost.
""world's best poker face"" weather he wanted it that way or not. ;)
Jajaja
I don't know, that enormous grin at the end seems like it could be a pretty big tell
apperently this was one of stephen hawkings favorite shows at the time, so i guess he was having an awesome time doing this
chase1146 He was breathing so hard and heavy that the crew called in an EMT unit, thinking he was going into shock-but really he was just that worked up to be there.

@@mctixe7792 you mean star Wars sir?

The actor who played Stephen Hawking was very convincing...
Lol!
Irony?
It was really him, rest his soul.
RichardAndewSwayne that the real deal
Kaleb Levermore-Rich I know.
I'd like to think that the three of them are doing this now, somewhere beyond the universe
I don't think I imagine anything more nerdy, or awesome.
YEP!👍
Professor Hawking may have departed Earth in 2018 but he will live on through the work he left behind and his impact on popular culture. I believe this is footage of his visit to the 24th Century. Boldly Go!
Engage!!!
When Professor Hawking went on a tour of the set & saw the warp core he said "Working on it"
will someone PLEASE pick up where the good Dr. left off!
Well. the problem is not the technique - we know how to bend space. But how to make such great energy to be able to.
The key ingredient for warp drives is just negative mass.
Perhaps someone reading this can one day prove it is possible to even create negative mass. Do so and you will be able to explore the stars within a lifetime.
stephen Hawking has a great sense of humour, the fact that he cannot pass it through his voice tone anymore is kinda sad
Don't worry, he's British. Deadpan is kind of our thing.
cogent prankster He's actually been offered more modern software that would be able to generate a voice closer to his own, but has refused, saying he identifies with the artificial voice of his current apparatus.

"Not the apple story again." XD
Farewell, Stephen Hawking. May you kick intellectual ass in the afterlife and have many a poker games with Einstein and Newton.
There is no afterlife.

A brilliant and inspirational man. RIP Stephen Hawking.
Was watching some TNG last night before finding out about Hawking, I remembered he was on an episode so I looked this up. Good stuff.
It's really nice to see that he got this true honor to play himself as the only person in the total series. R.I.P.
This must be quite possibly the best scenes in all of Star Trek TNG history. RIP Dr. Hawking.

I wonder if Hawkings iconic chair will end up in a museum!

RIP Stephen, one of the greatest minds to go down in history, may he inspire greater minds to spire forth in the future
I love this. Data is the best
Something about Stephens smug smile at the end always makes me laugh
one of many, many reasons why TNG is easily one of the best series of all time
As far as I know, he's the only person to EVER play himself on Star Trek.
Not to nitpick, but technically Professor Hawking doesn't play himself in this episode, but a Computer Hologram of himself.
One of the most beautiful minds in this world has passed away... :(
¡Vaya con Dios Sr. Hawking!
Rest in Peace, Dr. Stephen Hawking.

Stephen looks so happy in this video omg 😭 😃
