For those who didn'tunderstand the ending:- Shushila Didn't realise that her husband could be behind the mob attack and as she was suffering from Stockholm syndrome (google it) she took the side with viahvam who sympathies with her... On the top of mountain she realised the big mistake she had done seeing the death of her own she wanted to rejoin with her son but too late... She never knew about the hardship her husband went through but seeing him in the temple when he did not ask for her return... She started hating her husband for not doing enough to save her dignity... So in the end she decided to die ... But wished for a life only because of her son but as explained it was too late for her to come back as she ran away with vishwam.

Yes I saw in 75' then 20 more times , then today also still cannot figure out the ending. Killing Soon was not justifiable, she was the pujari's daughter ,,some scene was cut . Many scenes censored. Sad Smita is gone in real . First time I saw , I was shock for the scene took many months to forget , she layed there. And who really stole from the mandir ,, maybe scene cut too? Cannot remember.

The audience is left on tenterhooks at the end. Will the villagers take the life of Susheela too since she now belongs to the Zamindari house ? The silent resentment lying dormant in the minds of the villagers has been suddenly released and they are baying for the blood of their oppressors. The film burns itself into our soul and we can never forget the helpless plight of the schoolmaster whose loving wife has been taken away from him leaving his child orphaned.
