I saw the movie in B&W many, many years ago. The song wasn’t translated or subtitled but the melody and certainly the sexy Latin rhythm of it intrigued me. Since then, I’ve heard it sung in English and read the translated Portuguese lyric. Then about 12 years ago, I learned to play both the rhythm in Am and the melody in chord form in Am on the Spanish guitar. It has been one of my life’s most grateful accomplishments to have achieved that level of expertise.
I must confess: does anyone have a good reason for the movie and song in Portuguese are Manhā de Carnaval (Morning of Carnival) but in English that became Black Orpheus? Is it because North American film goers of the early 1960’s were considered incapable of divining the character and plot development throughout the flick? Was it the Greek connection in the plot? Oh well, we can be thankful for the movie because it was a major platform for introducing Bossa Nova music to the world and the evolutionary melodic stylings of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá.
