It really does! I still love playing the first Alice, for the same reason, but they really expanded upon the maps and levels in Madness Returns :-D

Agreed! Soo good! Luckily it still runs great on both Steam & EA, and it's from the last generation of console where you can actually install it from physical media with no internet required :-)

That'd be a good fit, but EA has blocked anyone from working on the IP. Absolutely dumb. If they don't wanna fund it, fine, but let someone else buy the IP and do something with it!!!

I can see the reason behind this since they were able to take the story of Pinnochio and make it into a souls-like game
I just hope they don't make this series into souls-like if they ever somehow do get the rights to the IP but more of how it already is except that the combat is more polished and thought out(from what I've seen from discussion pages about this games combat being a hit or miss)
I'm probably gonna play this game at some point, which is why I research discussions
@@motivatedstorm3816 the combat in Alice 1 & 2 is ok, but it was never amazing. It was always more about the environments, stories, and platform-puzzles. So I wouldn't mind if another company changed the combat significantly... that said, yeah I don't think a souls-like style is the right fit.
At the very least Alice in Wonderland (The original books) is Public Domain.
We may not be able to get more of American McGee's Alice, but hopefully once Neowiz has finished their Lies of P DLC and Wizard of Oz (Assuming they follow up on that tease) the can at least create a spiritual successor to American McGee's Alice.

That's a great point! It's one of those games where you can just be in the menu and already you're happy because of the rich and layered game music!

Once I switched to Caterpillar it was so hard to go back to anything else. I honestly hated shrinking to check for hidden paths or hints, it just saved so much time to have it already showing lol
I agree! I hate possibly missing a secret, so I was constantly shrinking/unshrinking and it felt disruptive to the gameplay. The caterpillar lets me play more normally and quells my paranoia :-D
Alice is the most stylish VG character PERIOD
You may be right, but I imagine several people would fight you over this (especially JRPG fans). But I def prefer the style of Alice, and her entire world, over a JRPG

I completely agree. No only did they do American McGee dirty, but they took a big dump on all their fans by not just refusing to fund development of Alice Asylum, but also refusing to let him go elsewhere for funding. Why EA? Why?
At a min, they could have kept the IP and said "ok, go find funding. Make the game. We'll do nothing but sit around, and then just give us 10% because we own the IP."
I mean, how easy would that have been, EA?!?
this game is my favorite horror game ever, so sad that EA doesn't want to allow the new game to be made (there is a 500-ish page concept art book that looks ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, i still can't get over the fact the new game is cancelled. I hope someone in the future can continue this fight with EA and eventually win, so this project can see the light of day).

Yeah, American McGee claims he's 100% done since EA blocked him. I think our best hope at this point is an indie studio making a spiritual successor... which could be good. Just so frustrating when the formula for success was dropped at EA's feet and not only did they say no, but then they blocked American from doing it anywhere else :-(
Thank you for spreading the word about Alice and not letting such a masterpiece be forgotten. It might contribute to the series being somehow continued. I hope I’ll see a new game inspired by it in my lifetime
Yeah, I definitely want the younger generation of gamers to know about this game. It is such an amazing game! The first one from 2000 was also amazing, in its own right.
Fingers crossed someone takes up the mantle and manages to make a phenomenal new installment in the series, despite the MANY hurdles EA is putting in the way :-/
love this game a lot jus wish some of the chapters were a little shorter
I love this game so much! I can understand that point of view. A few levels do get a little tedious, but I just enjoy the world so much that I don't mind playing around in it, even when it's a little slow (like the Octopus hide and seek)

I am just listening and admiring how the dresses and the character look stunning. Looking past the nut bar that she is, Alice has a beautiful design.
They did amazing with the character design, and the dresses are equally awesome. I always love when you can feel that the devs/artists weren't rushed and they put some extra love into it :-D

I remember playing the older version of this back when I was 15 or 18. Maybe even 13 😂 Now I'm playing this version and to this day, I'm still obssessed eveb years has passed 😂 Its a beautiful game. I want another one 😢😢
Yeah, I played it back in 2010 when it was new, and I've loved it ever since! Such a fantastic game with amazing art, puzzles, and story!

You can see some of it in the design bible they made. They really had a lot of the outlining done. All the more reason it's so sad EA squashed it :-(

I heard the game is long, is this true? Also how do you collect all the dresses? Is it a tough game to beat? I'm learning more about it
It's a medium sized game. If you just booked through it, you could probably knock it out in about 12 hours. If you want to find all the hidden hog snouts, collect all the memories, and get a bunch of teeth to buy all the upgrades, then you are looking at more like 24 hours probably.
You can choose your difficulty. If you just want to experience the world and puzzles, easy mode is the way to go. It isn't so easy that it will be boring, but the enemies won't kill you very often. Normal mode you will die a few times, especially to bosses, but it still feels pretty fair. It also lets you switch on the fly, so I'd go with Hard, see how it feels, and then you can always bump it down if it feels too hard. The puzzles are the same in all modes though, and the puzzles are excellent, so you'll get that experience in any mode.
If you play the original game though, the difficulty is much harder, so be warned!

How do you get the other dresses like the Cheshire cat dress, caterpillar dress and the other cool ones?

What will downloading the content do?
Unfortunately, I don't believe you can get these on Xbox anymore as the DLC is no longer offered.
In theory, if you could edit the INI file on the Xbox, it should work... but you'd have to have a hacked Xbox that allows you to edit files.
Not really feasible. So this is limited to PC gamers, sorry

You change her dress at will? I started playing and suddenly her dress changed wgen i got into the next area.
There are areas where she is supposed to have specific dresses, but after you've beaten the game, the DLC setting lets you wear any dress on any level.
Can you play this game on a laptop? Or does it have to be PC? I really wanna play but it’s not on ps4 :/
It'll play fine on a laptop. It came out in 2010, so as long ad your laptop is newer than about 2015, it should run awesome.
It won't play on a chromebook though (not without streaming from a desktop)

They did an excellent job! Even back in the first Alice game from 2000, the art was phenomenal, and the character design, and even just some of the walls and textures.
Definitely a franchise where artists got to really express themselves :-D

Yeah, you can actually change the power and stats of weapons in the config files too, so you can experiment with your own custom levels of power and special abilities.

Haha, I agree with your semantics, but these items were sold as DLC for the original game. It was implied they were being downloaded, but sneaky file inspectors like me realized the files were there all along ;)

Yes, but I think the Silk Maiden might make even more teeth drop, so if you are good at fighting in the game and don't need the roses, then maybe you want the Silk Maiden for more teeth for weapons upgrades.

Agreed on both counts! Love that they each have intriguing powers.
Alice Asylum had a built in audience, and McGee was willing to crowd fund it and still pay EA their freaking dues so they didn't have to risk a thing... and they just blocked him completely. Sounds like a personal vendetta to me, if they are willing to lose money for no reason :-(

It's upsetting knowing that there will never be an Alice sequel. Wish i could say i'm keeping my fingers crossed but realistically American Mcgee has also retired from game development.
I did see a video from Mcgee making it clear that he's terrified of being sued by EA if he even just talks too much about Alice. In it, he explains that really the only chance would be a fan-made sequel (he suggested with heavy leaning on AI) that could bypass the problems if it wasn't being sold and making money.
It's beyond my talent, but hopefully some skilled people take up the mantle.

Unfortunately no. I'm fairly certain it used to have the DLC, but it's been years since they removed it from the store. But, the files are there, you just have to enable it. In the full video, I go over how to force Steam to let you have it... but it's recently been failing for a lot of users, so it doesn't work for everyone:

But people have been saying it isn't always working anymore. In the description of that video I added another INI change that helps some people.
The summary is this though:
- Enable DLC in AliceEngine.ini
- Get a 100% save file if you aren't far in the game
- Should be able to equip it from the main menu with the "equip" button that opens another screen (have to select with arrows though, not with mouse)
- If that doesn't work, try editing DefaultInput.ini and adding the key bindings listed in the description of that video
This was the time when you can't acquire whole game by just buying the game. 😂

While some of the dresses will occur automatically in certain levels, many are locked behind DLC.

Weird as shit seeing this game brought back up again. I'm not necessarily on the Internet all that much right now. Did fans start trying to make Asylum yet? I heard something about that I thought.
I hadn't heard about a fan movement for Alice Asylum, but I hope they do. After all, McGee already made a design bible for Asylum, so there is a decent amount to base it on
