multipoint lock replacement

  • multipoint locks are now very common and are often fitted to most types of doors including PVC doors, patio doors and even wooden doors. Replacing a multipoint lock can be a difficult job if the door lock fails in the closed position. In this example I was lucky and managed to open the door in order to replace the lock. The cost of a full lock was £50 from my local locksmith who ensured I got the exact right model and also trimmed it to the correct length. If your multipoint door lock fails your door will not unlock and the door will not lock so this job needs doing urgently. Brought to you by www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk

    Thanks, the Euro cylinders are Yale and I'm sure they are supposed to be anti-snap, anti-drill, anti-pick and anti-bump.

    Outstanding video. I have a 10 yr old Larson Secure Elegance door with multipoint lock that needs replacement since it's worn and now jammed. I'm clueless when it comes to this sort of thing. Thanks to your video and help from Larson Support, I ordered the entire lockset which looks similar to yours, as it's a 3 point lock unit. Now that I've viewed your detailed video, I can tackle this DIY task with confidence. Many thanks from the USA to my new amigo on the other side of the Pond. Have a great week!

    I didn't need to replace the whole gearbox but took it off cleaned it up and lubricated it (graphite spray) and it was working properly again.
    Finding a replacement gearbox nearby isn't easy mostly looking at ordering online and delivery worth bearing in mind

      I'm not a locksmith but it sounds like the internal springs may be worn out or broken. None of the multipoint lock handles that I have seen have built in springs so it's all done by the multipoint lock, It may be possible to replace the spring part but it's probably better to replace the whole lock as other components might also be wearing out.

    I've changed a euro cylinder lock in a 3 point locking UPVC door as the door was second hand and didn't have a lock. The securing pin that secures the cylinder in place does not have a countersink in the edge of the door and with the pin/screw in place i'm unable to lift the handle to engage the top and bottom shoot bolts as the pin seems to be fouling the sliders. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Thanks

    Same thing happened to me, had my multi lock mechanism changed twice, problems with lock occur when doors locked and you check if locked by pushing handles down, somehow pushing the handles to check creates this problem ( pressure ? ) do not pull handles hard, push softly on handles when checking folks

      No, I got the replacement from my local locksmith's shop.
      You can get them online, but it's critical that you measure it and get the correct one.
      Screwfix do sell a Yale universal multipoint lock which should fit most doors providing you get the correct gearbox size.

    Are there any of these types of doors that have hidden retaining screws holding the cylinder in place ? if not then maybe the head has snapped off on ours - as we don't appear to have a retaining screw.

      Yes, I'm sure that on my French doors at the rear of the property, one door had the screw showing, but the other one was hidden behind a piece of plastic. I had to drill a hole through the plastic, before I could access the screw.

    mechanisms needs oiling or greasing from time to time?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I normally give it a wipe with a lint free cloth and then give it a spray with some silicone spray. I never use oil or grease though as that can attract dust etc. and gunk up the mechanism.

  • @jackflash8756
    @jackflash8756 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't unlock my uvpc multilock door. The key turns a bit and then it jams. I used to have to forcibly lift the handle to get the key to turn but obviously the internal mechanism is now broke and won't unlock. I'm interested to know how you got that door unlocked because I think I will have to break the barrel, take it out, and then somehow try and flick open the internal locking mechanism.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine was already unlocked when the gearbox failed (thankfully).
      I did read that you can get to the lock mechanism, but you have to de-glaze the door. I’m afraid it is something that I have never done 👍

    • @jackflash8756
      @jackflash8756 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen a video where you take the handles off, break the barrel and then remove it. There is some latch (I think one calls it a CAM) situated at the top above where the barrel used to be, that needs to be shifted to one side using an allen key. Once shifted , the door should unlock. Personally , I think my door has tilted a bit and now the lock is stuck. Even lifting the door a bit by forcing up the handle is still not enough to allow the key to rotate and unlock the door.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve done a video on lock snapping, but that is only useful if you don’t have the key for the door. If the gearbox is broken, you can’t open the door. Even if you snap the lock and use the Allen key to turn the cam- you still won’t be able to open the door, as the gearbox will not move the lock bolts.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it depends if the gearbox can be detached from the rest of the mechanism by screws, my lock was riveted together and so I just got a full multipoint lock. Some of them can be separated into separate components though, which would make it possible to replace just the gear box.
      Perhaps if you split the lock by removing the screws and try the handles you might be able to see which part is faulty?

    • @cardiffpicker1
      @cardiffpicker1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      super man if the gearbox can be removed take it of and operate the driver bars on the back of the mpl by hand if all the hooks and rollers operate smothly then the gearbox is fucked.
      i wouldnt trust using the handles on the removed gearbox alone as quite often it will operate on its own but fail under load.

    Would it be possible to secure the door shut somehow? I suspect the gearbox has gone for a family friend's door (or very close to failing entirely) as she has to lift the handle to unlock the door, but it might be a few days to find an exact replacement and install it and I would imagine if I took the old gearbox or even the whole multipoint lock to get the specs, that even a handle lock made from wood that I've seen in one of your videos would not work.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would not remove the gearbox and then close the door, as the shoot bolt might drop- then you'll have a real problem opening the door.
      Most locksmiths have these in stock, I've changed about three recently, I just take the whole multi point lock out and my local locksmiths shop (Rostrons in Darwen), will either sell me a full unit, or replace the gearbox, depending on the make.
