@ Seamus Hogan 5 years ? We Australians, whose forebears paid for their voyages and took on 3 - 4 months on the high seas, no certainty of survival. It's the sentiment of the song, not the quality of the voice.
There's just nothing like incorporating the spirit of this song as visiting Ireland and Scotland, as I did last year. To realize numerous great grandparents made that perilous journey across the waves never to return to the land of their birth was more than poignant. I felt as if I had returned in their place.
For all my 60 year plastic paddyness, I only discovered Brendan's "Orphan Girl" a couple of years ago during the lockdowns. 7 of my 8 Great Grand Parents emigrated between 1848 and 1853. You can read 'til the cows come home but nothing brings it home like a song. Benedicere, Laudare, Praedicare Brendan
This is brilliant. I have a friend who performed this at my local folk song club recently. I went home sobbing. (Tears are good!) I researched the song and the social history, and found this wonderful recording. I still strive to retrieve my emotional continence. Very many thanks for posting this.
when I first heard this song, it brought tears to my eyes.....it could have been written about my grandma, it so much reminded me of her being so young and alone, coming to Canada
The best rendition I've found. The cadence is excellent, much better than the slow, tedious funeral dirge by others.
Gros bisous à tous les apprentis qui vont écoute ce son avant le bac ❤️❤️
Kinda interesting to hear about events that led to my existence. Thanks for leaving great grandparents.
To all the people that had to leave good bless ye all Ireland is still there god bless never forget tour roots whats every you situation 😘🇨🇮
Irelands finest voice, what a waste he wasn't discovered by a worldwide audience which he truly deserves
