  • This is the final song from our Forge Sessions series. 'Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears'.
In the past two years the band have spent a bit of time in the states, particularly in New York. We've made a lot of great friends and played to some brilliant audiences, and it was during our last visit we felt inspired to take on the challenge of working on this amazing song.
The reaction we've got from the Forge Sessions videos have been overwhelming! Thanks to everyone who has already liked and shared 'The Town I Loved So Well' and 'Spanish Lady'. We hope you enjoy our latest & final video in this series,

I live in Ireland but this breaks my heart 💔 I could never imagine leaving this isle but back then, people were in desperate circumstances and travelled to the unknown… all they could do was hope it was better. No internet and trip advisors then. God bless them all ❤

@irisheyes "I live in Ireland but this breaks my h..." There are those who left and those who stayed. Of the overwhelming majority who went to the North Americas, some returned even if for holidays. Those who went to Australasia, there was no way back, one 3 - 4 month trip by sea was enough. Sean Keane's voice is perfect for modern Irish music

@irisheyes "I live in Ireland but this..." Believe me, the Famine escapees, particularly their descendents in both the North Americas and Australasia, survived, established communities with your values, made their marks and formed the cultures of both their hemispheres, so strongly that consequentially, that of the World. The British Empire might have disappeared but the Irish Influence hasn't and won't. I still maintain that the raison d'etre of the Republic is an gorta mor rather than the Uprising.

Great song! I'm mostly of Irish heritage from primarily East Galway, with North Kerry, Limerick, Mayo and Waterford. I've had ancestors come from Ireland from different times in the 19th century and they all married either Irish-Americans or other Irish immagrants. One fact remains, their love for their heritage. Their love for the land of their forefathers. I'm proud of my green blood and so thankful for their sacrifices that went before me.

awesome job guys, love this song , so much meaning and a great tribute to those who came before us. much of my family history is from Ireland, O'Keefe from county Tipperary and Ducey from Dungarvin, they settled in Newfoundland but never the less left Ireland due to hardship with hope for a better future. They passed on the culture and here we are several generations on still carrying the love for our Irish history especially the love of the Irish music .

I'm very late comin' to the party, but now that I've heard them, I'm in love! Through a convoluted online search for a rendition of 'When You Were Sweet 16' that touched me, I came upon this voice . . . . this group, and it was settled. Their version, in my humble opinion, is by far the best I've heard. And then I listened to 'Isle of Hope' and through my tears the deal was sealed. This group and especially the lead singer, have a rare something that few groups ever achieve.

The seminal event in Irish history, reflected in its politics and casual reference, is the Easter Uprising. There's a fair argument that it should be the post Famine emigration, especially when it comes to the histories of the North Americas and Australasia and that's my take on it. My 8 Great Grandparents emigrated in the late 1840s and early 1850s but to the other side of the World. The beacon that the North Americas and, to a numerically lesser extent, Australasia offered to those poor souls is captured in my mind by the line "17 million people had come there for sanctuary". Thanks to them, we've had good lives. It's a toss up between Whistling Donkeys and Sean Keane's versions, both moving.

    [Couplet 1]
On the first day of January 1892
They opened Ellis Island and they let the people through
And the first to cross the threshold of that isle of hope and tears
Was Annie Moore from Ireland who was all of 15 years
Isle of hope, isle of tears
Isle of freedom, isle of fears
But it’s not they isle you left behind
That isle of hunger, isle of pain
    Isle you’ll never se again
But the isle of home is always on your mind
    [Couplet 2]
In a little bag, sur carried all her past and history
And her dreams for the future in the land of liberty
And courage is your passport when your old world disappears
But there’s no future in the past when you’re 15years
    Refrain
When they closed down Ellis Island in 1943
17 million people had come there for sanctuary
And in the springtime when I came here and stepped onto its piers
I throught of how it must have been when you’re 15 years
    Refrain

On the first day on January
    Eighteen ninety-two
    They opened ellis Island
And they let the people through
And the first to cross the treshold
Of that Isle of hope and tears
    Was Annie Moore from Ireland
    Who was only fifteen years
Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears
Isle of Freedom, Isle of Fears
But it's not the Isle you left behind
That Isle of Hunger, Isle of Pain
    Isle you'll never see again
But the Isle of home is always on your mind
In a little bag she carried
    All her past and history
And her dreams for the future
    In the Land of Liberty
    And courage is the passport
    When your old world disappears
But there's no future in the past
    When you're fifteen years
Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears
Isle of Freedom, Isle of Fears
But it's not the Isle you left behind
That Isle of Hunger, Isle of Pain
    Isle you'll never see again
But the Isle of home is always on your mind
When they closed down Ellis Island
    In Nineteen Fourty-Three
    Seventeen million people
    Had come there for Sanctuary
And in springtime when I came here
And I stepped onto it's piers
I thought of how it must have been
    When you're fifteen years
Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears
Isle of Freedom, Isle of Fears
But it's not the Isle you left behind
That Isle of Hunger, Isle of Pain
    Isle you'll never see again
But the Isle of home is always on your mind
Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears
Isle of Freedom, Isle of Fears
But it's not the Isle you left behind
That Isle of Hunger, Isle of Pain
    Isle you'll never see again
But the Isle of home is always on your mind

Shades of Sean Keane, but beautifully done. This is a phenomenal group.

Sean Keane had a distinctive voice and wonderful. This group goes a long way towards capturing the emotion of that time. Solid musicians and great vocals.
