None of them need to speak. Their music speaks for itself. I have always stated this...find me ONE band that did this kind of 180 degree turn and not only alienated pop music fans, but all of the sudden had people like Robert Fripp and Frank Zappa talking about how great they were.
"they start doin' that pretentious "Don't talk to me. I'm an artist" bullshit," Wtf? That's not MH at all! Hes just very introverted, hates the spotlight - has anyone even heard from him at all in the past 10 years??? Kurt Cobain hated giving interviews too: look at him, reached the top of the world, then killed himself: couldn't stand the attention. He just wanted to make music. All TRUE artists think that way - interviews are beside the point, it's all about the MUSIC. HOLLIS IS A GENIUS
@Leonel Deangelo thanks dude I just did that and found out my wife's been having an affair with another man. When she gets home from work me and her are gonna have a little talk, thanks for the help bro appreciate it 👍
This was in "Countdown" from dutch broadcaster VOO (Veronica) It's was a superficial broadcasting company, a "shallow" program with naive, simple-minded DJs/VJs
I think the agreement was to go, sing the song that was the single from the last album and retire, but... the presenter does not comply with this. In this program in previous years he had been asked uncomfortable questions, he was reluctant to give interviews and speak on these programs because they tried to ask him questions of a personal nature or they asked him silly questions, not related to music. Also, the host tells him he's a horrible guy because he doesn't want to talk. In 1986 the band said no more touring (they were being enslaved), no more interviews, no more TV shows, and no more single releases, but since the record was non-commercial, I read that by contract they were obligated to release this song and go to this nondescript program because they were very famous in the Netherlands and they had to go... but it's clear that he didn't want to talk, even less after having sung that emotional song and he behaved like that because I think he knew the type of questions they were going to ask him and he was not willing to talk about it. They could have tried to talk to Paul or Lee, but they knew Mark would be uncomfortable so they called him up, gave him a hard time, and laughed at him in public. He was shy, before he went out with dark glasses and withdrew or kept quiet, but after 1986 I think he was trying to be himself and not hide behind a serious man's mask, the reality was his shyness and he didn't know how to react.
I think it differs if you don't know the situation. A sit down interview is different to answering questions on stage, particularly in a foreign country.
Stupid interviewers, they think they're so cool when they embarrass and belittle people when the real geniuses here are the artists. Why on earth would they think that an interview on stage would be necessary is beyond me! I love Mark Hollis, his music, his voice.I did not need to know whether he could answer stupid questions onstage. So he was shy and introverted, so what!!! He was also a musical genius that made us have a slice of heaven and delight us with that beautiful music and unique voice.
If he told them he just wanted to play..why did the presenter try and get him to talk and cause a situation infront of the audience. The presenter should of said thank you to the band and kept it moving.
To me, there is a subtle difference between art and music. I use music to deliver messages/tell stories/give commentary, therefore I am not an artist. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Talk Talk, but I call it as I see it. If I go on a show in which the format involves giving a brief interview, I'd at least show the courtesy of answering a few simple questions. Cobain may have hated interviews, but I never saw him do something like that. I just found the whole display to be bit rude, is all.
Danish it's not ! But he says "Spraaksam" or how it is written, think that's "talkative" in Dutch. Some Dutch-speaking people can help maybe ? And yes we would like to see Mark back !
Adam Curry speaks with an "American tongue" because he is American. He was born in the D.C. Metro area and raised (mostly) in Holland. And it's not that Curry doesn't know a lot about music, he doesn't give a fuck and in this instance, I don't blame him. If I had a music talk show and everytime I tried to interview a guest, they start doin' that pretentious "Don't talk to me. I'm an artist" bullshit, I wouldn't give a fuck either.
None of them need to speak. Their music speaks for itself. I have always stated this...find me ONE band that did this kind of 180 degree turn and not only alienated pop music fans, but all of the sudden had people like Robert Fripp and Frank Zappa talking about how great they were.
^ Tabasco please
Radiohead
bunnyhead71 Radiohead with Kid A, but point taken.
this is so true :)
Did Zappa really praise the band?
I love the look on Lee's face like he's kind of embarassed so sweet
So cute
Love Lee Harris
Mark Hollis so sweet and shy!
Rest in Peace 💞
The host thinks Lee Harris (the drummer with the long hair) is Mark Hollis.
Love Talk Talk... you can tell Mark was nowhere near interested in achieving commercial success when they released Spirit of Eden.
