Good morning! My Mom and her best friend, who was also my 4-h leader, taught me how to sew when I was 9 years ago. I started by sewing clothing. When I got married and had my daughters, I made clothing for them, too, but I didn’t start making quilts until I retired. I discovered Pat, Kimberly Jolly, Donna Jordan, and Jenny Doan in 2020 and after that, my sewing room has become quite full of project bins and beautiful stacks of fabrics to be worked with. I also started my alterations business out of my home in my small rural farm town. So I spend a lot of time sewing these days. And I still LOVE it! Thank you Pat for your teaching and inspiration!

I self taught myself when I was quite young. I made Barbie doll clothes on my little sewing machine. I also took home ec which helped even more. My mother made curtains and some of my clothes, which I didn't like. Haha I actually started quilting after seeing a Halloween wall hanging pattern in a magazine. My favorite pastime.

I was invited to go to a quilting class, held at night at a high school. It wasn't a great class, but 2 of the 4 of us ladies, got hooked! That was in the mid 90's and I still have the small quilt hanging up in my house to remind me. Unfortunately, Lyme disease sidelined me for decades. Last Fall, I started again and found TH-cam quilters. How wonderful!!! Now, I am struggling terribly due to very poor eyesight, thanks to wet macular degeneration (actually from a medication), but I am not giving up yet. I absolutely love quilting & fabric!!!

I learned to sew starting at 7 on my mom’s treadle machine. Made doll clothes and then my own, then for nieces and nephews….and others in my 20’s. Helped my mom make quilts, by cutting squares from old men’s suits fr her to sew… then when I retired….my new neighbor got me hooked…..now almost 26 years later….I’ve made over 300 quilts and even started a longarm business….

Learned to sew in elementary school on a kiddie sewing machine that Santa brought making numerous preprinted stuffed animals, ie learning to follow the lines. After mastering that, my mom who was a seamstress, picked out a White sewing machine that I purchased on the installment plan from my allowance. Garment sewing going from aprons, to school clothes, to prom dresses. Quilting came along later. In 1976, the Chicago Tribune had a quilt on the front of their Homes & Leisure Living section one Sunday that struck my fancy. I saved it, moved it several times, and when I settled down, took a quilting class, joined a guild and used the pattern as my block for a friendship group I joined.

I learned to quilt before I was thirty and I was self taught (before the Internet and TH-cam.) I watched my Grandma and Mother sew mostly clothes from a young age and when I saw my Grandma making quilts I was excited to make them myself but it took 25+ years before I had my own machine and could unleash my desire. Now I am retired and Quilting is my passion,♥

I learned to sew from my mother at about age 11. She was a seamstress for her family growing up and she had eight sisters and two brothers and sewed garments for her sisters and self. She also had 13 children and money was tight and she sewed for all of us. And, like you, I also took Home Economics in high school. I've been mainly quilting since then although in my 20s when I was first married I made a lot of my clothes, and uniforms for work and for my young children and mended all the time. Now I just do quilting but will mend for my two children and grandchildren in whatever they need. Love what you do for all of us quilters, Pat.

I’ve always been a crafter and have tried many things. Mostly self taught. My mom sewed some but never taught me. First time I remember sewing was HomeEc class making a stuffed animal. But a high school friend’s mom was a quilter which inspired me to take quilting classes after college. I took a 10year hiatus from quilting while my kids were in Middle and High School since they were all so busy with sports and took up knitting which is more portable. 😂 I’ve been back to quilting the last year and loving it again. Thank you for your channel, Pat! I’ll be joining in with the Grandma’s Kitchen QAL.

Every August, when Southern Virginia was at its very hottest, this little Jersey girl was sent down to swelter while her parents went to Hawaii or Tahiti. One particularly hot summer, my great granny, after smothering me with mustard poultices to scare off my heat exhaustion, took me onto the shady, screened side porch to keep me busy and out of the weather. This was where all of the crops were prepared, eggs were sorted, the laundry done in an old tub washer/wringer, and an 1890s treadle machine was situated next to an iron that was heated by the Ben Franklin stove next to the door. A padded mat was tacked onto a table next to it.
Between snapping peas and shucking corn, Granny taught me to quilt right there at the treadle, sewing her four patches, and then nine patches &c. together for her, advising me not to worry about little mistakes, and teaching everything that she knew about the machine, fabric, sewing straight and nesting seams. She didn't call it "chain piecing," but rather, "flags," and she taught me the art of cereal box templates. She only had Kellog's Corn Flakes, bought by her son, who had lived on that farm all his life, save his two years serving in the Philippines during World War II. He returned home with a love of that particular boxed cereal. Granny used the cardboard well. 😊
I spent the next six summers sewing, cutting, and arranging them at her direction, and brought my own creations home to hand sew when I didn't have my own machine, and my mother's newfangled Singer was too cantankerous to deal with. 😂
My hands do not allow me to do much off the machines anymore (CTS), but as for everything else, we are still going strong and loving learning more every day. ❤

I originally learned to machine sew on my grandmother's Singer treadle machine. None of the women in my family were quilters but many clothing pieces were sewn over the years. Didn't start dabbling with quilting until my late 30s and got serious about it when I retired a few years ago. Have learned much from Pat and many others.

I am restarting a cross stitch I started for my daughter. Substituted the cloth first go round since one I wanted was unavailable. Got to a certain point and realized it wouldn't work. Put it down and several months later got an email from FQS telling me original fabric was once again available, so.....here we go again. Starting over and, hopefully, will be done by next Christmas😊

❤ Love hearing your story! Always SEW inspiring! I learned to sew at my grandmother's knee. She always had hand sewing in her lap. At age seven while visiting her and playing in her scrap bin, she threaded a needle and said sew something. 😂 Didn't get to sew with a machine until home economics. But like you, I loved it! Quilting came much later for me. I started being serious about it in 2005 and never went back to garment sewing. 😊

Pat I also learned to sew in Home Economics class and was hooked - like you “the angels sang!” 😅
I had to make a shirt, a skirt and an apron. The skirt was hideous, the shirt was ok (I can’t stand button down shirts) and the apron was top notch! I learned real quick that clothing making wasn’t my favorite thing to do, but the fabric in my hand and the hum of the machine turned on such creativity…. here I am 45 years later and if I go a couple days without sewing I feel a bit off kilter (although my husband may say that’s everyday - ha!)

My inspiration to learn to quilt was from viewing my Great Aunt's quilts every time we attended the family reunion. My Dad's family women were quilters, but because we lived on the opposite side of the country, my learning came mainly from books and PBS programs.

I learned to sew back in the 50s when it seemed like EVERYbody had a sewing machine. I watched my mother sew clothing for me. By junior high I was making my own. Quilting. Well, in the 70s a friend tried to convince me to take up quilting. I said no because I thought it would be boring just making squares all the time. By the time I got out of the 90s, my clothing patterns had shrunk. (I figured they just shrank a little each time they got put into a moving truck. ROTFL) So to maintain interest in my sewing, I took up quilting in 2002 when I was living in Nevada. I had lots of great help and access to classes from the guild in Reno, Truckee Meadows Quilters. They brought in famous quilters from just about everywhere to teach classes. Sandi Cummings was my favorite.

I learned to hand quilt when I was very little. My grandma had a quilt on a frame, and I put quilting stitches on the pencil-drawn lines by going down and then up in separate steps. I often wonder if my grandma took out my stitches when I wasn’t there. Surely they were pretty sloppy. My grandma and mother also taught me simple embroidery stitches. Also when I was little Santa brought me a child’s hand cranked Singer machine that made chain stitches because it had only a spool of thread and no bobbin. I sewed tubes of fabric to make Barbie dresses. My mother taught me to make clothing on her Kenmore machine. I could make dresses and skirts by junior high, so I already knew how to sew by the time we started home economics in 7th grade. I took up quilting after college when I watched Georgia Bonesteel on public TV. I continued to make clothing on my own Kenmore machines. About twenty years ago I started to make quilts, and I bought my first Bernina. That changed my sewing life.

Naughty I know. I made doll clothes and Barbie clothes. I then about 12 yrs old went to Singer for a sewing class. I took my first quilt class with my mom and aunt I was maybe 29? Then I quilted and cross stitched all thru my kids younger years until I went to work when I was 38. Not sure why I stopped sewing but I wish I hadn’t.

Watching her was fun, but I didn’t like making clothes, I hand sewed blocks together, from her and my grandmother’s scraps until I had enough for a double bed quilt. I failed the sewing portion of home ec - I just couldn’t figure out how to thread the machine and the teacher wouldn’t slow down enough for me to see what she was doing! As an adult, I wanted to make a Halloween costume, so I taught myself through trial and error (I asked my mom when I got stuck). After a few sewing projects I realized that I hated sewing. So I stopped. Then my sister made a quilt so I asked her to show me. I bought an Eleanor Burns quilt in a day book and followed along. The internet wasn’t really what it is now, so books and humans were really the only way. I took a break after a few quilts to get my graduate degree, and then went back full force. I’ve been quilting ever since.

    So much of interest today!
    1. Maple Syrup block? YOU have one: the Pancakes from the "Breakfast Club" sampler from early this year. I know because I never got to mine which is still kitted up.
    2. My "Tackle It Tuesday" is also CS -- a gift for my MIL which at this point probably won't get to her by Christmas, LOL! Also oooh, you're using Belle Soire Silk thread, love that floss! I forgot that Wendy Sheppard cross stitches, have to check out her recent work.
    3. Darn it, when you do "Piece & Quilt", I'm supposed to work on my "Scrappy Figs" BOM project as we are both using Fig Tree fabrics. Won't happen since in addition to the CS gift, I also have two Christmas quilts to finish up (one of which is a Xmas 2-1/2" scrap squares project) .
    4. The pink case looks like one of those jewelry cases that it's popular to embellish as a "travel sewing box" for hand work projects (see Sweetwater Stitcher's "Create A Stitching Case" here on You Tube).
    5. Also learned to sew in Home Ec (JHS for me). Loved sewing clothes and didn't discover the contemporary version of quilting until seeing the Simply Quilts TV show in 2001. Didn't start actually quilting until 2002 and haven't looked back since!
