why do I always see 0 players online? both campaign and adventure mode

You might be playing from a country where it auto defaults to your server location which may not have many players. Try the following to switch to NA server pool with more players:
Go to Battlenet's app and click "Options" gear icon next to Diablo 3's "Play" button. Then select "Game Settings" and check the box that says "Additional command line arguments". Now an empty field should appear below it and input the following line:
OnlineService.Matchmaking.ServerPool=Default
And click "Done". Now start the game and you will be connecting to US servers which has more matchmaking lobbies than other regions.
