  • Thanks to Seth for being a good sport and allowing me to rate his landings, in our quest to find some consistency! It's a good little tool to use to assess students and show them what they need work on.
    I think the Cirrus pilot in this video needs to work on a lot of things.
    Enjoy the landings!

    Once again Lew my compliments to your instructing methods! You should seriously look into training the trainer series for other instructors that I'm sure are watching your video's. You are a phenomenal instructor and I wish you were at KMDQ here in North Alabama. Your connection with your students is incredible and you truly care about their well being and teaching them to be highly proficient at operating an airplane.

    This is exactly how I was landing, I have done much better in the 140 since following exactly the POH on Approach (yours will be much different)... but the 140 is approach of 81 mph threshold rpm dropping from 1500 to 1200 then SLOWLY to zero. looking for a very slow 68 speed at the numbers. Very good to see others doing what I did also for us not so young folks. Thanks again.

But I’ll also say - he’s got a master teaching him - so this skill will get developed soon! Thanks Sir Lew for another fine lesson. Oh, the “rant” is well justified BTW.

    • @boydw1
      @boydw1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JavierRamirezLive You can think of it as flying the plane angled slightly sideways relative to your direction of travel, as a form of "air brake", helping you to reduce airspeed/altitude. The airflow encounters the side of the fuselage causing significant drag, and the air flowing over the wings at a angle reduces the wings lift a little. You basically simultaneously apply full rudder in one direction, aileron in the opposite direction to counteract the rudder, and down elevator as required to maintain sufficient airspeed (which will tend to bleed of quickly with all the extra drag). Now you're losing altitude without increasing airspeed.

    I am training out in Oregon currently and we deal with some of the Fire Helis (Heli base setup to the west side of our airport) .... they like to use a different frequency than the airport CTAF and then their Airboss flips out when we take off and land complaining to the county that the Runway needs to be closed. We are training and always calling upwind, downwind , base , and final ...... makes no sense .... use CTAF or at least monitor and call your inbound and outbound legs .....

    Out of curiosity, would it be inappropriate to try and raise that Cirrus on Guard to see if they were at least doing half a thing right and monitoring there? Or if you could see their number on ADS-B and drop a note to the FSDO? I'm not one for tattleing but plowing through at pattern altitude on a nice day when you know there's going to be there people out flying, well, it's that kind of stuff that scares the crap out of me at uncontrolled fields.

    I can identify with every one of Seth's mistakes. Although I have old age as an excuse (definitely an older dog at 72) it's taken ages to reach consistency in each of the phases of the circuit, and it's an iterative process. Get the approach profile more stable, then focus on airspeed, then improve crosswind management, improve the flair timing, then go around and repeat! It's like each element has to get burned in so you can move on to focus more on another. For example being able to manage the approach by focus on the aiming point, with less reliance on all the check points at 600ft, 500ft, 400ft etc. Finally now it's getting the landing attitude just right at the right time so there's never a risk of the nosewheel touching down to soon. Except there never is a 'finally' is there?

  •  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video as usual.
    As a CFI it is not always easy to teach students pilots how to improve their landings.

    I totally understand your frustration, especially as an instructor. Right around the end of July all through September, I had to train at an uncontrolled airport where endless crop dusting was taking place, and if you've ever flown around duster pilots, they are very much cowboys. They do intersection takeoffs, tailwind takeoffs, they enter the "pattern" wherever they want. I had one mumble they were on a right base after I called a left base. Most of the time they don't make two calls, or will after they've done what they're gonna do.
    I had one nice fellow who was behind me in the downwind chop and drop after I turned left base, called "hey I'm turning left base and will be ahead of you on this one." I was like, well at least he told me he was cutting me off.
    I found it very hard to remain professional while trying to teach my students proper calls and traffic etiquette.
