  • 'Grandpa's UR Quattro influenced my 80s classic first car' said Ben Hooper from the New Forest. Welcome to the first Generation Flex episode on The Late Brake Show. This playlist is specifically aimed at celebrating 17-25 year olds whose passion for driving, restoring/modifying and owning interesting cars is in their blood.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
This first film follows the car life story of Ben, whose late Grandfather bought a red Audi UR Quattro Turbo new in 1986 and the family still have it. That car had a huge influence on 18 year old Ben, so much so that he bought his own pure 80s classic first car. Prior to this Ben had briefly owned a Rover 220 GSI and a Ginetta, but the £600 Volvo 480 with its pop up lights was the car he passed his test in.

This is sadly also what the Volvo community tells us 480 drivers, that we have "no true Volvo" and the build quality is "not Volvo worthy" so we don't feel welcome in Volvo classic meetings. So we have our own club in the Netherlands (Volvo 480 Register) and a large WhatsApp group with mainly young people like Ben. I know Ben through the UK 480 forum, I've refurbished the instrument cluster of his car and sent him another computer when the one in his car went haywire, community support is nigh on fanatical 😅 Very nice to see his car featured here!

Love the Volvo 480ES, always wanted one from the minute I got the Matchbox toy version as a kid, but for some reason never bought a real one. They had those faults from new - they rattled and leaked and had electrical faults by the bucketload. Even the Volvo salesman in '98 talked me out of buying a second-hand one, they wouldn't retail the older ones by then, as he said to me "everything goes wrong, everything!" They drove so well, sounded nice and looked so cool though. Fantastic level of equipment for the time as well. Love the Quattro too, but it's the 480 I want!

The Volvo was mental, it would plant itself on launch (due to the body weight) then slingshot you like a drag car past any competition. The looks on peoples faces as you thrashed their brand new v8 in a 20 year old Volvo was priceless.

What an awesome first video well done. The Quattro had a very good history and it’s nice to hear a car that is so iconic to have its own stamp. So good to see some of the younger generation having a passionate interest in old cars. They are a dying breed and we need to see more of this, as we know the automotive world is rapidly changing..
Keep these videos coming, they will cement the passion a bit longer with man and machine and hopefully some women. 👍

I love this segment! Well played! I own a 480 and have always wanted one since I was able to drive. Having a passion for cars is something that should be celebrated, especially when you pass your test. In my experience I learned a lot from it and I loved gaining knowledge from every road side breakdown. Sadly my first car wasn't a 480, or a quattro, but a Citroen AX. However it never stopped me dreaming about owning my dream car.
Keep up the awesome work 👌🏻👌🏻

I absolutely LOVE this video, great format, look really forward to future episodes. I could listen to you two all day long. The 480 was my first car, bought at the local auction in 2002 and taught me a lot about car repairs 😊 I'd but another one if I could find a reasonable one just for the nostalgic value.

we bought one in 1983 when they first came to the USA. Man, it was a smooth , slick, fast handling car. It was faster around Road Atlanta than the Ferrari 308 from 1979. It was a headache, the only car that ever left us stranded.

Two old souls with oodles of passion and a tremendous feel for what makes cars tick. I’m heartened to know that Johnny is truly a diamond. Well done Johnny for spotting an opportunity and teaming up with such talent. This generation of school leavers r interested in the past and I am confident that they will carry the torch for the automotive enthusiast community. Where did you find these two roosters? Was it in a barn along with a Bristol 406?

Both are such appealing cars in their own ways. This concept of highlighting young petrol heads is a really good idea Jonny as it’s quite scary how many younger people have zero interest in cars, kids don’t like noise, effort and anything that it’s perfect it seems. Fantastic video

Great video I very much enjoyed looking at that as it brought back some memories from back in 1985 of my 1982 Audi GT couple which was also a 5 cylinder however not as amazing as that Quattro. I was only 19 at the time and loved that exhaust note of the 5 cl engine. Looking forward to more of this.
