I'm sorry man, but while there are several vehicles in this video that are truly doozies, the majority of these cars are actually dripping with 80s style awesomeness, and always have been. Many of them are even quite sought-after now by enthusiasts.

The Lincoln Mark VII is a beautiful car. I owned a 1985 LSC and loved it. The “chrome overhangs” are called “bumpers”. They actually prevented the bodywork from being damaged in low speed collisions unlike todays plastic bumper covers which fall off when hit and cost $1500 and up to replace.

    • @RhettyforHistory

The 80s and especially the mid 80s is when all the bumper changes started happening on cars. Kind of sad to see the actual bumpers gone. Thank you for watching and sharing your memory of the Lincoln.

You say ugly, I say awesome. The Kammback in particular is a long time favorite of mine. I'll take any one of these over the overly safe bubble cars that all look the exact same we drive today. My first car was a '71 Mercury Montego. It was massive and green and intensely ugly. I called it The Hulk. And I LOVED it. Wish I still had it. I took SOOOO many pictures of it, because while it wasn’t the best looking thing out of the 80s, I admired it for being different. I ended up researching later what it was and became even more impressed at its utility. A car, a truck, a wagon, it could do it all.

The Fiat Panda 'surprisingly' sold for as long as it did .... and is STILL in production..... with the paramount efforts NOT to change the looks, kooks, the efficiency, the affordability and ultimately to RETAIN the very essence of the car. It sold in the multi millions and won European Car of the year in each version. Hammock seats WERE actually comfortable (obviously not for long distances.... it wasn't ever conceived to meet that remit)..... the wheels were pushed as far to each corner like the Issigonis Mini to maximise on interior space and allow room for a small but nippy engine with space to access easily for maintenance by the owner. It was designed to be very affordable and the mechanicals were reliable (although Italian cars weren't famous for being as reliable for their electrics). The grille was directly channelled to serve it's purpose and feed directly for breathing and cooling.... no need for a massive grille for a tiny engine and less engineering to cut and primp panels in the factory. The slabs were simple and required less pressing and forming or tooling. But it's magic was it's ability. The Sisley (an Itialian fashion brand) 4x4 version was popular with European farmers (just like the Jimney was) and earned it's moniker as 'the little mountain goat' it's off road ability was astonishingly high calibre. But even the moat standard version managed snowy icey roads and was a confident performer. Almost perfect weight distribution and small wheels meant it was a good city car and good rural car in the euro terrains...... it's not surprising, then, at all..... how can 10s of millions of sales be wrong ! Fantastic car that was designed for function over it's appearance and THAT made it attractive. People forgave the box and loved it for it's virtues.
Perhaps Danny De Vito and Steve Buscemi aren't strikingly beautiful handsome professionals, but they're the amongst the best of their profession and at the top of their game.

My friend in high school had a Fiero. It was super fun to drive, but it was a lemon. Every electronic thing in that car failed, including the pop up headlights that we had to put pieces of wood under to prop up. It's swan song was a road trip to Toronto and the engine started smoking on the highway on the way back. We were 19, fresh new fake IDs in our wallets, and stoned out out of our gourds and just wanted to get past the border check and home so we kept driving. The engine was totally cooked after that and the car was junked 😂

I had a 1986 Chevy Nova hatchback. I'm in my 50s and this car still remains today the biggest piece of crap I've ever owned. It represented a joint venture between Toyota and Chevy, but I guess after Toyota saw the design they dumped the good luck aspect of their name and reverted back to the name Toyoda. The engine was made by Toyoda while the body was made by Chevy. Both components were unreliable trash. Every piece of that car was so badly designed that I literally had the brake hoses tear completely in two once while driving. And yes, you read that right. Hoses. That's what they stuck between brakeline and caliper, freaking rubber fiber hoses. The engine finally threw a rod and I scrapped the entire car for $50. Considered myself lucky for getting even that much out of it.

I guess I'm in the minority. I think those old Sevilles look pretty cool.

Hey! The AMC Eagle may have been one of the ugliest things ever built, but the drove pretty good in the snow……as long as you didn’t need to get somewhere fast.

Minus the optional rear cap, the Nissan Pulsar NX was actually one of the better looking cars to come out of the 80s.

Your humor is underrated. Using words like crap, litter box and donkey cart…I needed this laugh!

Not gonna lie, I always liked the quicksilver. It was just a cool looking car to me. The Yugo and Le Car was abominations.
And I absolutely love the Monte Carlos. They are one of my dream cars. Next to a Buick GNX

Le Car is another bad one. I do love Monte Carlo and the Buick qnd Pontiac versions as well but I was never a fan of the extra glass. Thank you for watching!

Right on! I had an 86’ Monte Carlo with the 305 and quadra-bog carb, I absolutely loved it. My sisters had Oldsmobiles…we loved em, great cars.

You are totally wrong with the Fiat Panda (🐼). In reality this first model was an extremely good little car, simple and very basic but also practical in many details. For example, the front grill was on the left or the right side because one engine (2 cyl.) was air-cooled, the other (4 cyl ) water cooled. In Italy was really a big success. And, last but not least, the designer... Giorgetto Giugiaro.

IMO, the closest that any car manufacturer got to producing a car to replace the original Mini.
