Hey all! Yes, if you’re not using the Atomos 60fps HDMI or the Kondor Blue version, you may have issues to the Ninja. I’ve used generic HDMI before, though, and had no problems. I also got a connector clamp to use on both camera/cage and monitor as they slip out very easily. Nice work! Great colors in the video. Does the difference between a 2, 3, or 4 frame delay for audio make a big difference with the sony alpha cameras? We’re expecting our atomos coming in soon.
@@MattJackson_TH-cam No problem, thanks for getting back Matt. With the new update, are you using the auto-calibration feature on the Atomos Ninja to calculate the frame delay? When I tried the feature, it recommended a 9 frame delay which seems quite a jump from the 2-3 frame delay recommended by different shooters.
Thanks for the info. Just received my Ninja and this was helpful. I'm still struggling with auto/mic, not sure if I the mic goes in the camera or in the Ninja. Advice welcomed, please?
I place mine in the input on the Ninja. You may need to tweak the delay response a bit to make sure it lines up with the speaker, but once you do, the sound is great.
Very helpful video. I am planning to get the Ninja V, as far as SSD storage options, do you think the mini AngelBird is worth the premium price (vs a standard size SSD in the Caddy) ?
I honestly don’t. The AngelBird looks super cool, but in my experience you can get more storage for less money with a traditional SSD. Plus, I’ve never had a single issue with the Samsung EVOs that I use.
Absolutely possible. Just hit record on your camera as well as the Ninja V and they will both record. You can even record to another Ninja V with the HDMI out, giving you THREE simultaneous recordings...if you really wanted to.
Dude thank you for this video. It's well made and information is laid out clearly. How do you not have a million subs?!?! I run the Sony A7S3 right now. Getting two of the new CF type a cards is like 800 bucks it's literally a better value to just get this in a two terabyte hard drive

But few people talk about shooting raw with sony. I am waiting for the new camera and I want to use raw. by the way excellent music
Wow I was really about to buy this until the 120fps part came along. I'm currently using the shinobi and I wanted to buy this for the sony a7s iii for raw and pro res for 120fps. Bummer. Will just have to manually convert on my computer instead unless s&q is a work around.
Thank you! I’m actually working on an S-LOG LUT similar to this, but in the meantime check out Mauro’s Films on TH-cam. His Arri LUT was the base for this video’s color grade.
You certainly can. I haven’t, only because I shoot 2-4 times a week, so I always transfer my footage to an internal drive then edit off an M.2. If you’re shooting ProRes you should have no problem editing directly off it.
It does not. The Ninja V with the A7iii is truly only useable in 24fps/30fps 4K. You can run 1080p 60fps, but I never do due to the lack of quality in the image.
As I understand it, you can record video on the Ninja V while you are in photo mode on the camera (eg, Manual mode), correct? So then does it record what the viewfinder sees, and if so, can you turn off the camera settings (that are shown around the perimeter of the viewfinder/LCD) on just the Ninja, or do you need to turn them off in camera too? Ok, here's the scenario, I want to photograph wildlife, but be recording video at that same time, and obviously, I don't want all the camera settings to show up in the video. Thanks for a great video! New subscriber now !
Thanks for stopping by, and thanks so much for subscribing! From my understanding, the only way to get the camera settings off on a Sony mirrorless is to be in movie mode. Otherwise, you will see what the viewfinder sees, on your recorder, in photo mode. That said, I'll have a chance to look into it soon, so if I discover that's not the case, I'll let you know!

I do car footage and have a car rig, usually the camera is mounted around 15 feet away but I end up using 20-30feet of cable in order to reach my regular monitor to the cab without too much stress, but I’m curious to know if this would work using it on the ninja.. the recording feature to the monitor is what is really interesting to me. And could be very very Beneficial
I’ve used an 8 ft HDMI before, but that’s the longest I’ve tried to date.
Nine Stories Creative I guess I will be the test dummy lol
Lemme know how it goes!
Nice work! Great colors in the video. Does the difference between a 2, 3, or 4 frame delay for audio make a big difference with the sony alpha cameras? We’re expecting our atomos coming in soon.
Apologies for the delayed response - yes, the delay is extremely helpful. It’ll take some trial and error but it’s a great feature.
@@J_bui that’s interesting - I’ve never heard of it wanting a delay that long. Is the delay you set working well?
Thanks for the info. Just received my Ninja and this was helpful. I'm still struggling with auto/mic, not sure if I the mic goes in the camera or in the Ninja. Advice welcomed, please?
I place mine in the input on the Ninja. You may need to tweak the delay response a bit to make sure it lines up with the speaker, but once you do, the sound is great.
Hi
Any idea why is starts frim 640 ISO?
Checking camera settings can t find what is causes
What camera are you using? The A7siii has a base ISO of 640 in S-LOG.
@@MattJackson_TH-cam using Sony A7 s iii.
It starts internally 160 ISO S-Log3.as soon as i turn on my ninja 5 it changes automatically to 640 ISO
Great video! Could you tell me where you shopped for the parts on your cinema rig for your Sony?
Thank you! I got everything on Amazon and BH/Adorama.
I have the a7riii and need more running time for a podcast. Is overheating an issue?
friend recommend me an atom monitor for my sony alpha 7RIV camera,,
How I can simultaneous recording (internally and externally) with Sony A7iii with Atomos Ninja V in the same time ?
Is it possible ?!
Absolutely possible. Just hit record on your camera as well as the Ninja V and they will both record. You can even record to another Ninja V with the HDMI out, giving you THREE simultaneous recordings...if you really wanted to.
@@MattJackson_TH-cam Thank you so much 🌹
You got it!
@@MattJackson_TH-cam Hi! I don't know why simultaneous recording hasn't worked for a while. I have to push rec on both devices.
@@giampaolomarconato3958 hm, I'd have to dig in and find out why that's happening in the settings...
Dude thank you for this video. It's well made and information is laid out clearly. How do you not have a million subs?!?! I run the Sony A7S3 right now. Getting two of the new CF type a cards is like 800 bucks it's literally a better value to just get this in a two terabyte hard drive
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind worlds - and I agree - if you don’t absolutely need 120fps in 4K I love the Ninja V for so many reasons.
@@MattJackson_TH-cam dude, I recognize hard work when I see it. TH-cam algorithm be cray. Definitely not giving you what you deserve!
I really appreciate that so much. One of these days the algorithm will catch up!
@@MattJackson_TH-cam I'm subbing to you and there's nothing you can do about it! ❤️❤️
I’ll take it. Haha. Thanks!!!
The A7III outputs only up to 60fps over hdmi anyway, so no harm done with the limitation of the Ninja. 😀
Indeed!
Love your sense of humor.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching! A lot!
Thank you very much for this video. I wonder if you could talk about the new sony a7siii and ninja v. nobody talks about this and in my opinion it is a good combination. But few people talk about shooting raw with sony. I am waiting for the new camera and I want to use raw. by the way excellent music
Once I get my hands on the A7siii, I most definitely will! It’s a killer combo!
How can I record 1080 60fps with ninja v? I can’t find the option
If you set your camera to that setting, the Ninja will automatically switch over.
@@MattJackson_TH-cam it didn't work :( i saved the setting on my camera with 60 fps and it only gets recorded on to my ninja as 24fps :(
Such a great video, Thanks Man!
Nicely done review 👍
Thanks so much!
Wow I was really about to buy this until the 120fps part came along. I'm currently using the shinobi and I wanted to buy this for the sony a7s iii for raw and pro res for 120fps. Bummer. Will just have to manually convert on my computer instead unless s&q is a work around.
I know - it’s a super bummer that it doesn’t record at 120fps since so for many Sony shooters it’s a staple.
Wes Anderson XD Nice video dude
Keep Up the great work with this channel! I really admire your style. Any chance I can purchase the color grade used for this video?
Thank you! I’m actually working on an S-LOG LUT similar to this, but in the meantime check out Mauro’s Films on TH-cam. His Arri LUT was the base for this video’s color grade.
Great presentation and informative!
Thank you!!!!
So classy. So official. Why yes, sire!
I love your vids sir new loyal subscriber here 😊
Thank you so much!!!
Can you use the same SSD you record with to edit off of?
You certainly can. I haven’t, only because I shoot 2-4 times a week, so I always transfer my footage to an internal drive then edit off an M.2. If you’re shooting ProRes you should have no problem editing directly off it.
Nine Stories Creative that’s incredible, I shoulda bought one of these sooner. Thanks for the video and replying!
It’s probably the single most effective tool I’ve added to my kit - couldn’t recommend highly enough! And thank you for watching!!!
Directed by Wes Anderson. Great work, man! (and useful, too)
That’s the aim, no matter what celebrity director I hire 🤣
This guy. Can both relax, entertain and inform me in 1 video... subbed :)
Thanks so much! Welcome to the channel, friend.
This is a amazing video... just bought mine a couple of weeks ago and loving it… bye 30min recording limit on a73
Thank you! I love the Ninja - it's changed the game for me completely.
May I know if I can still use the Ninja V as a monitor only without the SSD plugged in? Thank you!
Absolutely. It functions as a monitor with or without the SSD.
loved this video
I have a question, does the Atomos Ninja V allow the Sony a7iii to record in 4k 60fps?
It does not. The Ninja V with the A7iii is truly only useable in 24fps/30fps 4K. You can run 1080p 60fps, but I never do due to the lack of quality in the image.
Excellent.
thanks so much for the video
Hi Matt, thank you for the video. You made me understand more about the Ninja V. Do you think it will be a good investment for me to purchase the Ninja V now to be used with my old A7iii to start my videography? I do appreciate any thoughts. Best wishes 🙏
What aspect ratio is this video exported in? Great content!
Thanks so much! Edited and exported in 21:9. Shot on the Atomos with the 21:9 guides.
