  • When the sun sets on the two runways in Markham, Ont., on Thursday, it will mark the last day for Buttonville airport.
The small municipal airfield north of Toronto has churned out thousands of pilots over several decades and is the place where so many of the country’s pilots started their careers.
Stefan Chan began at the airport’s flight school in 2019. Since then, he’s gained both his private and commercial pilot licenses at Buttonville. He was back at the airfield Thursday to say goodbye.
“We’re all just sad to see it go, it’s a big part of our lives,” he told Global News. “This airport has been home to us really, it has been the jumping-off point for so many of our years.”
From Dec. 1, work will begin at Buttonville to begin turning the former airstrip into a chunk of industrial land. The new project is set to bring well-connected industrial jobs to the area.

An airport for a shopping centre.....that makes TOTAL sense. Sad to see her shuttered. I too am shocked that the Feds didn't step in. Buttonville was important infrastructure. There are plenty of golf courses that could be used for housing/ shopping centres instead. Btw, Pickering doesn't want the airport. There have been ongoing protests against it.

not just for the shopping centre aspect it was dangerous, many accidents in the past decade (runway excursions, emergency landings, crashes) and the danger is only aided by the fact that it is so close to nearby roads and highways

@@thatweirdguy_ben Huh, odd that I hadn't heard about that given that I've flown out of Buttonville many times.

But this will restrict the York Police's ability to crash their drones into aircraft

Please help....what happened to all the hanging photo's of the pilots in the office? I would like to have the framed photo of a pilot who is a family member. Anyone know what happened to all of the photo's? Please help.

Re-developing this land is going to put further stress on the already horribly congested 16th Avenue and hwy 404.

Can never get that land back. Very few airports left. YYZ Pearson prices are crazy high, that’s why folks go to Buffalo to travel. Need more not fewer airports.

the moment CF bought it you knew it's days were numbered. it's too bad..... but toronto is in a massive need of houses, so i suppose it's what's needed. not much more land available anymore, now that the greenbelt is off the table.

While it is sad it is an important step in the safety of Markham and Toronto residents. There have been many accidents, especially due to the runways close proximity to nearby 16th Avenue and Highway 404. Hopefully an extension at Billy Bishop will be approved to fill this gap once the airport has closed.

This is so typical of Toronto and Trudeau. All the crybabies downtown won't allow an expansion for the Bishop airport that's desperately needed. Now Buttonville is closing. The right thing would be for the feds to step up and take it over and fund it properly so it can continue to service northern Toronto. But since when has Trudeau done anything useful?

The closure was announced in 2009... from 2009 - 2015 Stephen Harper (conservative) was in power, he not only endorsed the plan but helped it move forward. There was zero political will from any government for the last 14 years to stop or change this - where were you @Fitzz78 when this was still something that could have been changed?

To be fair, the funding was pulled during the Harper government era. By the time Trudeau came, the deal with Cadillac Fairview was already signed.
