@@ChaosMind10531 Cantonese speaks are more exposed to mandarin-based media and content, but not true the other way around. The pronounciation and tones of cantonese is just very different, plus there are grammar/vocab that's unique to Cantonese as well. OMG TEOCHEW
I talk that dialect too and never thought i would find someone else talking about it, especially online. In your friends' case, that's kinda because Teochew is so fucking different from other dialects, like idk, it even differs between mutual Teochew speakers.
It's from mainland China first, but mine has some vietnamese, cantonese and cambodgian words in it because of my ancestors's history. So if i were to go back where the dialect came from, I wouldn't be able to understand 100% of their Teochew.
So trying to undertand another dialect or mandarin only based on Teochew is impossible. It doesn't even sound remotely close compared to Mandarin and Cantonese, and trust me i live in an asian district, grew up able to differentiate them but I don't understand a word in both.

If you speak the dialects, its possible to semi-understand mandarin.
The problem is when you only speak mandarin and then try to understand the dialects, its very difficult. Its cause dialects have more tones than mandarin.
For example, cantonese have 6 tones, hokkien has 7 tones. while mandarin has only 4 tones.

They tend to be older gens or people who interact with older gens constantly. I doubt that much people uses 9 tones now cause of phones, its hard to catch different tones via call, especially with background sounds.
That's why you will think a lot of chinese people yell into their cellphones, its cause its easier to distinguish tones when its spoken loudly.

Perhaps the reason chinese speakers "sound angry" sometimes might have something to do with chinese languages having _specific tonal patterns_ in certain syllables that, to native English speakers, sometimes sound like emotional inflection even though they aren't.
In English, a rising tone at the end of a sentence is usually an inflection of alarm or confusion, but in Chinese it could just be how that word is pronounced.

I don't think a lot of people truly "get" how gargantuan and old China is. There's enough overlap between Cantonese & Mandarin to _kind of_ understand bits and pieces, but suggesting they're similar (not that anyone here has, granted) would be a bit like saying the Cree and Western Apache are similar because they're both Indigenous American languages.

I've mainly watching English Selen clips and when this popped up I was like, "wait she can speak mandarin". watching Enna struggle with Selens Cantonese made this feel relateable. I can also speak Mandarin so I perfectly understood Enna but I couldn't understand Selen at all. It's cool learning that some of my favorite vtubers can also speak the same language as me

Cantonese will always sound super passivr aggressive while madarin is lower tier passive aggressive
