+nunirosario We keep stingrays and that was our intention with this one. They're great bait and they taste good too. We take the barb off and it makes it much easier to handle while we are working with it before we cut it up and put it in the cooler. Thanks for watching!
+Southern Fishing Addiction oh that's good I thought you were going to release it but if you keep them I understand I'm in fl. just waiting for this rain to pass so I can do some fishing to. I subscribed to your channel you guys do good work I enjoy your videos good job be blessed.
I have a 4 year old pet mono stingray I have de-barbed every 2 years, it doesn't hurt them at all. However, stingrays do use the barb to defend theirselves in the wild. Mine is in a 230 gallon tank so he doesn't need it, but if he was in the wild he would. Those barbs can be dangerous though!
i helped a guy from another country pull in a monster like that and i cut the tail off and threw it back because it was alot of people swimming where he was fishing and i was recordingvit on fb live. i got so much back lash. i didn't understand from the sting rays perspective but after they broke it down to me now i leave it on. the little ones are the hardest to take off the hook.lol Great catch and thanks for sharing.
My dad used to fish for redfish but sometimes he would catch stingrays. He stayed that they would get really flat and stick to the bottom and you would fight them for hours
Southern Fishing Addiction Yea boiled with virgin oil , lemon juice , garlic it's great . I also tried it pan fried . First dipped in flower then fried , and squeeze a lemon on it , delicious!
Yes, the barb will grow back but it takes quite awhile. You were in control and releasing after a short period of time so no point in removing it. Those people that requested you not to break it off just didn't want to see such a awesome creature hurt in any way.
+linro It doesn't hurt them, it's actually a regular practice in Florida fisheries. We keep all stingrays we catch which is what we were intending to do with this one but with the controversy the tourists were creating it was best to not do that at the time. Removing the barb was for the tourists safety because they were swimming right next to a fishing pier (really dumb thing to do by the way) where big stingrays and sharks hang out in the surf all the time. Thanks for watching!
"Don't break that off" that man just font know the danger that a stingray could do with its tail. Anyways good catch I wish I could catch one. Nice job!!!
That pier is a bit high but try using a crab net to pull it up... I always keep one dangling when fishing for anything that puts too much stress on my gear
What was the width of your ray? I caught one 42" across about five years ago in Delaware bay. Wow, what a fight! It took two men to pull it into the boat. I was so exhausted, I couldn't even help. I've always wondered what that thing weighed.
I was at the pier about 30 people next to somebody his long was bending down massively and a stingray was on it I was fishing with my friend they tried to get the stingray bout 80 pound stingray my friends stepdad put on gloves and tryed helping the man but the darn pole snapped in half and the most stunning thing is it happened at the same location
I encounter "pro tourists" all the time while surf fishing. Some ppl are clueless about these situations but think they are experts. I had a guy make fun of me for shark fishing in a certain area of SC, after I reeled in a 5 ft blacktip 10 min later and then showed him pictures of the 7 sharks I caught 2 hours before that he apologized and said I'll keep quiet from now on. It happens.
good to know your using it for bait, that's not clear in your video. by all means stay safe if you're planning to keep the fish. the video and comments make it seem your removing the barb before you release. thanks for the clarification. what do you use it as bait for down there.
i was just wondering, if you took his sting away, and you claim that it grows back isn't the sting essential for the ray to get his food? wouldn't he starve untill it grows back? i'm not an expert i was just wondering and i hope a good answer! - Curious guy from the Netherlands :).
+CookieMonsterrHD They do not use the barb for food. They eat small crustaceans, clams, small fish, and anything that has died and has sank to the bottom.
Southern Fishing Addiction ahh! thanks for your answer o my conclusion is that the stingray will use his barb in cases of needs like against a bigger fish? i'm just trying to learn more a bit :D
+CookieMonsterrHD No the barb is never used for food It is only used for self defense against predators like sharks and stuff. Sometimes people get stung because people accidentally step on them.
Those tourist think they know everything. You should have broke the barb off right before you released it. When someone gets hurt that's when everyone wants to listen. Nice catch though.
I was at seal beach ...80 pound braid ....60 pound test ...dont know what i had my bait was a whole mullet head big too about 6 inches about to go home and call it a night i was just messing around with my brothers with that cast... and my line stars dragging barely held and boom bit thru it dont know what it was but big fish maybe around d 2 or 3 hundred pounds wasnt ready for it
i hooked one at jekyll island last year on my birthday. damn thing was as big as the hood of my truck. i couldn't land him though because i was on the pier at low tide and he was on 20 lb test line. Did get to see him though. if i had been on the beach, i might have stood a chance.
if you handle it properly it wouldnt have hurt anyone just saying but if you are inexperienced then you break it because it will be safer that way i have released 4' - 5' rays and if you stay in front of them and have 2 people you wont need to break it get the "holes on its head" and drag it or have 2 people on on each side drab its face and drag it to the edge of the water it will make its way back with its barb. ps children should not handle rays and if one wants to touch them wich they always do tell them just the nose ... and yes i have landed them from the end of the peir 3hr fight then fight them down the peir to the beach.. yes th barb grows back but its unnecessary
That ray would've most likely died a couple days later. Seeing from the video, they only cut the line, and it wasn't even anywhere close to its mouth. First thing you should have done was to flip it over and try to get the hook out. They can either eventually swallow it which can cause punctures in its stomach, or even start jabbing its own heart. Or, tear its mouth open through time. If the hooks too deep, then cutting the line millimeters from its mouth would help it feed more comfortably. In the end, it seems like these people had no clue on what they were doing. Idiots.
+Steven Ng The Hook would rust over time and deteriorate. And I highly doubt that the fish would die in a matter of days and if it was in its mouth it would most likely get the hook out of its mouth with it dragging on the bottom.
Hate to ask but where are you catching those pigs? The only place here that I catch anything over 3 pounds is Greenfield lake and I'm still trying to figure out something other than a sinko.
Southern Fishing Addiction I tried a dropnet twice with a cownose and their tail just slices the net open but I always bring my own gaff because I found out I cant rely on others to have one
FYI it takes a stingray many months to fully grow back their stinger. So if you don't keep it, it may be best to leave it on the animal so you do not send it back into the water defenseless. Just a thought.
Considering I work with tons of different stingray's on a daily basis, I think I would know better than your made up facts. The time differs by species and stingrays do not need their barbs in the wild, their barbs does not deter any of their large predators.
Man, don't ever listen to "Dumb Asses" around you on the beach. It's your fish caught legally, he can do nothing but stand there and watch. When I was your age, and he would of said that to me, well lets just say, he would a took offence from the young buck. Just don't forget to have that fun you were promised.

Good to know the barbs grow back and that there is a safe ish way to handle a stingray, nice catch
Thank you!
I love y'all deer hunting vids.
I'm glad you didn't cut the barb off since that is it's defence that made this a awesome video good job.

wow i never knew that the barb grows back thanks for sharing :)
good catch mate
The video u posted about the flounder gulp bait and the jigs would the jig take it to the bottom or do u need a weight
Meghan R No extra weight is needed. The weight of the jig will take the bait to the bottom.
Stingray is actually good eating , pan fried or roasted fire or boiled with lemon juice . But that sucker was big .
+Giovani22 I've had it boiled and it was great!
Southern Fishing Addiction Yea boiled with virgin oil , lemon juice , garlic it's great .

good work and good fisherman catch and release

@@InTheSouthOutdoors all you got to do is grab the barb with a rag or gloves
Yeah it’s to protect itself against predators that’s why they shouldn’t have done that
That pier is a bit high but try using a crab net to pull it up... I always keep one dangling when fishing for anything that puts too much stress on my gear

I'm not sure what the size of this ray was but it put up a good fight!
I am one of those Fishermen who love stingrays
Nice catch 👍, those loud mouth drunks , don't understand the process.

+Cameron Taylor that is incorrect the barb dose grow back it just takes about 1 month.
+Cameron Taylor Maby you damaged the tail when you cut it off but if you brake or snap it of it does grow back
+CookieMonsterrHD No the barb is never used for food
It is only used for self defense against predators like sharks and stuff. Sometimes people get stung because people accidentally step on them.
Did you just cut the line or leave the hook in its mouth?
+Michael Gro The jackass tourist that came up and took over had the line cut and hook left in it's mouth.
Michael Gro xshjgv my gl

the barb barely even provides defense for them, most sharks just completely ignore them.
i just caught a 15+ lb sting ray a few days ago. amazing experience. i agree with removing the barb. they grow back anyways.
this kid is so funny

Paul Downer Oak Island

Paul Downer I don't catch them here in Oak Island. I catch those in the ponds in the towns around the Raleigh area.
Southern Fishing Addiction I live in sophia
The piers i fish at we always gaff the rays and pull them up on the pier that way
we didn't have a gaff. we had a drop net that was too small. Normally we would have a gaff but we didn't at the time.
Southern Fishing Addiction I tried a dropnet twice with a cownose and their tail just slices the net open but I always bring my own gaff because I found out I cant rely on others to have one

I agree
Scott Seamone actually it takes a total of 7-15 days so chill
No it takes a week and a half, you ignorant moron, the stingray does not need a barb.
Considering I work with tons of different stingray's on a daily basis, I think I would know better than your made up facts. The time differs by species and stingrays do not need their barbs in the wild, their barbs does not deter any of their large predators.

Actually it's so you aren't cut to ribbons on the piling barnacles if pushed into them by the waves.
NICE ONE.
Only certain stingrays can grow back their barb but either way once they're that large they don't really need their barb anymore.
xx
WestCoastFishing actually they do need their barb because there are tons of hungry sharks that the rays need to fend off

Nice sting ray
+isaiah plummer Thanks!
+Southern Fishing Addiction Instead of cutting the barb completely try to cut it at the sharp end so its not likely the barb would pierce.
