Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Playthrough with an Actual Lawyer! Part 1

  • Here's the first episode in our Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Playthrough with an actual lawyer! We have a professional voice actor and our real lawyer to playthrough the game and show us just how realistic is the court system depicted in Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney. In this episode, we cover the introduction case and realize pretty quickly that there are a lot of things that don't exactly line up with the US court system 😅.
    We are planning to record the show live on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm EST, so feel free to watch us play and interact with us in the chat on our twitch at: / savedatateam

      The localization of the game (the English one) has the setting in the USA. However, since the games are made in Japan, it is therefore it is based (mostly, I think) on the Japanese justice system, not the American one.
      If I recall correctly, the Japanese justice system is different to the American one. Also note that the first game came out in 2001. Anything could have changed in the Japanese justice system during the later years.
      The English version of Ace Attorney is set in the USA but is using the Japanese justice system as a basis. Weird yes but that is essentially what it is

      Keep in mind taped programs existed many years before cell phones became common. They technically existed a ways before, but very late 90s-early 2000s they weren't super common, wheras recordable VHS tapes were pretty common as early as the early 80s.

    • @GoldieTamamo
      @GoldieTamamo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Magnetic Tape recording was a thing in the 1950's, and Betamax and VHS first became a popular thing in the 70's. OG Ace Attorney is set in the early 2000's when flip phones were taking off, so it's not actually that unreasonable that someone as old as the Judge hasn't taken note of the phenomena of cell phones--they'd be more used to pagers/beepers by that point.

For example, I used to work at a law firm where one of the partners had license to practice in West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, North Carolina, and Florida. He was looking at his license for Tennessee. A few of our associates were looking for licensure in Kentucky so they could work on cases assigned to the firm from those states. Well, this is a fun playthrough. I like it!
    Yes, this game was made, I believe, as a satire of the Japanese justice system. Apparently, Prij is already aware of the 99+% conviction rate. Also, apparently, police are (or were, at least) allowed to hold a suspect for several *weeks* without access to an attorney. Prij mentioned the lack of a jury as a feature of the game, but in fact, this is accurate: juries are nonexistent in Japan. However, I hear that some years back, they instituted something they call "lay judges", which sort of fulfill a similar role to juries, though I don't know the details.
    Another thing that is accurate is that Japanese attorneys must have badges. (I believe the design is based on the Chrysanthemum Seal, aka the Imperial Seal of Japan. Except it's supposed to have 16 petals, and this one only has 14 if you count them!)
    23:47 "They're breaking the rules". Ah, so this must be _Ace Attorney._ Got it. 😆
    40:55 And yet, so many courtroom dramas have the defense attorney winning (even on a regular basis, with some series) by showing that a witness was the actual perpetrator. It's such a huge trope! 😆
    41:38 TBF, even in _Ace Attorney,_ from what I know, they don't find the witness guilty right then and there (though I don't know much of the series, so maybe they do at some point?). They just use the evidence of them committing the crime to find the defendant not guilty. That said, you often have the police arresting said witness right in the court, before the verdict is even delivered. The judge even sometimes has to ask the prosecutor why the witness is no longer there! 😆

    • @SaveDataTeam
      @SaveDataTeam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Yeah, some of the facts about the Japanese criminal justice system do seem pretty crazy (although I suppose the U.S.'s is far from perfect either, lol). And that's super cool about the badge! Glad you're enjoying so far! 😄

    • @NotAGoodUsername360

      Ah yes, Lay Judges was an idea introduced actually not too long after the original trilogy ended, and uh... the Ace Attorney series definitely put in its two cents in on the benefits of the system.

    Japan's well known for its 99% conviction rate so... yeah, probably the least subtle parody of the Japanese legal system here is that virtually the only way to get your client acquitted is to find the actual murderer and get them to confess to their crime on the witness stand. Anything less, even firmly establishing your client couldn't possibly have done it, will still get a guilty verdict in the absence of that.

    Props for going further than only the first trial tho, which is probably the most inaccurate because it's a tutorial.

    My understanding of the legal system in Ace Attorney is basically an extremely detailed examination of absolutely everything you do NOT want in a legal system and demonstrates in explicit detail why you do not want it and why due process and complicated court procedures that basically reduce the actual trial to little more than a formal ceremony with a foregone conclusion is a good thing.

    In the localised version of the game, the series takes place in an alternate Los Angeles where, and I shit you not, Pearl Harbor never happened, and opinions on Japanese people was a lot better that it was, which meant a lost more Japanese immigrants. If you have any criticisms for how inaccurate the trials are, the canon reason is somewhere along the line the legal system became more like Japan's legal system, and the series is meant to be a parody of how that works. The first game takes place in 2016.
