While I agree the greatest contribution from the British Empire to India, was the English Language. However, plenty of countries that were never a British colony, managed to adapt English just as fine. Colonisation was never a necessity for English. The mere idea of "India benefited more from being a British Colony" is flabbergasting.
If you think English was the greatest contribution, I have a small incomplete list for you. You forget that India did not exist in its present form, it was collection of 600 princely states with economy based on primitive practices and suffered repeated invasions since 1000AD. It could not have competed with Industrial revolution taking place in Britain. The British modernised India: - Democracy - Rule of law - Innocent until proven guilty - Abolished Slavery, Sati, Thuggee and burning of lepers alive - Postal system - Civil Service - Canal irrigation system (esp. in Punjab and Andhra Pradesh) - English - Railways - Telegraph - 50 year trigonometrical survey - Survey of India (maps) - Geological survey - Zoological survey - Botanical Survey - Army - Navy - Parliament - Created cities like Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and Delhi - Defeated barbarian Tipu and handed back powers to Wodeyars. Super administration made Bangalore the capital and the power house it is today. - Modern system of government - Railways - 80 hill stations - Tea industry from scratch - Coal industry from scratch - Malaria and Small pox cure (deadliest killers at that time) - Power stations - Electricity - Bridges and roads - All your government deptt. has its origins from British period. - Created india by unifying it - Archaeological Survey - Discovered Ashoka and established a timeline to Indian history. Told this to Indians who had lost touch with its past after 700 years of invasions from Persia. - Established Asiatic society - Curzon preserved all monuments and historical sites. Pumpkin K If you watched the video, you'd get an explanation for how the industrialisation of Britain was funded. I appreciate how you took time to make a list. Let me however remind you that you need to look at this list with the correct perspective. All this took shape over a period of 300 years of colonisation. Also, there are some rather unlikely claims in your list. Like: "Discovered Ashoka and established a timeline to Indian history. Told this to Indians who had lost touch with its past after 700 years of invasions from Persia." This is very much not true as these invasions were only affected in the northern regions. not to mention how they relied on "divide and conquer" Which is pretty much the opposite of what you claimed here. It should be rather obvious that none of the industries that none of the industries that you mentioned were built for the sake of India. And None of these Industries are currently India's main exports. To even consider all these as contributions, seems rather odd. Considering how India had been a suppressed country during this period. As for Malaria and Small pox cures, I am cetainly capable of listing a huge number of cures in Modern medicine that is based on Ayurveda. Or let's not forget how medical surgery is from India. I can continue expaining how most of the things listed here is not applicable in the sense. Just tell me you want me to do so. Otherwise, it's just a waste of my time. Hahaha, "Barbarian Tipu".
Kevin Varughese It is not possible to change someone's opinion but facts are facts - it is indisputable. I'm not claiming colonisation was for the benefit of Indians. Not sure who the gentleman, of African descent is. But it appears that he has been given a place on the panel purely to give it a diverse look. For him to base his views on a culture that is over 5000 years old, on a flying visit to the Jaipur Literary Festival, is so a ludicrous as to make any comment on it inconsequential. He seems to believe that all that happened in India, before the British colonised it, was the establishment of the Mughal Empire. Little realising that the Mughals themselves were invaders and looters, who then turned settlers. And that is when they built the magnificent cities that William Dalrymple was talking of, using the craftmanship of converted Indian artisans. Finally, the irrefutable point to settle this unnecessary debate is this - whether one talks of Vasca da Gama's voyage to Calicut, or the advent of the British, Dutch or the French, in India - none of them came looking for a blighted, impoverished land, which they wished to set right with the generous imparting of their language or systems. They all came to profit from trading with a hugely prosperous land; seizing upon the opportunity offered by small, warring princely states, almost totally devoid of naval power, to be completely overrun and colonised, they wasted no time in establishing their sovereignty over a land and people for whom they had no consideration whatsoever. Other than looking at them as ready-made resources for the prosperity of their mother countries.
Sridhar Kaushik Let us not judge people by the colour of their skins. Judge the proposition and not the person. He made valid points when he said we need to look at the benefits that have accrued and how that will help the nation in the future -whether incidental, accidental or conscious. It was a good argument that he put forth; we may reject it, but please do so on the merits of the argument, not the colour of the speaker.
debojyoti chanda Yes, talented in speech. He is also talented in spotting good looking females and befriending them, sometime marrying them! Nehru was also a good orator but was he good for India? That is a separate debate in itself!
Sridhar Kaushik Did Congress give him any space to anything substantial.. As an MP of Trivandrum from my home state, he has done a fairly good job... Well he was Under secretary general in UN, working as negotiator in great events like Yugoslav wars and was head of peace making committee in UN.. Has it not been for the vested interest of USA, he would have ended up being the Secretary General... Simple oratory cant get a man to that level. His career in India was marred by controversies half of which was unnecessary. I think you need to give this man a chance.
Of course, I know that I should hesitate before I jump in into a swords-drawn argument between Pumpkin K and Kevin Varughese. There is the minor point of whether in fact the much touted Industrial Revolution was the right path for the whole world to follow. Hindsight is gifted with 20-20 vision, so it is unfair to say today that the jury is still out on a possible ecosphere-saving non-industial revolution. The one fact that is not really mentioned in many debates is that India would not have stayed frozen in her momentum of growth if the British had not colonised her. Perhaps she would have done the immensely wiser thing to progress along a much more sustainable growth trajectory and could have been the source of an alternate wisdom the world could have benefited from. This is something we will never now know, and this fact sits squarely at the doorstep of the colonisers!
From honest people like Darlymple and others we learn this: Britain enriched itself by looting India's wealth. The good things that happened were only incidental, not deliberate.
the Black man thinking English Language as Miracle Language stupid. Mughal used Urdu and Persian and is one of the most sweet language of the world ever, because there is no language like URDU Persian using most respected words and wish. this black man must understand china growing with English Language?
Shashi Tharoor Living Legend of India, the African speaker doesn't know anything about Mughal , if mughal was not secular all India would have changed to their favor. British looted India Gold Diamond even under wear of Mughal King which made with pearl and diamond. the Crown of British Queen also made with looted Diamond. British looted Precious Indian KOHINOOR Ratna still with Queen's Palace.
The Jury is still out on what is better: China's autocratic rule with highly impressive growth or India's parliamentary democracy with unequal, unimpressive growth. Just a few stats will suffice. India's literacy rate: 73% China's more than 90%. India's Neonatal Death rate: 30 plus per 1000 live births. China's 1/3rd of this. Tax payers in India: 3% of population. China: 20%!
William Dalrymple control most of the literary events in India. It is time we take it back in our own hands. Need no gora sahib telling us about our culture and worse controlling the discourse.
in their chambers and mahagony furnished rooms and halls, such people talk endlessly, in their most honest of belief and in their exalted self importance and ignorance feel that their thoughts in an English institution, that their rotten and often shallow opinion matters. let me humbly tell you, it doesnt matter. no body cares. also William is a horrible historian with little knowledge except for his romantising of Mughal history. Sashi tharoor who has the better knowledge, will also try to white wash the blunders by congress, yet he is the one to make sense.

It was a good argument that he put forth; we may reject it, but please do so on the merits of the argument, not the colour of the speaker.
sashi used the right linesgiving pain to the soul, body...yeah you have to say in that manner.
the end note is cutoff or edited.. wonder y

We should send a bill.:)
English is just a language, take control of it, use it but, don't get enslaved by it.
Well Said
tharoor is the man.......
Damn tharoor is talented ..I never knew that.maybe he never given such speech in India..lol..tharoor is good..but really why he is congress?,damn.
***** yeah u r right ..as long as they have a whitch queen Sonia ruling them..feeding his stupid son and different party puppies on black money...
As much corrupt Congress is, there's really no other political party in the country where a man of tharoor's credential and background be a part.
debojyoti chanda
Yes, talented in speech. He is also talented in spotting good looking females and befriending them, sometime marrying them!
Nehru was also a good orator but was he good for India? That is a separate debate in itself!
MultiNethen
Has he done anything substantial than giving fine speeches in Queen's English? I doubt it.
Jyoti Thyagarajan
Exactly. And yet nobody mentions it. Japan would be a prime example to justify this conjecture.
Wow wow!!!!
superb
amazing speech
Who is the lady who reads off the paper in the beginning?
ഇത്രയും ശക്തമായ ഭാഷയിൽ പ്രതികരിക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞ തരൂരിന് അഭിനന്ദനങ്ങൾ...

Great speech Tarur sir
From honest people like Darlymple and others we learn this: Britain enriched itself by looting India's wealth. The good things that happened were only incidental, not deliberate.
Honestly Graphic is very bad it ruin the whole presentation

Speaking of the first counter argument of the Empire side, how come history is not related to the future? Your argument is called fallacy you know!
That girl reads what she just wrote she’s not a debater she’s better to be newscaster
this speech is hollow. cant hear properly
China: 20%!
If you think economic growth is more important than an individuals freedom and liberty, you deserve a master and will get one.
Robbers
An African supporting colonisation . Did hi know how the word apartheid came into existanse.
you have the oval,we have LAGAN....

Shashi Tharoor should now write a book on tyranny of Indians mainly Hindus under Muslim rule
we asking you to compensate our wealth,money..you looted killed million of people..shame.how cld u foreget past.if sum1 kil ur dad.will u forgiv.
Plagiarism by Tharoor from another source. What a pseudo intellectual.
