- This is something I get asked about quite a lot. Here's the stuff that doesn't get talked about much, but it's a crucial part of the process.
I mean, sure, important, yadda yadda. It's still boring.
Addendum:
I mistakenly added 400v 22nF Vishays to the cart due to CE’s page refresh. I changed those to 630V afterwards.
And I probably should have shown how to take advantage of Mouser’s pricing tiers. For example, ten Vishay PR02 resistors cost less than five.
I always use that but didn’t get into it in the video. In retrospect I wish I had.

You know you have reached a high level of nerdism when you read "Boring | Choosing and Ordering Parts" and you say "oooh" in your mind. 🙄lol
Lyle, in all seriousness. There is nothing boring about any of your videos. They're full of knowledge and I find myself glued to the screen absorbing anything I can.
Lyle helps me fall asleep or stay awake depending on the time of day. Kind of like a cup of tea.
Thanks Kyle. This is the side of the business a lot of people never see but it is part of the true cost of repairing an amp.
A lot of customers don't realise how much time one spends sourcing parts and trying to save them money, it's the same for me doing gearboxes, multiple suppliers, in different countries, changing stock and manufacturers so sometimes you can't buy stuff, or limited choice, sometimes multiple sellers same parts, different prices, price breaks on quantities, trade or retail, varied delivery options but it always takes time which isn't directly billable so you have to factor into your 'hourly' rate same as bank charges and accounting, utilities and tools; the joys of self employment as a sole trader.
Really liked the project function on mouser. That way you can save and check what you ordered and do it again easily.
I worked at CE for twelve years before I retired a few years ago. Got wholesale prices when I worked there but now I pay retail. But they are only 4 miles from my house so I never pay for shipping.

Very interesting. I could tell Lyle was trying to hold back from moving at the fast speed he normally would when ordering those parts. He likely had some buss wire tied to his clicking finger to slow it down.
It was -55C here last January, I did a video about it. I didn't have an outdoor gig though. LOL

still a worthwhile video. The little tidbits of experience with diff companies / part types is great.
At Tubes and More the 50uF/50uF is $11.66 as opposed to $10.95. That’s only a saving of $0.71c. That’s a 6.5% discount.
The saving on the MOD 70uF @ 350V caps is $0.66c from CE Distribution. This is a 25% discount which is great.

CE and Mouser I’ve used for years. I’ve used Digikey, etc. too and also some Antique radio parts, and also sometimes to companies that cater to Hi Fi Tube amps.
Excellent as always. Great info. Spent many hours searching for the right parts.
PS, you may have to throw out the clothes you wore on that day of weeding. Resinous saps and oils are notoriously difficult to wash out of clothing, and although I don't know if sumac and poison oak are as non biodegradable as poison ivy, scientic tests showed that the urishiol resin which causes poison ivy rash can withstand being buried in the ground for 6 months followed by 6 months on a hot sunny rooftop, and still maintain sufficient strength to give a rash to anyone who handles the clothing.

I absolutely love this video. And you're right about Mousers phone mobile website and their app. Both are just a nightmare.
Also folks remember to look at quantity pricing especially with resistors. For the 100K resistors I believe it was those, 10 is actually cheaper than four. If I'm wrong by all means correctly. But I have found with resistors specifically bold pricing can get very very cheap especially if you find yourself doing or needing a lot of the same value

A huge thank you for this one. Sourcing components has changed quite a bit since the days of the Electronics Retail shops, when I got my start. We had Allied, Olson, Radio Shack plus numerous single operations run by dedicated electronics guys with pocket protectors, that simply loved it. Each shop was different but each had the same aroma when you walked in. I do miss that. Anyway, this was in my opinion one of your better ones. Keep up the good work. Thanks!!

Helping the Algorithm! I wouldn't expect you to have a fully stocked shop but the common values you go through often could get a better bulk price, no? I've experienced needing 6 of something, getting a better deal for 10 but then needing 6 more the next time! I imagine you go through the parts more often than the average person though.

My favorite thing I learned from this video is that the voltage rating of a resistor represents the limit of volts dropped across it, not the voltage it might encounter in a circuit. Which makes total sense in retrospect. I was so disappointed a couple years ago when I bought a whole bunch of 3W Vishays only to find the rating was “only” 300 V. I thought that would be unsafe in an amp with 410 V coming off the rectifier, but they should be fine since nowhere in the circuit has 300 V dropping across it.

Lyle probably googled this already, but in addition to cortisone cream or calamine lotion, bathing with colloidal oatmeal, or baking soda, are recommended by dermatologists. An oral antihistamine can help, but they caution not to use antihistamine lotions directly on the skin as it may make the rash worse.

@@edwardebel1847 , Right now, the mosquitoes in my neck of New England are fairly bad in some areas, but the deer flies are worse ---- painful bites, and they mostly aim for your face, especially the eyes and hair, which is extremely annoying. A baseball cap just about saturated in bug spray is somewhat, but not completely, helpful. Not too many gnats this spring, despite all the rain we had, and I've seen very few ticks. There have been some years where you walk a few hundred feet on a trail and there's a dozen ticks on the each dog and a dozen ticks on me!😖
@@edwardebel1847 , I had a poison sumac rash as a kid but I've never had a poison ivy rash despite being exposed to it numerous times. I am one of those rare people that is so far apparently immune to it. If only I wasn't one of those people who attracts mosquitoes when no one else does.......

I live in Southern RI and we have deer flies here also . . . they circle you and then you don't see them anymore until you feel the bite on your face, etc. Got a lot of woods here in the semi-country and they are nasty. Got Weetamoo trail behind me which I avoid in the summer due to ticks and deer flies . . . I liked this video as I deal with Mouser a lot . . .

I have never bought a kit to build an amp. I hand pick the components so I get what I want. It takes a lot of time to round up parts for repairs or builds.

Thanks, Lyle. It is to be appreciated that this is a necessary part of any repair, build or even estimating a repair or project cost. When one is hobbying the time spent is part of the 'fun' but doing as a business factors in to the skill required to do a good job.

Thank you, Lyle. As a humble musician with no formal electronic training, I'm very limited and only do what I know how to. The online parts catalogs are like navigating the Bermuda triangle when it's pissed. This helped me understand some of it. Not boring to me.

Nice, informative video for your viewing audience. I use the same vendors, and have for years. I'm not as savvy with the search parameters as you are, but hey, I learned something! Never too old for that. I also tend to add on quantity. I sucks when you got nothing in your stock to finish a repair. Enjoy your channel.

That’s a good starting point amp. Watch out for loose power switches and bad indicator connections. The board itself is quite good.

You will need to get your AZ resale license and submit an AZ5000 form to them.
Oh, that's how you do it. But, really, I did watch it all the way through. Two reasons for me are that, 1; I restored my pre CBS amps recently (your videos helped a lot) but I had used the Sprague Atoms for cathode bypass and I keep hearing that they're not what they used to be so I wanted to see what you're using now, and 2; navigating Mouser is confusing and you've helped there too. I actually took notes. I'm only doing this to restore the circuits of my 5 old Fender amps that I've used since the mid 70's (I'm now 72), not to become an amp tech. They're finished but I don't mind going back in and upgrading a few caps and or resistors If it turns out that I chose an inferior part. I used F&T for the filter and bias caps, but they didn't have the 25uf 50 V's for cathode bypass. I have replaced the vibrato cathode bypass caps with the one you recommend since finishing the restoration. I was hoping you'd do a video like this one. Get better soon, heads up, as we get older it's always something, never nothing. Thanks. 😸✌

This was literally something I asked awhile back lol. I said I always just buy what's cheapest and fits the bill but I'd like to start being more deserning over parts. And I honestly never thought to price match between sites. I always place my mouser orders on the phone but only once I've put everything in my cart so I know the product codes or I send a copy and of my cart to the rep. I pick up from their will call a lot cause I live so close to them and there isn't a will call option on the site checkout which is why I call.
I built a couple of pedals and this step of ordering was by far the most stressful part. I almost always had to re-order because I selected something wrong. Always my fault.

I've been using Mouser for years and while the filtering options are powerful, my gripe with it is that I can't always select the parameters I care most about without selecting some other categories first which sometimes requires two open tabs to compare prices for what I'm looking for.

Hi Lyle, Why just order 4 of the plate resistors for $1,96 when you could have 10 for $2.08? Then you have spares on hand for the next job, paid less per unit, and probably save on shipping.. Owner price quoting?
I actually do that all the time but didn’t want to make the video longer/potentially more confusing. But yes, the real order will have the multiples to take advantage of the pricing tiers.
And that us the story of all repair people... No one even thinks about the time we lose just trying to find the right parts to do a simple repair.

As you may know the main reason for the price difference between the CPF and PR03 is the tolerance. The CPF’s being 1% and the PR03’s 5%. I’m sure most of your viewers would like to know when to use one type over the other.
CPF is also flame proof. I’ve used them with excellent results as plate resistors but usually only order them to use in series with a zener to bring down screen voltages when needed or for output plates in an old SVT.

Justradios is wholesale for everyone and good quility good prices, but i do like those vishey caps, i use them in alot of my builds, never had a failure. Ive been using nichicon metal films. There cheap and top qaulity.

But on the plus side, I am about to build a Deluxe Revb and will possibly upgrade the caps that come with the kit…depending of course on what comes with the kit…later today. So, calamine lotion/rubbing alcohol/Benedril cream or whatever works and on with the video. Get well soon, Bro.

Axial vs radial is like 10 to 12 time more expensive . For the same value that is eye opening .
Yup. And radials tend to be much better caps these days.
For some people, eating cashews helps clear the reaction faster and lower future sensitivity. My nephew does this for Poison Oak/Poison Ivy.
But I loathe cashews.

I know the Marshall Studio series has problems but here in the UK they can be had for about £824 ($1042) for the combo versions, what other amps for domestic use that lean towards a more Marshall-ish sound are out there at this sort of price point (or cheaper) that might be better?

Here's a capacitor preference question. I recently had to replace the two big blue ARS filter caps in my (older) Friedman Dirty Shirley Mini (replaced them with F&T's), and while I was in there I replaced the two crummy 500pf Silver Mica (the little black ones marked SM) treble caps with some Silver Mica CDMs (the slightly larger brown Cornell Dubiliers). I think I asked Dave about these treble caps after I replaced them, and iirc he said he now uses the Vishay Ceramic 562R's. I actually also have a few of these, in both 500pf and 560pf. Is this even worth addressing, or rather, in your opinion, what, if any, discernable difference in sound would there be between the CDM Silver Micas and the Vishay 562R Ceramics?
Also, thanks for addressing that about you inadvertently selecting the 400v caps as opposed to the 630v ones. I wondered about that the first time I watched. And thanks for showing us those yellow MKT1813 Vishays, I had always gone with the yellow Mallory 150 caps in the past. Thank you so much for ALL your videos, and for sharing your knowledge with us all!
There *can* be slight differences in sound between SM and ceramic in *some* parts of *some* circuits.
Whether that is important or which is “better” is completely subjective. Odds are you’re good with the CDM SMs.

Thank you for this. Sourcing materials has been the hardest part of learning how to fix amps by a mile.
I’m curious how you handle the time it takes to order parts. It can add up quick. Do you keep track of that time and divide it out by how many customers it was for? I don’t really expect an answer here. I’ve typically ordered parts for guitar repair and not tracked the time but these days, it matter more because I have less time. Nothing boring about this video. 👍
I bill the time spent, including parts orders. Doing it on video like this obviously is much slower than how I really do it, and these particular clients won’t get charged “video time.”
But this stuff takes time. Sometimes finding the right schematic takes time. Sometimes I have to measure and draw out the schematic to really troubleshoot. That takes time.
And time is, oh, what’s the word?

I'm surprised you didn't opt for the discount on 10 vishay caps and film and foil caps like WMFs. I think the mojo dijons are good replicas of the mustard caps both being film and foil instead of metalized poly. I find that it's hard to beat CE unless you're buying 100 pieces from mouser
WMFs and Dijons are huge and don’t sound different than the 1813s. As to bulk pricing, see the next video.

Is there any consideration for the temperature coefficient of resistors? I'm assuming in vintage amps from the 50's and 60's it was probably not too good compared to modern parts. I do know that most amps sound better after they're hot (my current amp tends to sound best after it's been on for around 45 minutes or more but maybe that's the iron?). Thanks.
It’s more important in power supplies than in the audio circuit. I decided not to go into it in this video. Every resistor here exceeds requirements for a guitar amp.
