      @@BeardedBored excellent news! Can you reduce the abv down at all or does it just come out at 90% all the time? Thinking of perhaps running it, macerating soke botanicals and doing a gin run! But 90% will strip all flavours etc

    I just received my "Water Maker", hypothetically, of course. Kudos to Lafras. I just tested this unit on a batch of "Ginger Beer" wash. Just plugged the unit in, connected the unit via WiFi, plugged in the wash to the supplied piping and ran the unit. Never had any still run that level of ABV. Insane. I did a second run on a similar "Ginger Beer" wash, adjusting a few of the parameters for power, heads,hearts, fusils, etc. Again Insane result. Welcome to taste. Next batch is a GIN. Most impressive. @ Lafras thanks for your continued communication when I placed my order, I understand the issues you experienced developing this unit & supply.

      I would like to see how it does with malted barley runs. The first reason is it’s the easiest all grain mash to separate from the grain. Second and most important is I heard barley washes foam quite a lot in continuous stills. Rye would also be an interesting wash to test but it’s not very pragmatic to filter.

    • @BeardedBored
      @BeardedBored  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As long as it's strained, the mini can handle it. He's got a video on his channel where he does a dirty run with so much yeast in the wash that it looks like milk. He figures the reason why it still makes clean neutral is that the wash stays in the system for a pretty short period of time before being pumped out for the next dose. So, if you have a barley or corn wash you want to turn into vodka it should do fine. He's got a bigger version that does whiskey, rum or brandy, but I haven't tested it yet.

    I think the vodkamaker would really benefit from something to limit the airflow across the mouth of the jar. If the ABV was 90% after sitting there for 8 hours it might've been 99% if the jar had a lid with a tiny hole drilled in the top. Oh, I forgot to ask, is there any reason that the mini-still can't make rum?
    Speaking of which, it is quite popular to make vanilla extract (and paste) with Captain Morgan's 70°P Coconut Rum (at least in some circles). While the extracts (and paste) do not have much if any coconut flavor, they are noticeably sweeter but not overwhelmingly so. YMMV. I have a few batches using that and some using Siesta Key 70°P real Toasted Coconut Rum. SK TCR is very smooth all on its own and quite tasty. I believe it will make a great vanilla bean extract (it does makes an excellent vanilla bean paste!). It is said amongst those with experience that 70°P (35% ABV) makes for a better flavored vanilla extract. Again though, YMMV.
    You asked - what to do with the vanilla extract. I started down the rabbit hole of vanilla because I also started making my own yogurt, frozen yogurt, frozen custards and ice cream. I also added vanilla paste to my homemade bread (I use a bread machine). Since it is just me, I haven't finished that loaf yet (which is quite yummy but this one turned out a bit dense and a bit dry) but once I do finish eating it I'll try another loaf with freshly milled whole grain. Likely will be a one of the honey beer bread recipes. My oven doesn't work so I can't speak to any other baked goods, but adding vanilla to waffles or pancakes sounds like a great idea. And finally, vanilla is also used in some savory dishes as well. I haven't got there yet because the extracts aren't ready and paste is made with a lot of sugar.
    It's rather late but trust me, I will be back. I am making a freezer distilled rum and the "wine" is just about finished fermenting. But this video showed a few extra tips that I would like to have known before I got started. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    I love this little invention. I am guessing it doesnt have a volume capacity? Like the volume is dependent on the external containers right? So if I was say had (2) 5gal bottles of neutral spirits (1 bottle with hose leading into the other and have it perched slightly higher to help the flow it should pull through all 10gal. I imagine yes , no?

    • @BeardedBored
      @BeardedBored  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can run a 50 gallon barrel of wash through it and it'll keep going. But it's only designed to run fermented wash to make neutral, not refine neutral spirits. Something about the water content of spirits not keeping the insides cool enough, so the input has to be 12% abv or lower. He goes into better detail on his website and explains it way better:-)

    I'm only 10 min. in, but I saw your video about ultrasonic aging alcohol with a chunk of charred wood. I'm wondering why you didn't do that to the vanilla instead of overheating the vanilla and killing off some of the more delicate flavor components of the vanilla bean.
    My recent experience has been favorable but I'm new to doing vanilla extracts (and paste) and had never really been a fan of vanilla. But I thought, if I make my own, perhaps I'll like it. Which I do, but it has to be quite a large amount, so currently vanilla paste is my favorite (a modified Alex Green recipe). But that is somewhat off topic here. My ultrasonic vanilla bean extract batches are cloudier than my non-ultrasonic batches. But I still want them to age for a little bit too, therefore I don't have final results.
    And finally, I have discovered that there are (allegedly) far more effective and efficient ultrasonic wands. Perhaps a bit more expensive than the bath cleaner type, unless you buy the Sharper Image wand but perhaps worth considering. IDK.

    instead of running wash be interesting to run low wines to see what the final adv would be

    • @myvodkamaker
      @myvodkamaker ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can run low wines diluted back to 12% ABV...it uses the incoming water% of the wash as coolant, so if you were to feed say 35% low wine there would not be enough water to cool the ethanol vapors. This makes it very energy efficient, being able to run on a tiny fan...but the behavior is quite different from a normal batch still. it effectively does the stripping - low wines- and spirit run using the same energy in one go.

      I just used the default settings. The only trouble I had was the run I did after the video puked out the top vent port. I asked Lafras about it and he said to plug a hose into the vent to let the puke run out into the sink. Worked great.
      He has since modified the design on the newer units. He's is finally catching up on orders, so I'd email him to see if he can give you some advice on anything else. I've got a new Plus version to test, so I'll try to compile a list of any tweaks he recommends for older models and cover it in the next video.
