My garage is my fish/reptile room. So every Saturday morning I start my WCs using a Python on my larger tanks. While those are doing their thing, I clean my smaller tanks with a syphon and bucket and clean and feed my reptiles. The whole thing takes about 2hrs and that’s with doing 90% WCs. I’ve been on this routine for years.
@@CichlidCharmer I wish i could have tanks inside but my wife doesn’t want tanks in the house lol but I think with fans you’d probably be ok. I lived in Phoenix for 10 years with fish in the garage and I just ran small fans on each tank, the hardest part was topping off every day
Miss Stella Hi sweetie, these are some great ideas on keeping our tanks clean and fish happy, me well seems every day I'm doing some maintenance on one or more tanks and especially the 3 fry hotels I'm their maid every time I walk by them "oh housekeeping I need clean towels" oh well I enjoy my fish. Thank you for all your tips and info, Polly.
Hey there! found your channel a few days ago and I'm really liking it. I like your super different approach (humorous and acid), and yes, African Cichlids are a*holes but I can't stop loving them. Congrats on the channel, and best of luck!
I got mine down to a day of the week, this being said things change so sometimes a day early or later happens but it’s not out of neglect. Just either fed too much that week or I don’t have a bottle of prime around. And I’m an EVERYDAY changer but I have 12 tanks and run a business helping with peoples pets and aquariums. Needless to say I like doing it 😊 ❤
That is so cool to know about you. I always see your comments, but never got a glimpse into what you do. That’s a lot of tanks - I can tell you love it. And you get to do other people’s tanks too? What a dream 🥰. Have I already invited you to the Cichlid Charmer Fish Keepers group on fb? I’d love to see those tanks of yours.
Thank you very much for these tips... I tend to do my filters when the flow slows down. Water changes I do when I'm ALONE! At home... I don't want to make mistakes with my wife constantly bothering me😂. I do my water changes on a Monday when I have half day off from work❤❤❤
CC, Appreciate the video on your tank maintenance. I do my tank maintenance on Sundays. Every other Sunday I do water change in my 100 gal CA/SA tank I change about 60 to 75 percent of the water when I do the water change. The opposite Sunday when I don’t do a water change I top up the tanks and clean out the filtration. I don’t like to do to much at one time for the beneficial bacteria.
@@CichlidCharmer oh yeah nice you will love the CA / SA tank once you get it setup. They are like little water puppies. Are we going to see a review of what you got soon? :) ;)
@@CichlidCharmer good morning my friend! The days aren't bad, it's when my 3 year son wakes up while I'm in the middle of it lmao. Gotta get him a bottle real quick lol
Exactly. That’s why I modified it to set a timer for every five minutes and must be in the same room. BUT I also mentioned you need to be extremely careful with this and the limits of your attention. The reason I killed most my fish was because I was distracted WHILE making the video of the water change. I know my limitations now and have a list while I do big water changes, and I am VERY mindful of that list if recording while doing maintenance that could result in catastrophe. I also watched football keeping an eye on the water level, but failed to notice the behavior of my fish. If you have a good attention span and can set a timer for frequent intervals successfully, I don’t see why you couldn’t do something else in the same room while doing maintenance. Dishes, clean the floors, etc.
hi great video question ok my fx6 canister filter hole kinda have a Small hold in. I was thinking about buying a recoregular. Rubber holes for it So in the future I wouldn't have that problem anytime soon. What's your opinion about that buying a clear holes for the fx6 just make sure it's the right size lol
@CichlidCharmer oh sorry for that / ok I was trying ask what do you think about me Going to the hardware store buy a regular rubber holes my fluval fx6 canister One of the hoes has a hole in it And I was thinking about replacing it with a regular rubber clear hose. I wanted to get your opinion about it
I usually do mine on Sunday. Usually I Start draining it in the morning. I need to order a pump. I’m still doing it with a syphon and boy does take sometime to drain
Sunday is actually my work Friday. That pump I use is wonderful. It does a fairly quick job with a 5/8” hose, but it’s a beast with a 1” hose. Thanks for commenting, Ian!
@@CichlidCharmer oh I get that ! My work Friday changes every week ! There’s a lot of give and take with my schedule. I work 4 on 4 off as a crane and heavy equipment operator so every week my starting day goes up one day. I start tomorrow on Wednesday so I’ll get out Sunday. Then boom the following week I start on Thursday and get on Monday. It’s nice because I get to be around the kids alot. There asleep when I’m at work . But even if I’m on shift I try and do it as soon as I get off in the morning . It’s going to be a lot better when I just buy the dang pump 😂. I don’t why I haven’t yet I just like pain I guess 😂.
@@CichlidCharmer I’m going to be adding a bathroom in the basement probably this year and I told my wife “. I think I’m going to add in either bigger hot water tank or a second identical one “. She probably thinks I’m a nut job .
That is a sweet schedule. The reason I don’t switch to something new even though I know it’s better is usually because I feel a little anxiety about needing extra time at first to get going. It’s so comfortable to just keep on in my routine, even though I know I should change. I’ll do that later… 😂
My schedule is pretty easy: I have two tanks, one is for saturdays (or sundays) and the other, the little one, is for sundays or mondays (it depends when i take the water for the water changes because i let it rest for 24h in a bucket), for me It won't be possible to watch a football match (the proper one ⚽🤣) and doing maintenance because i am too much involved emotionally in the match 🤣
I love it. I bet you never forget to do your maintenance either by the sounds of it. And good idea on the football - even if it’s not the “right” type of football 😎😂
@@CichlidCharmer nono i never forget, i tried a no water change month in both (since i have pothos rooted in the water in the little one and water lettuce) but it didn't work well, i really wish i could do like MD Fish Tanks that sets up an aquarium and never changes water
Hi today i done my maintenance and i saw that my fluval canister sponge filter became light pink in colour. Before it was white. Maybe you can tell me why? Many thanks Red
Fish and tank maintenance is very important so if you’re not able to get it done, you pretty much need another hobby. Not the end of the world if you miss here and there but must be done. A tank or tanks that are kept in amazing condition and great working order have more leeway than one that’s borderline of disaster. I pick days that I dedicate to tank maintenance and also follow a schedule that I write in a book that I can look up and see what I have done or needs doing just like a service book. To me my fish are family not just water pets .

Is your fish food pink?
No
Hmmm. I’m not really sure then. I’d just clean them in tank water if everyone is doing fine. You might be able to find something on Reddit too.
What type of sand do you have in your tanks?
The Africans have aragonite. The Americans Torpedo Beach.
