I enjoyed this video. I had some dead space in my 40 gallon breeder and I already had an air stone in there so I decided on a set of cheap sunsun wave maker things and they move the water pretty good. Now my only issue is to figure out what light setting to use on my fluval 3.0 so the filament algae stops growing 😆 I've been reading blogs and doing research on co2 in correlation with ph and phosphates and blue light and red light and all kinds of stuff it gets a little complex. I just turn my settings down a bit each each and excel helps inhibit growth some.
Way to go guys! I have saying for years that Tropica Plants are unbeatable in quality! Glad that you chose to sell the best instead of earning the most! They are far from the cheapest. Even when you buy like Vallesneria from them. They almost look like plastic. Best plants in the world right now.
Just my opinion but rather than putting an air stone in a tank to get rid of dead zones I'd make it a small sponge filter. That way you always have a seasoned filter to use anywhere you may need it
Underrated comment tbh. I have a sponge filter on my 5 gallon that I use for seasoning. I just have 2 little ballon Molly, they will be fine if I take it out. It’s always good to out extras in established tank cuz it’s free bacteria
Very good point. I've got a 55 with a HOB on one end and I've been considering a little sponge at one end to help with the stagnation and as a backup of my HOB loses prime.
I have a total of seven tanks, and other than the tiniest (2.5 gallon), only one is currently without a supplemental sponge filter. Now that I think of it, I should probably add one to it, as well. Not only do you always have one on hand for setting up a new tank quickly, it's extra protection if the main filter fails and you can't replace it immediately.
Words cannot describe how jealous I am of your beyond amazing fish room. I don’t think I’d be able to foot the power bill but majestic and paradise don’t even do your fish haven justice
I put my hang-on-the-back filter on the sides of my tanks rather then the back whenever I can. I get a circular current that flows across the surface and back toward the filter along the bottom of the tank. I have a custom lid that I made out of plastic greenhouse panel to fit around where the filter goes. The filter is also more easily reached for cleaning than if it were at the back.
I was wondering about that. I have a 75 gallon tank with 2 Aqua clear 110's. would love to put them on the sides (facing eachother!) and being able to push my tank and stand against the wall again. Just wasnt sure if the water flow pattern would be OK.
7:57 you are the reason I got this filter. Thank you so much! I’m working on a new tank for it right now with a driftwood stump I found on the river. 😭 it’s glorious 🎉
👍😎 Some good points John. Years ago while cleaning my canister, I remember putting some kind of med in, so I just put it inside the canister, it was blue. Pretty cool cuz you could actually see the flow. Should try that next time you do a review on a filter.
I like keeping the water as still as possible with Bettas. Just a sponge filter with an airhose valve to set the bubbles low. Females less a problem, they're stronger swimmers, but mind tend to get anxious with too much surface turbulence. I never thought of a Betta sorority until I saw this channel, or even bought female bettas. I started to and I've really enjoyed it.
Is it possible to make a video about using house plants in the aquarium? I really would like to know which ones to use and how to do it the right way. Thanks Love your videos by the way 😊
Whether it’s canisters or hang-on-back filters, I’ve always put one on each side. I also have a circulation pump and some air stones in my tank as well. In the future, I might consider using hang-on-back filters on the end of the tank (the side wall) to send water across the length of the tank
I've wanted to do that before but standard tank lids don't fit like that so I'd have to just cut some glass from HD/Lowe's or something but now I'm onto canister filters and sumps lol
In the 70's I had a hand-made tank made out of plywood and 1/4" plate glass in the front. I did all kinds of wrong in those days. I had a hang-on-back that was mounted on the side. I had a piston air pump that looked like a science experiment. I think it fed air into the tank. I had gold and green severums in the tank along with Tanganyika cichlids (but those Lake cichlids didn't care and bred in the rocks anyway). I also fed feeder fish as well. But looking back I'm surprised how successful my tank was back then.
In my tanks with hob filters, I always place the filter on one side and a sponge filter on the opposite side. It's good to have a sponge as a back up for beneficial bacteria
Great video. If I’m not certain of the water flow (HOB/Shark Pro) I observe the plant movement and how my flake food circulates on the surface and as it sinks.
I have a topfin 55gal tank from pet smart. And the original OTB filter but I took out the cartridge filter and added foam to the basket and over the intake and a AQQA sponge filter siting in the middle. I've been dealing with a green even after 2 weeks and 3 75% water changes...
I only have a 20L and have an HOB on one end and a sponge filter with a USB nano pump on the other. I love the HOB for filtration, but just in case of a power outage, the sponge filter will be there without having to set it up - just have to plug it into a charger.
I have a fifty five gallon I have a marine land 350 plus another Aqua-tech 20-40 gallons plus a up to 60 gallon sponge filter. And I use the air stone in the sponge filter. So both filters on each side of the tank. And the sponge filter right in the middle of the tank
I like to run multiple filters but basically for different purposes. like one is all mechanical. one is coarse with biomedia. as an example. makes filter cleaning super easy!
Great video..thanks John for the knowledge sharing. You certainly were a virtual mentor as I got into the hobby and keeping cichlids. A follow-up good topic to this video could be heater placement, in relation to where you have your filter.
I usually put heaters by the intake to heat the water before entering the canister. The Tidal HOBs have a clip to attach a heater to it and it’s parallel to the intake.
My heater is almost directly below the output of my HOB filter, and not far from the intake either. With good flow, there may be minor fluctuations of a degree or two, but not enough to cause problems. In the wild, many of these fish, or their ancestors, dealt with temperature fluctuations not only from weather and seasonal changes, but also from depth and shifting sunlight/shade patterns.
@Apistogator thanks for the feedback. I find that I get better temperature uniformity when my heater is placed horizontally versus vertically. I also have it placed below my HOB intake, with the reasoning that heat rises...
Great video as always! Out of curiosity, I was looking at past videos... Does anyone know what brand substrate he used for his yellow lab tank? Looking to get something similar.
Quick question:I have a 125 gallon and I have two of the Sicce 900’s (which I bought based on your review and I love them). Currently one in the right hand corner to the back and one in the left hand corner toward the front, creating that whirlpool you mention. However I am wondering if putting both on one side could work? I want to get some more plants in that left hand corner is the reason . It’s heavily planted. Can you please let me know your thoughts? I appreciate you!
Felt like I had to chime in on over filtering, I’m running two FX6’s on a 125 gal, and a Fluval 307 and a Sunsun 704b on a 55 gal. There’s no dead spots and the water in each tank is always crystal clear.
1 sponge and 2 bio media is generally the best. But in rare cases where you suspect there is harmful substance introduced such as soap or something, remove one bio media and swap in carbon for a day.
My go to is double stacked sponge filters in each side. Anything over a 60 I also either run HOBs or canisters along side the sponge filters. So far so good 🙂 (I love wavemakers for movement too!)
Hello John Are you guys coming to The Aquatic Expo in Charlotte this June? I'd love to meet you in person, I'm planning on going, this will be my first time at an aquatic event. 💪🏻🙏☺️
Hey thanks for your videos ! I have 145 gallon ( 540l 150*60*60cm ) malawi aulonocara aquarium Filtration FX6+FX4 Which wave maker should i buy and how strong to make even better flow in aquarium ? Thank you
I have penguins on 3 of my tanks, in love with them!! Would love to be able to buy replacement filters cartridges off of you all instead of typical big name stores!
I place an assortment of lava and slate rock around the Shark (midway on the side of the 80 (yes 80, from 1980) gal. which has other filtration also, but the rock helps to hide the filter and offers a level of habitat for the corys and maybe a level of bacterial filtreation . . .
Im using 2 juwel bioflow xl one in each corner in my 720 liter Malawitank. If one fail the second one can keep my tank in order untill i can fix the other filter. Also like the idea that i got flow from both directions. Just a friendly tip.
SO I have seen some people put the their HOB Filters actually on the end (side) of their tanks directing the water along the length of the tank is their any advantage or disadvantage to this (flow wise) ? Loving the videos since I found your channel and I am trying to watch as many of your older videos as I can! I have a Tidal 55 coming in today or tomorrow for my 36 gallon Bow front community tank to replace the Top Fin 40 Filter that came with it , because it just doesn't cut it honestly... and internal pump on the filter.. yes please!!!
As always, great video! Based on our tap water, soft and neutral ph, I’m thinking about a 90G discus tank. I felt an FX4 would be plenty until I saw Lisa’s filtration! 😲😲
I was just thinking about how I placed my two Aquaclear 70s in my 60 gallon, which I tried to center (more or less) on either side of the central support bar. The water seems to flow really well, but I wonder if it would have been better to place them closer to the sides of the tank. My fish, including long fin zebra danios, fancy guppies, silver hatchets, and glass catfish, all seem to be doing fine with the current (no pun intended) setup.
I just got this massive RPG the day it came out. Then I got the new VR the day after it came out. The next day, I started watching your channel. Now I can't sit still because I have to paint my fish room, and I can't concentrate on anything without imagining it as hardscape.
Team kgtropicals awesome video guys John did a great job keep up the great work love all the content didn't really get to see the saltwater by the way how is gizmo that little terror!! See you on the next one 🌿
Ok the reason for separation of inlet and outlet is to decrease recirculation of filtered water vs unfiltered water. Although I think the benefit is minimal at best. What I base this on is vascular catheters used for hemodialysis { I know totally different} what was found is that the blood would need to be drawn out of the proximal port {upstream to blood flow} and returned via the distal port {Downstream}, blood was 400ml/min, body volume 7l +/- and you could get 5% +/- greater efficiency. Apples to oranges? yes, but still getting them further apart can't hurt.
Great information. I had a canister filter on my 55 gallon tank. Now looking forward to getting a sump on my custom built tank. Give more information about sumps - thanks.
On my 55g I run 2 seachem tidal 110s. About the intake filter pipes. .is it better to have the pipes towards the ends, or as close to middle or both middle?
I upgraded to a 55gal fish tank that has two opening on top for filter system(s) *on right or left sides The aquarium is a starter set which came with a Top Fin Silenstream power adjustable filter (for 40-75 gal). I have it adjust at lower setting so to keep quiet) I want to put a 2nd (same model) filter system on the opposite side, so having two filter systems. Too increase water flow and surface movement. (I have 12 small fish) Is this too much?
I'm really old school. I've got undergravel filters hooked up to canister filters to move the water (no air stones - too noisy for me). No one talks much about undergravel filters. Would love to hear your experiences.
my 75gal i made a wall made of legos in the aquarium, the input of my hand on is between the wall and the back glass of the aquarium, my output is going over the lego wall. my filter is to the right side, to the left side behind the wall i have stones to circulate that water to the right side
It would b the best thing if the filter companies give u an option to have an hob with the inputs and outputs on the left or right or just make both and let people choose
My 30 gallon tank has to sit right against the wall or it would block the tv. So I put my HOB on the side (meaning the end of the tank, the SHORT side). I also have a Shark in the opposite corner, so it works really well. To be fair, it's a Tidal 55, so it's more than it should need anyway.
One good thing about the emporers are that that are very durable and long lasting. But something I don’t like is that I notice that the bigger the emporer the louder they get. Smaller the much quieter
It doesn't matter at all where you place the filter. I've kept aquariums for 52 years and never worried about it for a minute. Under gravel, HOB, sponge, canister. I do prefer two smaller filters over one large one in case one of them fails.
Thank you for the info. Also, I don’t think Marineland is to the quality of your filters on your site. I’ve used several penguin filters of theirs, and ultimately upgraded them to Tidal or Fluval. Not much media can be held in the marineland, and the bio wheel seems to be just a gimmick.
The best place to put a filter is in the trash. I primarily run filterless planted tanks. 🤣 But good discussion anyway and I agree that as long as you're getting adequate circulation in the tank then there's no need to stress about filter placement.
@@MongoHongos Much like this hobby, my comment really shouldn't be taken too seriously. If you plan to keep massive fish in an empty glass box then heavy filtration is going to be necessary (unless you are planning to do massive daily water changes).
The advantage of heavily planted, lightly stocked tanks, yes! I have Nicrew internal filters on all of my tanks now (all rated lower than the tank sizes). Just replaced the final 2 HOBs, in fact. I'm only running them for a few hours at night when lights are off for water circulation and surface agitation. It's not really necessary, but it agitates the surface and makes sure nutrients are well distributed for plants, as well as keeping any floating particles cleared from the water (I know they aren't harmful, I just don't like the way they look). I love the fact I'm not reliant on mechanical "life support" for my tanks, though. I rely on bacteria on all the hardscape, plants, glass, and substrate to do my filtering. I don't plan to ever have a tank again that's stocked in a way that requires more than minimal filtration (due to lack of plants or large fish or overstocking). I can certainly see why some folks need a lot of filtration, though, especially those with BIG fish who can't have plants.
Sponge Filters are pointless imo since they stay inside the tank and collect all the gunk while taking up space. It’s like having a dirty exposed air filter on your kitchen table while eating. HOB Filters are only good for short width tanks (Under 20gl) unless the filter width matches it since the intake and outflow are parallel to one another in one lane but at least it transports debris away from the main water column. Canister Filters are the best in general especially for larger tanks since they fully circulate the water from one end to the other while transporting all the debris further away from the water column.
I miss my old behind the tank filter it was about 20 inches long. Had charcoal bags i put in it and filter floss top of that . Then used siphon tubes to keep filter full of water which provided a safe haven for babies to grow till large enough to put back into main tank
You forgot to mention one detail about canister filters, your words "why is it something you have to do i don't think you have to" wrong some times you have no choice i have a fluval roma 125 and there's specific cut outs for wires and pipes for a external filter, and the same for my old juwle 450, plus placement of the tank might make it impossible to have both intake and outlet on the same end
Why isn't putting a HOB filter on the end of an aquarium talked about much? I think it makes perfect sense to hang one on one end and flow the filtered water as far away from the intake as possible
Great video! I always have a HOB on one side and my sponge filter on the opposite side. 😊 I'm like Lisa, I feel better the more filtration I have. 🤷♀️🧡🫶
As someone with a 29g angelfish tank, my sicce is litteraly on the exs t same side in thebexact same spot, and i have a ponge filter on the opposite corner and my tank is perfect (other than a small deadzone under the sicce 500 ) but my corys eat the food that faalls there so ive got my tnk in sync i believe

Jealous of that amazing background! I can not hear what you are saying, talk about dreamtanks, AND YOU HAVE 4 IN THE SAME ROOM YOU LUCKY FISHLOVER! 🍾
Their plants are way worth it!!! I've bought a few and they were both super healthy and snail free!!🧡
It’s always good to out extras in established tank cuz it’s free bacteria
smart! agreed
And if you don't have a bunch of tanks that could be for a quarantine tank
Very good point. I've got a 55 with a HOB on one end and I've been considering a little sponge at one end to help with the stagnation and as a backup of my HOB loses prime.
I have a total of seven tanks, and other than the tiniest (2.5 gallon), only one is currently without a supplemental sponge filter. Now that I think of it, I should probably add one to it, as well. Not only do you always have one on hand for setting up a new tank quickly, it's extra protection if the main filter fails and you can't replace it immediately.

I wish they made lids specifically for that setup.
I was wondering about that. I have a 75 gallon tank with 2 Aqua clear 110's. would love to put them on the sides (facing eachother!) and being able to push my tank and stand against the wall again. Just wasnt sure if the water flow pattern would be OK.

Fish room, is looking awesome! Great information on filtration
Is it possible to make a video about using house plants in the aquarium? I really would like to know which ones to use and how to do it the right way.
Thanks
Love your videos by the way 😊
Go to the smallscape she has everything you'll want to know. Also H20 plants channel too
Take a look at Plant Life Project. It's all about houseplants in the aquarium
Lovely video. I’ve always wondered if there are better placements for filters or if it even matters. Thank you for reading my mind! ❤
Technically the sponges count as media in them too. But I see what you mean as just in filter media
Whether it’s canisters or hang-on-back filters, I’ve always put one on each side. I also have a circulation pump and some air stones in my tank as well. In the future, I might consider using hang-on-back filters on the end of the tank (the side wall) to send water across the length of the tank

Love the candy above your 75g 👊🏿 stay up and safe
First thing I have to say going through the video... the beard is a great addition!
I have a fifty five gallon I have a marine land 350 plus another Aqua-tech 20-40 gallons plus a up to 60 gallon sponge filter. And I use the air stone in the sponge filter. So both filters on each side of the tank. And the sponge filter right in the middle of the tank

I believe he mentions it in one of the videos. If I remember correctly, it was the Caribsea cichlid mix.

I use hang on the backs as just water polishers as they are easy to replace the white wool media
Thank you! Good to know especially when we're constantly changing & upgrading tanks! 😂
I concur 😎 Thanks John 💕👍
Good advice thanks for sharing
Felt like I had to chime in on over filtering, I’m running two FX6’s on a 125 gal, and a Fluval 307 and a Sunsun 704b on a 55 gal. There’s no dead spots and the water in each tank is always crystal clear.

Yes

Ohh... "IN" the water. Well, now I feel silly. 😂
How the hell did you know? 😂 I had this question this morning. 😮

I usually place mine beside my heater, opposite side of my tank thermometer. But i use sponges an usually back left corner cuz im a lefty 🤣
I'm really old school. I've got undergravel filters hooked up to canister filters to move the water (no air stones - too noisy for me). No one talks much about undergravel filters. Would love to hear your experiences.
I've always absolutely loved my under gravel filters
I have a 60 gal breeder, is an fx2 overkill?
my 75gal i made a wall made of legos in the aquarium, the input of my hand on is between the wall and the back glass of the aquarium, my output is going over the lego wall. my filter is to the right side, to the left side behind the wall i have stones to circulate that water to the right side
That sounds cool!
Do you feed your bettas m & ms? When you are talking about the betta sorority there is a bag of them in the right corner. I love m & ms. Lol🤪
beard is looking great!
What kind of filter do you recommend for a 5 gallon tank with a betta in it?
Will the tidal 35 filter the bottom of the tank even though it doesn't have a long intake? I'm concerned that my filter wont filter good lol
I'm using a sponge and a tidal 35 because the tidal doesn't have a strong pull from the bottom of the tank.
There is one more consideration.. u want the filter near ur heater (or your heater near ur filter). Dissipates heat better
With Hang-on-the-Back filters, don't you buy two low-powered filters and put one each end?
One good thing about the emporers are that that are very durable and long lasting. But something I don’t like is that I notice that the bigger the emporer the louder they get. Smaller the much quieter
It doesn't matter at all where you place the filter. I've kept aquariums for 52 years and never worried about it for a minute. Under gravel, HOB, sponge, canister. I do prefer two smaller filters over one large one in case one of them fails.
I'm with Lisa...I prefer overkill filtration on my tanks.
Thank you for the info. Also, I don’t think Marineland is to the quality of your filters on your site. I’ve used several penguin filters of theirs, and ultimately upgraded them to Tidal or Fluval. Not much media can be held in the marineland, and the bio wheel seems to be just a gimmick.
my biowheels all stopped spinning, agreed
I think I set the record for the most overfiltered tank. I had a 407, 2 FX6's, a 110 HOB, a sponge, and a moving bed filter. 😅
So you made a wave maker inside your aquarium
I always wondered where the best spot for sponge filter is..
The best place to put a filter is in the trash. I primarily run filterless planted tanks. 🤣 But good discussion anyway and I agree that as long as you're getting adequate circulation in the tank then there's no need to stress about filter placement.
🙄
Fishies in middle 240 tank thought it was feeding time 😅😂
You forgot to mention one detail about canister filters, your words "why is it something you have to do i don't think you have to" wrong some times you have no choice i have a fluval roma 125 and there's specific cut outs for wires and pipes for a external filter, and the same for my old juwle 450, plus placement of the tank might make it impossible to have both intake and outlet on the same end
👍🏻👍🏻
I’ve missed your videos… I’ve been getting 0 notifications and your videos don’t get recommended to me by TH-cam anymore
Why on minatire you have hoover's brushes? New business?
Not over filtered, 2 canisters and 1 HOB would be better. FX4 doesn't hold much media. Love your channel!
Be aware that the Emperor 450 will not fit on Aqeon tanks of 75 gallons plus. The mounting area on the filter is too narrow.
What about the under gravel filter? How important is it to place that one correctly? I always seem to struggle with it. 🤔😳🤓🤣
Why isn't putting a HOB filter on the end of an aquarium talked about much? I think it makes perfect sense to hang one on one end and flow the filtered water as far away from the intake as possible
Commenting for the algorithm
Lisa's tank has one of those manly canister filters? I thought those were only for men who like to show off?😘
I was wondering do you guys have any kids?
They do I think they said they got 2
Too many gesticuletions .
Thank you
